The Demonstration/Dharna called by Forum a great success.

The notice for today’s dharna was given at short notice. But the reaction was fantastic. From the reports received so far, the demonstrations have been organised with good participation in almost all the SSAs.

In Corporate Office Delhi, it was dharna instead of demonstration. Hundreds of comrades participated in the dharna. The workers raised slogans focussing the demands on the basis of which the dharna was organised.

Com. VAN Namboodiri, Convener of the Forum, inaugurated the dharna. Coms. P.Abhimanyu, GS BSNLEU, Prahlad Rai GS AIBSNLEA, G.L.Jogi President SNEA and leaders of all the organisations addressed. The Circle Secretaries assured that the strike from 13th June will be a good strike in Corporate office and NTR.

Bandh, Demonstrations against price rise today- Forum programmes also

31 Thursday May 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in TU News - India

On 31st May, today, various parties have given call for Bandh, rallies, protest demonstrations, rasta roko and other programmes of struggles against the intolerable petrol price hike, which will escalate the prices of all essential commodities. During the last few years of the UPA government, the price of petrol has been hiked more than 15 times, making the price almost double.

Who gets benefit out of imposing this burden on the common people and the working class? It is the private and PSU Oil Companies and the Central and State governments. The real price of petrol is only about half, the other half being the customs duty, taxes etc. The government which should subsidise the poor for their daily requirements is subsidising the rich and corporates to amass wealth at the same time imposing high tax on petrol and other essential commodities.

Tha is why not only the opposition parties including the Left Parties, but also even allies of the government have come to the streets. Most of the trade unions have called for demonstrations and other  forms of agitation.

BSNLEU has given call for participating in the protest demonstrations and other protest programmes.

In addition, the protest demonstrations on our own demands, which the Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations also have to be implemented effectively. If the Forum programme could not be organised due to Bandh etc. today, it is to be organised tomorrow, 1st June 2012.

PPP – a new method of privatisation and source for corruption

30 Wednesday May 2012

It is not surprising that the government is hell-bent on Public-Private Participation (PPP) projects in almost all sectors. But experiences have shown that it is a source of corruption and handing over valuable national assets at cheap rate to big business and MNCs.

Take the new airports in Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad etc. which have been given to private companies. Now they are charging huge rates from travellers for airport charges. The private contractors are charging heavy toll charges for using the public road.

The PPP means utilisng the public assets for private profit. Can we support it?

FDI in Retail – The Mexican Warning

30 Wednesday May 2012

Government of India and specially the Prime Minister and Finance Minister are batting for increase of FDI in retail sector. It was only due to the strong opposition from the opposition parties even from some of the allies of the UPA government that they have been unable to pass the bill on increase of FDI.

Why opposition parties are against increased FDI. It will destroy the crores of small retail traders and their families if these MNCs like Wall-Mart are allowed to open their shops in India. The experience of Mexica has been explained by a write-up in the Business Line today, under the heading ‘A Mexican Warning on retail FDI’. It states that Wall-Mart has taken over nearly half of Mexico’s retail business with just over 2 lakh employees. In contrast Indian retail sector employes 4 crores. Where these 4 crores and their families will go. No other place but to unemployment.

Another issue is gross corruption. Wall-Mart grew only thorough bribery and corruption. Hence we have continue our opposition and defeat the government move to increase the FDI in retail sector.

NTP – Licence for 10 years instead of 20

In order to help the private companies and to reduce the charges they have to pay, the DOT is proposing to make the licence period to be 10 years instead of 20 years. We have to make our opinion as to which is beneficial for BSNL.

In the meanwhile, the new TRAI Chairman Shri Rahul Khullar has supported the note submitted by the earlier Chairman increasing the spectrum charges. The private companies have been aggressively opposing it.
