Massive Strike by workers in Greece

Greece, Massive Strike

A 24 hr general strike was held in Greece on 17 May 2017, as well as the strike rallies and demonstrations of the All-worker’s Militant Front (PAME) in dozens of cities, against the measures which the coalition government of the “Left” party of SYRIZA and the nationalist party of ANEL brought for discussion on that day in Parliament. Protest demonstrations will be organized by PAME all over the country on 18th of May, the day the measures will be voted on.

Thousands of workers through their mass participation in the strike on the 17th of May all over the country declared : ““We will not become the slaves of the 21st century.”

In Athens the strike rally of PAME ended with a large march to Parliament.

It is worth noting that the measures the SYRIZA-ANEL government brought after the negotiations with the imperialist unions of the EU and IMF for the 2nd evaluation of the 3rdMemorandum. It is clear from the results that the government negotiated with the lenders on behalf of the interests of the domestic monopoly groups and not the people, with the aim of accelerating the process of an exit from the capitalist crisis that favours capital.

The new raft of anti-people measures further escalates the assault, thrusts new burdens onto the already struggling popular households, at the same time when better conditions are being formed for the activity of the business groups (such as the new measures to liberalize the market and accelerate privatizations).

In brief, the measures provide for:

· New reductions in salaries and pensions, so for example, with the result that the pensioners will lose a sum equivalent to two months’ pensions a year

· Increase of direct taxation even for those who have a low income, through the reduction of the tax threshold. So, for example, a salaried employee who earns 615 euros a month and who does not pay any direct taxes today, will be called onto to pay up to 300 euros of tax a year, i.e. almost half a month’s salary.

· New reductions in public funds for healthcare spending.

· New cuts to various benefits (unemployment, heating).

· There are other measures to support capital in the new agreement, such as the increase of privatizations, the complete liberalization of mass dismissals for big capitalist businesses, the legislation of new obstacles to the calling of strikes, the consolidation of all the anti-workers laws on collective labour agreements passed since 2011, the creation of new obstacles for the signing of collective labour agreements, the legalization of “lock outs” organized by the employers, the abolition of the Sunday holiday with painful consequences for retail workers and small shopkeepers, with aim of accelerating the concentration of the retail sector into department stores and supermarket chains etc.

These new measures will have a cumulative impact in a period when the situation of most employees and self-employed has already deteriorated dramatically due to the policies both of the previous ND-PASOK governments and the current SYRIZA-ANEL government.

In 2016, 45% of the population had an income under the fixed poverty line.

The GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, attended the strike rally of PAME in the Ethnikis Antistasis sq. in Athens and made the following statement to the mass media: “The class war is now in progress, it is a marathon, not a rifle shot in the air. The class war must be a daily and continuous one. The harsh anti-people measures, the 4th memorandum along with the previous memorandums must be thrown in the dustbin of History and the only ones who have the authority to do this are the Greek people, the labour-people’s movement.

For that reason, our call is: Popular uprising everywhere, not a day or hour must be wasted; the struggle doesn’t end today or tomorrow but continues.

The KKE, the class-oriented forces, the militant movement, PAME, the Social Alliance will be present, every day, everywhere, in the streets and in the Parliament, in the factories, in the cities and the villages. This is a constant struggle, which must lead to the overthrow of this rotten and corrupt system, of its governments, for disengagement from the EU, with a social and economic plan which will have at its epicenter the working people, the ever-expanding needs of our people.”

Oppose the formation of Tower Company tooth and nail.

BSNL, opposition, Tower company

It is reported that the government of India has approved formation of a tower company, bifurcating BSNL. This decision is to be condemned and opposed with all our might. The above decision of the government is to disintegrate BSNL by making it a loss making company and then sell strategically or otherwise.

The Forum of BSNL Unions and Associations has taken the correct decision to oppose the formation of tower company. The programme on 26th October 2016 should be made a massive action with participation of maximum workers.

BSNL Employees Union and the Forum of BSNL Unions and Associations have the proud record of defeating government decisions on disinvestment of BSNL, VRS/CRS of one lakh workers as also unbundling of the valuable cables for the benefit of the private players. Till now, the government could not implement any of these decisions for which the workers and unions have to be congratulated for their rock like unity and firm determination which defeated the govt. decisions.

It is hoped that all the unions/associations will join together to defeat the attack on BSNL and its workers. We can not allow BSNL to be disintegrated. Fight to the last!

Our Demands before the new government

New government, Workers issues

A new government is being formed at the centre, under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi, consequent to the landslide victory of BJP.

The corporates, capitalists, big business and so on have stated that this is the victory of capitalism and that the new government should reduce the corporate taxes, give a free hand to the employers on hiring ( and firing) of labour, 50% shares of PSU Banks should be disinvested and so on. They will immediately meet the Prime Minister and other Ministers with their demand in the name of development and try to get maximum benefit. This is but natural, when they have already invested in both the NDA and UPA huge amounts towards election donation.

But what about the workers and their demands. It is necessary that the Central trade Unions as well as independent all India Federations have to act fast. The demands of the workers have to be placed before the new government for early settlement. The unions / workers have to be mobilised. The false arguments of the corporates for maximising profit have to be countered.

There is no time to lose. The new government may act fast. The workers have to be faster.

Comrade P.V.Chandrasekharan, a dynamic leader

PV Chandrasekharan

Whenever you think about the BSNL Trade Union movement in Kerala, there is one outstanding leader, who is still vibrant and is the guide and Advisor of the movement, not only of BSNL but the entire P and T TU movement. He is Com. P.V.Chandrasekharan, former Circle President of BSNLEU and earlier Circle Secretary of the AITE Union Class III for long 25 years. At present he is the Circle President of AIBDPA and all India Patron of the same, in addition to Vice-President of CGPA Kerala.
A charming personality with intimate connection with all the workers and leaders, he has been in the progressive movement since his student days. Through the Students Federation and later through the P and T movement after joining P and Department, he continues to be one of the strongest leaders fully committed to the working Class ideology.
During his service, he was victimised cruelly several times through punishments, suspension, transfer to isolated places despite his frail health etc. After my tenure as Circle Secretary and when handing over the same to Com.PVC, as he is fondly called, I had the full confidence that here is one comrade who will be faithful to the working class and make all out efforts for the onward march and achievements of the workers.
The telecom workers, nay central Govt. Employees and Pensioners also, look to Com. PVC for continued leadership and guidance in their sustained struggles and organisational activities.
He is now engaged with preparation of a book on the P and Trade Union movement in Kerala. The P and T Workers are eagerly waiting for the book to be released.
My Best Wishes and Revolutionary Greetings to Comrade P.V.Chandrasekharan. We expect more and more contributions from him to the cause of the working class!

BSNL proposes to encash its land assets.

BSNL, land assets, projects

It is reported that BSNL is proposing to monetise its land assets in Mumbai and Delhi and other parts of the country to make up for the loss of last four years and for development and expansion. Immediately the proposal is with regard to the 37 acres in Borivali, 6.63 acres in Santa Cruz, 25.5 acres in Deonar (all in Mumbai) and 1.48 acres in Sector -33, Noida and 0.84 acres in Sector-18 Noida (all in Delhi). BSNL projects to use these for housing and commercial purposes.
According to the reports, the assets of the BSNL land all over India comes to about Rs. 13,500 crores. (This can not in any way be correct. BSNL has land all over India, in all places in the centre of the towns/cities. The land value will be more than 10 times more than this at the least).
The question is how these lands will be used? Whether lease it or sell it? Or whether develop by BSNL and rent it?
We are of the strong opinion that these issues should be discussed with the recognised unions/Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations, before embarking on the project. The pros and cons of the entire project is to be decided and if it is to be implemented, it has also to be ensured that it has to be done in a very transparent way to avoid corrupt practices.

Spectrum charges – No decision by Telecom Commission

27 Sunday May 2012

The meeting of the Telecom Commission held yesterday did not take any decision on the spectrum charges. It has decided to refer it back to TRAI for an analysis of the issue by  before submitting it to the Group of Ministers headed by Pranab Mukherjee.

TRAI headed by J.S.Sharma has earlier recommended the basic charges to be fixed for auction which was strongly opposed by the telecom companies stating that the  increased charges will result in higher charges for the users. Now a new Chairman Rahul Khullar has been appointed for TRAI, the government may be seeking to reduce the basic charges to please the private telcos.
