KPRF, Russia

Moscow : The Communist Party of Russian Federation (KPRF) has made significant gains in the regional elections held in Russia on September 8, meanwhile the United Russia party led by the incumbent president Vladimr Putin lost a significant share of votes in several regions.

In the Moscow City Duma, KPRF increased their seats from 5 to 13 while the ruling United Russia managed to get 25 seats, losing 13 seats compared to the previous elections. Earlier, in August, massive protests erupted in Moscow against irregularities and discrimination in the scrutiny of nominations for the Moscow Duma.

Perspective Communiste reported that even in the constituency where Putin himself used to vote, the candidate of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF), Nikolai Gubenko, won with 58.29% of the votes.

In most of the regions, where elections were held– including Altai Republic, Mari El Republic, Volgograd Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai, Bryansk Oblast, Tula Oblast, Sakhalin Oblast etc.– the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF) won second place with better results compared to previous elections in 2014.  In the city of Sevastopol (Crimea), the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF) got three seats in the council for the first time since the Crimea joined Russia.

Following the announcement of the election results, the President of the Central Committee of the KPRF, Gennadi Zyuganov, said in a press conference that the Communist Party has maintained its presence and strengthens its position in all of the local parliaments.

US wants to capture our oil and mineral resources – Nicolas Maduro, President, Venezuela

31 Thursday Jan 2019

Caracas, January 30 : Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro assured Wednesday that the main reason for the growing pressure exerted by the United States against his government is the desire to seize its oil and mineral resources.
In an exclusive interview with the Russian outlet Sputnik, the president made reference to the mineral and natural wealth of his country as the reason behind Washington supporting coup efforts against his country.
“The direct reason is seizing the oil of Venezuela, because we have the largest oil reserves certified, we certify what will be the largest reserves of gold in the world, we have the fourth record of the world’s largest gas, and we have large reserves of coltan, diamonds, aluminum, iron, we have drinking water reserves throughout the national territory, we are an energy and natural resources powerhouse,” said the Venezuelan president.
President Nicolas Maduro reiterated that his country is a sovereign and independent nation and that it is not part of the U.S. backyard. “They (the United States) consider us their ‘backyard’ and we say that we are not anyone’s backyard, we are an independent republic.”
Given the possibilities of a dialogue with the opposition political sectors, the Venezuelan head of state reported that there are reserved contacts between authorities of several countries to try a new approach that puts an end to the situation in Venezuela.
“At the moment it is in the stage of private conversations, telephone conversations, among presidents, foreign ministers, our foreign minister Jorge Arreaza is very active, and we hope that there will be good results in the next few hours,” said the Venezuelan president.
He indicated that it is “several governments, several instances” that “have launched the idea of a dialogue supported by the governments of Mexico, Uruguay, Bolivia, Russia and other European countries.
The United States imposed sanctions on the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA Monday, blocking US$7 billion in company assets and warning that the payment of any purchase of crude oil made by local companies would go to blocked accounts.
However, the Bolivarian government responded that no vessel with crude oil will be landed in the United States, until payments are made to the Venezuelan government.(Courtesy: Ganashakti)

Fight climate change – 70,000 protest in Brussels

28 Monday Jan 2019

At least 70,000 people braved cold and rain in Brussels on Sunday to demand the Belgian government and the European Union increase their efforts to fight climate change, the Belgian capital’s fourth climate rally in two months to attract at least 10,000 participants.

The event was described as Belgium’s biggest climate march ever, with police estimating slightly bigger crowds than a similar demonstration last month. Trains from across the nation were so clogged that thousands of people didn’t make the march in time.

Some 35,000 students in Belgium skipped classes Thursday to take their demands for urgent action to prevent global warming to the streets.

“Young people have set a good example,” protester Henny Claassen said amid raised banners urging better renewable energy use and improved air quality. “This is for our children, for our grandchildren, and to send a message to politicians.”

Even though the direct impact on Belgian politics was likely to be small since the country currently is led by a caretaker government, the demonstrations have pushed the issue of climate change up the agenda as parties prepare for national and European Union elections in May.

The march ended at the headquarters of the European Union. The 28-nation bloc has been at the vanguard of global efforts to counter climate change but still came in for the protesters’ criticism.

North and South Koreas

South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, left, shakes hands with his North Korean counterpart Ri Son Gwon during their meeting at the southern side of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone, South Korea, Monday, Oct. 15, 2018. The rival Koreas are holding high-level talks Monday to discuss further engagement amid a global diplomatic push to resolve the nuclear standoff with North Korea.
Seoul, Oct 15: The two Koreas will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the reconnection of their railways and roads as early as next month, they agreed Monday, as Seoul pursues an approach to the nuclear-armed North increasingly diverging from the US.

The agreement was reached at a high-level meeting held at the truce village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone, which has hosted ever more frequent cross-border talks in recent months.

“The South and North agreed to hold the groundbreaking ceremony for the connection and modernisation of the east and west coast rail and road in late November or early December,” read a joint statement issued after the meeting. (APP)

Nagasaki Bombing

Peace Statue in Nagasaki

Tokyo, Aug 9 : Nagasaki is marking the 73rd anniversary of the atomic bombing over the city, joined by the head of the United Nations for the first time amid the effort to push forward North Korea’s denuclearization.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all countries to commit to nuclear disarmament and to take concrete steps as he raised concerns about the slowing effort.

He said fears of nuclear war are still present 73 years after the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings and that they should never be repeated.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue urged Japan’s government to do more to lead nuclear disarmament around the world.

The bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, was the second US nuclear attack on Japan, killing 70,000 people, three days after the bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed 140,000. (Press Report)

WFTU Statement on the 73 years since the dropping of atomic bombs

Hiroshima Bombing

06 Aug 2018

On August 6th 2018, seventy three years have completed since the crime in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 9th, by the US Imperialism , which in 1945 deprived the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and thousands of others in the coming years due to the effects of radiation in the territory.

The dropping of atomic bombs meant to intimidate the peoples, to send a “message” to the USSR, to the militant movement of all countries, to put the stamp of US intimidation to the international situation after the second world war.

The position of the USA and their allies generates new dangers for the wider region and mankind as a whole. The USA, NATO and European Union aim at plundering Third World Countries’ natural resources, strengthening their spheres of influence and tracing new borders. The dangers for the World Peace are grave. The inter-imperialist antagonisms are constantly being exacerbated.

The WFTU denies USA’s “right” to decide on who can and who is not allowed to have nuclear energy. No one has ever authorized USA to allow Israel, Pakistan, Turkey or S. Korea to have nuclear weapons while they are telling lies and excuses about others.

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), since the first year of its foundation in 1945, has had a clear and plain position against nuclear weapons. During all of its Congresses, decisions requesting the abolition of all nuclear weapons from all the countries have been voted.

Let there be ‘No More Hiroshima, Nagasaki’

Hiroshima, Nagasaki

On 6th August, in 1945, the United States dropped the atom bomb ‘Little Boy’ in Hiroshima in Japan killing more than one lakh people and maiming much more who suffered radiation and died later or suffered their entire life. Another bomb named ‘Fat Man’ was dropped in Nagasaki, in Japan itself on 9th August 1946, killing more than 80,000 and maiming more.

This massacre of common people, and not military, was carried out after the World War II was almost over and Germany has been defeated and Japan was going to surrender. In fact, it was a power show by the US and more than that, an experiment of dropping of atom bombs on the common innocent people to find out its destructive power. The cruel and demonic culture of imperialism was revealed to the entire world.

No more atom bombs have been used since then. But the horrible memory of those bombs is still fresh in the memory of not only the people of Japan, but the entire world.

Thousands and thousands of candles are being lit at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all over the world in the memory of those innocent people died due to the bombings.

Let there be no further Hiroshima or Nagasaki! Let the world be made free from such destructive weapons!

WFTU strongly condemns the murder of 12 protesters in India

The WFTU strongly condemns the murder of 12 protesters in India
23 May 2018ASIA, INDIA
The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing more than 92 million workers in 126 countries of the 5 continents strongly condemns the murder of at least 12 protesters who demanded the closure of the copper smelter of «Sterlite Copper» company. The company is an affiliate of the British monopoly “Vedanta” in southern India.

The protesters demanded the cancelation of the Sterlite-Copper’s plant opening which has been shut for more than 50 days and will remain closed until at least June 6 because the local pollution regulator did not allow it to operate due to environmental reasons.

Once again bourgeoisie ranks the people’s health and life lower than its profits and the riot-police defended these profits by murdering workers. The WFTU demands the definitive closure of the plant and the immediate punishment of the responsible ones for these murders.
