WFTU Message on COVID-19

Dear men and women colleagues,

We live in a period of Pandemic, where the Coronavirus is spreading to the four corners of the world.

On behalf of the World Federation of Trade Unions, we want to congratulate the workers all over the world, because through their work they provide all goods for the survival of the Peoples. The workers are those who produce food, medicine, services, machines, transport, communication and everything. They deserve our warm “well done”.

We also congratulate all workers at Health sectors, who give a heroic struggle to treat the patients, at the risk of their own life.

This is the one side of the river, the ones who stand out for their humanitarianism, solidarity, social offer.

On the opposite side of the river, we see the filth, exploitation, thirst for capitalist profits. The monopolies, the international bourgeoisie are showing their true face. Speculation. Profits soaked with the blood and suffering of the ordinary people.

In Athens ten days ago, a simple face mask was sold at 1 euro and today it is sold at 10 euros.

In Turkey five days ago, a kilo of pasta was sold at one Turkish Lira and now it is sold at 12 Turkish Lira.

In Bangladesh ten days ago, a simple mask was sold at 20 Taka and now it is sold at 150 Taka.

In Madrid five days ago, a mask was sold at 2,5 euros and today it is sold at 25 euros.

In Africa, in Nigeria, the disinfectant liquid from 2 dollars, today it is sold at 8 dollars.

Off course, excessive prices and speculation also apply to meat, rice and all basic food products.

The multinationals utilize the Pandemic in order to lay off workers or cut their labor rights.

Dear fellow workers, unemployed and pensioners,

We call upon all trade unions to reveal and inform workers on the speculation strategy of the monopolies.

To demand necessary measures for the protection of the ordinary people to be taken by the governments and all competent parties.

We must demand immediate measures of social protection. Defense of our working and salary rights.

Only through our resistance and struggle we can defend our rights.

The big militant family of WFTU, which this year is celebrating 75 years of life and rich action, is present once more, at the forefront and until the final victory!

We wish all the best for you and for your People.

25 Jan 2019
The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), representing 95 million workers of the five continents as well as the world class-oriented labor movement, strongly rejects the attempted coup d’état against the legitimate government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

This interference, orchestrated by the US government, NATO and the EU and executed by the representatives of the transnationals and monopolies in the country, constitutes a flagrant violation of the most elementary rules of international law and of the Venezuela’s sovereignty. For the WFTU, it is an inalienable right of each people to decide for themselves, without outside interventions, on their present and future.

At the same time, the WFTU reaffirms, as it has already done on several occasions, its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, with the working class and our affiliated organizations in the country in front of this imperialist threat. In addition, we call on the Venezuelan people to reject the maneuvers of the imperialists and their lackeys in the region, to condemn the plans of the murderers of the peoples. We will continue to support the Venezuelan working class, for the deepening of the Bolivarian process, until the abolition of man by man exploitation, towards a new world, without wars and imperialist barbarism. This is the only way forward to repel the plans of the imperialists.

Long live internationalist solidarity!

WFTU statement on the extend of the retirement age limit of civil servants to 80 years in Japan
21 Feb 2018

ASIA, JAPAN

The government of Japan decided to extend the age limit for retirement of the civil servants to 80 years. This policy is decided with pretext the financial management of the state budget and is supposedly promoted as a optional measure.

The reality is the Japan holds the worst record on rate the pensioners who lives in the poverty limit among the development countries. Almost one out of 5 pensioners (19%) lives in the limit of the poverty. The lack of adequate funding of the pensions and the pensioners’ needs, is taking place at the same time that the government is moving on the review and increase of the army budget.

The high rates of poverty and the low standard of living of the Japanese pensioners will force them to choose the supposedly optional measure of postponing their retirement. The World Federation of Trade Union, representing more than 92 million workers demands the immediate support of Japanese pensioners and the implementation of dignified pensions and standard of living for the retires simultaneously with a low retirement age limit.

AIBDPA fully supports the WFTU and demands the Japan government not to increase the retirement age.

Report from TUI (pensioners and Retirees) Britain

03 Monday Jul 2017

Report of Activity during 2017 from Pensioners and Retirees in Britain to Quim Boix, Secretary, TUI(P and R).

This year of 2017 for Pensioners and Retirees in Britain has so far been one of struggle. Britain; similar to other European and Worldwide countries continues to suffer from the attacks of the ongoing crisis of Capitalism and its attempt to offload the crisis to workers and Retired peoples.
Following the result of the Referendum of the British people to leave the European Union in 2016, continuing attacks on are being attempted to deny that democratic decision. Cuts to Pensions, Housing, Education, Social Care to name a few of hard won rights are being attempted.
The Conservative Government in May decided to call a quick General Election, due to opinion poles and the recent election results in parts of Europe and elsewhere, thinking “the time was right” to increase its majority in Parliament to facilitate further draconian cuts. The Political Opposition of the British Labour Party during 2015/2016 had suffered losses and divisions, caused mainly by its members of Parliament refusing to accept the overwhelming rank-and-file membership to elect a progressive Leader, so the Government took advantage of this also and called a snap election, and published a draconian manifesto attacking Workers and Pensioners alike. The response from Trade Unions and Pensioners, and also young people was immediate. The Labour Party in turn published a progressive manifesto calling for better housing, improved Pensions, abolition of Student University Fees, the end of Privatisation of Transport, Energy, A new Social Care Consultation Programme, The abolition of Anti-Trade Union legislation etc. The mobilisation of the Trade Unions, Students, the Unemployed and Pensioners and Retired People around this manifesto successfully prevented the Conservative Government obtaining its attempt to make the people pay for the crisis of Capitalism.
The struggle is not yet won of course, but there is a new air of optimism to carry on that struggle. Unity is Strength.

TUI(P&R) USA

TUI(P&R) unit of United States has demanded the government to safeguard and protect the pension of retirees. Details are given below:

“Stop the ‘Ripoff’ of Pensioners and Retirees: Full pension protection from a fully funded Federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC): no loopholes. Stop State reductions in Pensions and benefits such as are occurring in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).   Elevate the Social Security Administration’s wage/salary “cap” on wage deductions to $1million. Tax on Social Security Administration wage benefits should start at $750,000 and up. Maintain and expand the largely working class federal and state health programs of Medicare and Medicaid. Begin a yearly reduction in Medicare eligibility to full coverage for all.”

Pensioners are in struggle to safeguard and protect their rights. They want to live a decent life for which they have worked for three- four decades.

Greece, Israel, WFTU

the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has expressed its strong reservation and protest against the intensification of co-operation between Greece and Israel. An expert from the statement is reproduced below:

“The WFTU considers the intensification of the cooperation between Greece and Israel not only dangerous for the Palestinian people who are daily suffering from the Israeli Occupation. This co-operation is dangerous for the general peace around the Mediterranean Sea. Mediterranean Sea is threatened by this new development. This is part of the  imperialist plan  for Higher share from the exploitation of the wealth-producing resources.

The military relationship of Greece with Israel not only undermines the Palestinian People and the  people of Lebanon, of Syria, of the whole North Africa and Promotes the studs of the Imperialists for the so called New Middle East.

The WFTU demands  the Greek Government to vote in the Greek Parliament the recognition of the Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as capital as per the borders of 1967 to denounce the Israeli Occupation  and to end the military cooperation and the training jointly with Israel.

Also, the WFTU demands the cancellation of the plan of Offering of a Greek Island to NATO, to use as wide military base.”
