On 29th March 1857, Mangal Pandey, the 29th year old sepoy of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI), Regiment of British East India Company, Barrackpore, Calcuttta   shot the British Officers for their bad treatment of the sepoys including  compelling them to use the beef/pig fat for greasing the gun catridges.  This incident is stated to be the starting point of the ‘First War of Independence’ or the ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ as the British historians called it.

Mangal Pandey was captured and he was hanged on 8th April 1857. He is considered as the first martyr of the First Was of Independence. The above photo show the memorial erected for him at Barrackpore where he was hanged and cremated.

How many valuable lives of the people of India have been sacrificed at the altar of independence! We remember Mangal Pandey on hisMangal_pandey_gimp 159th Martyrdom Day!

B.T.Ranadive, death anniversary

download (11)
6th April 2016 is the 26th death anniversary of Comrade B.T.Ranadive, the doyen of Indian trade Union movement. Under his leadership, the working class fought many battles.A true revolutionary in all respects, he was respected by the entire trade unions, irrespective of affiliations.

He was closely connected with the P and T Trade union movement. More than forty years till his death in 1990, he guided and gave advice to the Central government employees movement.

Personally, I had the great fortune of getting his advice and guidance in many of the struggles that the P and T workers had organised.

We pay respectful homage to the memory of Com. B.T.Ranadive! Red Salute Comrade!

Opinions and Comments

05 Tuesday Apr 2016

I am happy that many comrades, friends and well- wishers are sending comments and opinions supporting and appreciating the views expressed or opposing and having a different view. Both appreciations and criticisms are welcome and I am much thankful to all of them. I reply to their points in addition to publishing their comments.
But in some rare cases, the comments are full of abuses and unfounded accusations, which are neither suitable nor appropriate for being published or answered in social media. Hence those friends should excuse me for not publishing them and answering them. It is once again pointed out I am not averse to any criticism but it should be in a publishable form.
V.A.N.Namboodiri

First Communist Ministry, Kerala

In the first elections conducted for the state assembly in 1957 after formation of Kerala State, the Communist Party won and the Communist Ministry with Com.E.M.S.Namboodiripad was formed. The ministry was sworn on 5th April 1957.It was a ministry with stalwarts like EMS, T.V.Thomas, K.R.Gowri Amma, C.Achutha Menon. V.R.Krishna Iyer, Joseph Mundassery and others. It implemented important legislations like Land Bill, Education Bill etc. which made a basis for future programmes and progress.

The ministry was dismissed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru without any justification. The first Communist Ministry and Com.EMS will ever be remembered since they laid the foundation for the fast growth of the state in various fields.

At least 50% IDA should be merged immediately

BSNL, CG employees, Merger of 50% IDA, VII CPS

After the 2007 wage settlement in BSNL and other PSUs which continues with 10 year wage revision (BSNLEU had demanded 5 year wage revision), the IDA has gone up to 112.4% w.e.f. 01-01-2016. Wage revision is due from 01-01-2017, but the DPE has not issued any guidelines in the matter, either in the case of executives or non-executives. Employees are put to much hardship due to the high cost of living and due to the non-merger of IDA. At least, half of the DA should be merged immediately, with out waiting for the wage revision.

Though the VII CPC has submitted its report to the Government on the pay scales of the central government employees w.e.f. 01-01-2016, the latter has neither implemented it nor given any merger of the DA as used to be given.

The delay is unwarranted and unjustified. We demand the government to take necessary decision in the matter and order merger of at least 50% DA to the PSU employees, including BSNL.
