Air India – Punish the guilty, not the public

31 Wednesday May 2017

The NITI Ayog has recommended strategic sale of Air India, the national carrier, as part of its revival. The so called  justification is that Air India is in loss and that it has a debt of about Rs.  50,000 to Rs.60,000 crore.

The loss is only due to mismanagement  and anti-PSU decisions of government. CBI is looking in to the loss of Rs. 70,000 crore to Air India due unnecessary purchase of about 111 planes during UPA GOvt. Profitable air routes have been transferred to private companies causing huge loss to central government.

Instead of punishing the culprits for the loss, govt is moving to sell the PSU. Oppose and defeat this sinister move and save the PSU.

CITU, Foundation Day

Com.B.T.Ranadive, first President of CITU

Today, 30th May 2017, is the 47th Foundation Day Anniversary of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the militant organisation of the workers in India. It was formed on 30th May 1970 under the leadership of Coms. B.T.Ranadive and P.Ramamurti, the first President and General Secretary of CITU.

In all the 17 united all India strikes organised against the anti-worker neo-liberal policies of the Congress and BJP governments, it took a pivotal role. CITU was the one union which participated in all these strikes. CITU is affiliated to WFTU.

E.Balanandan, M.K.Pandhe, Chittabrata Mazumdar, Mohammed Amin, A.K.Padmanabhan, Tapan Sen, Hemalatha and other CITU leaders encouraged and inspired the BSNL employees in their forward march.

Kerala the biggest buyers of GOLD in India

Gold, India, Kerala

As per report of the World Gold Council, indian purchase of gold ornaments in the first quarter of 2017 accounted for more than one fifth of the world demand.

And Kerala, a small state, is number one in India. It spends about Rs. 208.55 per month in Rural areas and Rs. 189.95 in urban areas as per the report. The T.Nadu and Goa, who are in the second and third positions are spending Rs. 44.86 and Rs. 34.07. Other states are far behind.

The craze for Gold in Kerala has historical, economical and religious back ground. But does that justify this unusual craze?

Central government promised 2 crore jobs – created only 6 lakhs!

Government, job loss

According to the Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, 6 lakh job has been created during the last three years of Modi Government. But what was the promise? It was assured that 2 crore jobs will be created.

The fact is that crores of qualified youngsters are entering the employment market, but only a few percent of the same are getting employed. Even many of the employed are losing jobs. While crores of government and PSU employees are retiring from service, not even 50% of those vacancies are being filled up. Corporate houses like Wipro, Infosys, Tata etc. are retrenching workers in thousands. Due to the merger of 6 associated banks with the State Bank of India, almost 17,000 employees are going to lose jobs. Even the IT sector jobs are gradually  moving towards stagnation.

It is easy to promise, but is difficult to implement until and unless there is determination and hardwork. The central government is lacking  both as far as creating employment opportunities are concerned.

Leather Industry under tension

Leather industry

The recent orders of the central government with regard to the sale of cattle has started shivers in the leather market. Many multi-national organisations  like Marks & Spencer, Zara, Hugo Boss, Armani, Prada, Bata etc.are feeling the heat. They are frantically trying to ensure  that leather supply for foot-wear, hand bags, belts, jackets etc. are maintained.

There is great tension in the leather markets of Kanpur, Agra etc. where tens of thousands of workers are employed in manufacture of foot-wear, bags etc. It is reported that the leather industry of about $ 13 billion, both Indian and exports, is in panic.

The price for the leather goods may go up in a big way and people will have to pay heavy for the same.

Is the government hearing?

Centre’s Ban on Cattle for Slaughter – Kerala will not implement

ban on cattle slaughter

Kerala Chief Minister Com. Pinarayi Vijayan has stated that the state government will not implement the ban on cattle slaughter ordered by the central government. He stated :”The state government will give all facilities to the people to have food of their choice”. He added ” There is no need for Keralites to learn it from anybody in Delhi or Nagpur”. Nagpur is the HQ of RSS.

One is remembered of the bold decision taken by EMS Government in connection with the 19th September 1968 strike of the Central Government employees. When  the Indira  Government promulgated Essential Service Maintenance Ordinance (ESMO) against the strike, Kerala Chief Minister Com.  EMS Namboodiripad announced that he will not implement it in Kerala, despite the threat of the ministry being dismissed.

The Left Democratic Front Government in Kerala was always with the people and their interests.

AI and AI

Air india, Disinvestment, PSU

So far AI meant Air India. But now the ‘AI’ is more and more being used for Artificial Intelligence.

Government wants to eliminate Air India by closure or by strategic sale. Then, only one  AI will be there – Artificial Intelligence, which means more and more robots and robotics, mainly benefitting the corporates, rich and powerful, thus reducing the workforce.

However, the Air India workers and the people will not allow the major PSU, Air India, to be privatised. There is going to be sustained struggles, that I am sure.
