Attitude towards historical monuments.

30 Saturday Jun 2012

During my stay in UK I found that the British are very much eager and anxious to keep their traditions and historical monuments safely and with respect. They also have a methodical way of maintaining written documents about  these.Whether it is about a place, a building, a village church or anything like that. Even constructing a building in the village has to be according to the tradition of that area. The large number of museums and memorials are also in the same line. A lot of tourists are also coming from all countries to visit these places.

But what about our own country, India? Take the instance of Delhi alone. It was the capital of 7 or 8 dynasties and each had their separate capitals with forts and other connected buildings etc. During the growth and expansion of Delhi, many of these have been demolished, vandalised, occupied and also constructions made on these. It is the same with many historical things.

We, Indians, have to change our attitude and keep things for the future generations.

London prepares for Olympics

27 Wednesday Jun 2012

London has been in preparation for the Olympic Games for the last four years or more, though the same is to be held in July 2012. Almost every arrangement is finalised months back, before the games. Wherever you go, you can see the publicity for the same. The newspapers and media are full of reports about the coming event and the chance for UK in the various events. The opportunity is being used as a platform for improving the image of the country amongst the world nations.

Compare what happened in India in connection with the preparation for the Common Wealth Games two years back? Of course, there was wide publicity, but publicity for the worst. Despite money lavishly spent, the arrangements were not ready till the last-minute. Thousands of crore of rupees were pocketed by unscrupulous persons  in the State Government, the Organising Committee and all committees connected  with the games. The country  was shamed before the entire world.

It is high time that India and the its people should act  and act decisively against corruption and the culprits involved.

State Bank to recruit 10500 workers

27 Wednesday Jun 2012

State Bank of Indiat will recruit about 10,500 employees during the current financial year to manage the growing business of the bank.
“This year, the bank would make 9,500 clerical level appointments and nearly 1,000 probationary officers to be inducted,”  SBI Chairman  Pratip Chaudhuri  stated.
The process would be completed by Dussehra, he added. According to the annual report of SBI, overall staff strength declined by 7,452 employees during the last fiscal.
As on March 31, 2012, the bank had a total permanent staff strength of 2,15,481, which included 80,404 officers, 95,715 clerical staff and the remaining 39,362 were sub-staff.

As stated in my blog earlier, a situation has arisen in all PSUs the need for new recruitment. Instead of engaging contract workers, new recruitment should be done. The unions have to pressure strongly for the same.

‘Peoples Democracy’, the voice of the Communists

47 years have passed since the publication of ‘Peoples Democracy’, the weekly organ of the CPI(M) has started. The first  issued was issued on 27th June 1965, about one year after its break with CPI.

‘Peoples Democracy’ during these last five decades have helped to educate a lot of comrades about the policy of the party, the latest developments and also the strategy and tactics of the party. It has been a guide to the party workers and progressive section of people.

My Greetings and best Wishes to the journal and the comrades behind it! I hope it will continue its ideal role in the future also.

No repeat of ‘National Emergency’

26 Tuesday Jun 2012

Though 37 years have passed since the ‘National Emergency’ was declared by the Indira Gandhi government on 25th June 1975, the  grim memory of the same haunts even now. Civil liberties were denied, democracy & democratic values given a go by and political  and trade union leaders were put in jail without any reason only to continue the regime. The true dark face of the government was exposed.

Yes, the people reacted and within two years, the government was compelled to order general election and the Indira Government faced utter failure at the polls. For the first time India saw a non-congress government, the Janata Government composed of many political parties merged in to one.

35 years have passed after the fall of the emergency. Everybody who cherishes democracy has to be on guard that such excess never happen again.

Auction not the only method for sale of natural resources – Govt.

25 Monday Jun 2012

The government on Monday told the Supreme Court that “auction cannot be the only permissible method for disposal of natural resources” and a uniform policy on their distribution is “neither practical nor can it subserve the common good”.

The Centre also asserted that the allocation of natural resources is a policy matter and beyond the purview of judicial review.

The submissions of the government came in response to the questions framed by the apex court on Presidential Reference moved by it (government) for its opinion on issues arising out of its 2G spectrum allocation judgement including whether auctioning of natural resources across all sectors is mandatory.

Supporting the policy of first-come-first-served, the government said, “Ultimately the method of allocation of natural resources, apart from being governed by the principles of fairness and transparency, should also take into account the dynamic concept of public interest which also includes within its ambit the larger economic perspective and not merely financial gain.”

Further, it said the desirability to have fairness and transparency in state auction does not lead to the conclusion that “auction is the only way” in which one can proceed further.

“The disposal and distribution of natural resources has to be made in accordance with the sector specific requirement of each natural resource. The method of distribution of natural resource has to take into account the nature of natural resource and economic policy underlying the effective utilisation of such resource,” the Centre said.

It is clear from the above statement of the government that it wants to continue the corruption and to favour the private parties they want to.

Redeem humanity from bondage of capitalism – Shaheed Bhagat Singh

25 Monday Jun 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in History

Shaheed Bhagat Singh was not only an example of supreme sacrifice for the independence of the country, but was even in his young age a well-studied person with clear ideas about the future tasks and also how to change the country and the world. It was his slogan “Inquilab Zindabad” (Victory to Revolution) which still rings loud throughout the country and the world. I am reproducing two paragraphs from his statement submitted to the Sessions Court Delhi on 6th June 1929 in as accused in the Assembly Bomb case along with Batukeswar Dutt (He was only 23 years when he was hanged by the British   on 23rd March 1931) as an example of the high level of understanding he has reached even by that time.

“The whole edifice of this civilisation, if not saved in time, shall crumble. A radical change, therefore, is necessary and it is the duty of those who realise it to reorganise society on socialistic basis. Unless this thing is done and the exploitation of man by man and of nations by nations is brought to an end, suffering and carnage with which humanity is threatened today, can not be prevented. All talk of ending war and ushering in an era of universal peace is undisguised hypocrisy.

” By Revolution, we mean the ultimate establishment of an order of society which may not be threatened by such break-down, and in which the sovereignty of the proletariat should be recognised and a world federation should redeem humanity from the bondage of capitalism and misery of imperial wars”

Recruitement in BSNL is urgent

25 Monday Jun 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in BSNL - Better Service to the Nation

Recruitment of new employees in BSNL has become an urgent necessity. The six lakh workers in Dept. of Telecom in 1984, has now been reduced to about 2.70 lakh workers. Though the use of latest technology and computerization have to a certain extent reduced the required number of staff, the present situation of shortage of staff is adversely affecting the services. The shortage is adjusted by outsourcing the services.  Of course, this is part of the neo-liberal policy of the government.

The unions have to seriously discuss the issue and put the demand for recruitment of staff wherever required to effectively maintain the services.

A meeting of Indian Communists & Workers in UK

25 Monday Jun 2012

It was an educative and pleasant experience. I got the opportunity to attend the Conference of the Association of Indian Communists Great Britain and the Indian Workers Association on 22-23 June at Leicester (pronounced as Lestor), one of the major cities in UK.  I was invited as a visitor to the august Conference by the Secretary, Com. Harsev Bains, whom I got acquainted when I visited UK last time. The Conference was held at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial House which is the own building of the Leicestor unit of AIC & IWA. The hall was named Com. Surjeet Nagar in honour of Com. Har Kishan Singh Surjeet, the veteran leader of CPI(M).

The Public Rally was addressed by Coms. Sitaram Yechury, PBM, CPI(M) and Robert Griffiths, General Secreetary of Communist Party of Britain. Both of them spoke on the international situation and also on the sustained united struggles against the anti-worker policies of the imperialist rulers.

In addition, Com.Sitaram Yechury spoke in detail about the decisions of the 20th Party Congress of CPI(M) held at Calicut in April 2012 and also the tasks in the coming days. The present political situation in India was also explained.

The Indian Workers Association was formed in the 1960s and is closely connection with the British Trade Union movement. Many of the veteran leaders who started the organisation were present. There were many young comrades, especialliy those who belonged to Kerala and who functioned in the SFI and DYFI. I could interact with them and understand the difficulties being experienced by the students and new entrants to the UK from India.

I travelled to Leicestor in car along with Com. Santokh Singh, a senior leader of AIC and a well known progressive poet and another senior comrade. On 22nd night I stayed with the family of  Com. Rajinder Bains at Derby, about 30 miles from Leicestor. He and his family arranged convenient stay and food.

The two days conference not only gave me the chance to learn about the Indians in the UKbut also enriched me with a lot of friends and comrades. The arrnagements for the conference and all the proceedings were well arranged and fruitful. Com. Harsev Bains was reelcted as Secretary unanimously.

THE GLORIOUS ACHIEVENTS OF 34 YEARS OF LF GOVT OF WB

22 Friday Jun 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in General

I am reproducing below a write up by Com. Mihir Das Gupta on the achievements of LF Government of WB during its 34 years rule:

On this day 35 years back (21st June, 1977) Left Front Govt. came to power in West Bengal with sweeping people’s mandate. This triumph came with the background of intense mass and class struggles spread over several decades and immense sacrifice by the Leftist political workers, thousands of whom had laid down their lives. Also in the background was there the authoritarian and semi-fascist rule in the state. Unfortunately it was defeated in the last year’s Assembly Elections.

The present ruling party and most of the big media, both print and electronic – national and international, are trying to portray that the 34 years of LF Govt. in West Bengal had been a total disaster. This is nothing but utter lie and devoid of any substance. I like to reiterate here a few (not exhaustive) epoch making achievements of the successive seven LF governments in the state. Late Comrade Jyoti Basu led it as the Chief Minister for long 23 years, followed by Com. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Restoration of democracy and extending democratic values and functioning in all walk of the society – village panchayats, municipalities, educational institutions, cooperative societies and in many other fields. Unconditional release of political prisoners of all colours. Successful establishment of elected three-tier panchayat – devolution of enormous power and fund to such local bodies. Not using any draconian and anti-democratic law – not a single detention for democratic movement without trial. Achieving positive changes in centre-state relations to a great extent – arbitrary power of the Centre to impose President’s Rule in states became a matter of history. No intervention of police and administration to foil peaceful trade union movements for the interest of the owners. Extension of peace, amity and communal harmony in all walk of social life. Successful land reform and operation ‘Barga”. Extension of free education and health care. Converting the state of West Bengal from chronic deficit to surplus in food production. Converting the state from chronic deficit to surplus in power generation. Increasing purchasing power of the rural poor enormously. Creating a congenial atmosphere for modern industrialization. Making the state a destination of IT sector.  Showing a viable alternative path inside the prevailing economic structure of the country. Showing the political direction of how to run a coalition government successfully over a very long time. First time in the country, LF Govt. lowered the Voting Age to 18 years in case of municipal elections, which was within the power of the state govt.

THESE GLORIOUS ACHIEVEMENTS CAN’T BE WIPED OUT!

WE’LL NOT ALLOW WIPING IT OUT EITHER!

LEFTISM WILL NEVER DIE!
