The 46th Indian Labour Conference held on 21st July 2015 at New Delhi has decided that the labour laws to be enacted should be first approved by the tripartite body of Government, employers’ organisations and trade unions. The Labour Minister, Bandaru Dattathreya, who presided over the meeting stated that such tripartite conference will be held shortly.

In this scenario, the labour bills proposed by the government like Wage Code Bill, Small Factories Act, Industries Code Bill, Factories Act, Child Labour Bill etc. will have to be discussed in the tripartite body, before they are presented in the Parliament.

With regard to the increase in the Bonus, no decision could be taken due to the strong opposition from the employers.

The various federations of the electricity employees have decided to go on strike against the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, which the BJP government is proposing to introduce in the ensuing session of Parliament, which is against the interest of the nation as well as the employees. The strike will be organised on the day of the introduction of the bill in the Parliament.

We extend our full support to the fully justified strike of the electricity employees!

The meeting of the All India Co-Ordination Committee of Public Sector Trade Unions (CITU), held at Hyderabad on 22nd June 2015 has called upon the entire PSU workers, including contract workers, to organise and make the One Day Strike called by the Central Trade Unions a big success.

The meeting was held at Com. Sunderayya Vignan Kendra, at Hyderabad. !52 delegates from 46 unions participated. From BSNLEU and BSNL Casual and Contract Workers Federation, Coms. V.A.N.Namboodiri, Swapan Chakraborty, J.Sampath Rao, Mohan Redyy, Taranath and Paripoornachari participated.

Meeting was presided by Com. Vishnu Mohanty, CITU Vice-President. Com. Tapan Sen, General secretary, CITU, inaugurated the convention. Com. Swadesh Dev Roy, Convener, Co-Ordination Committee, presented the report and reported the latest developments. More than 25 comrades participated in the discussion. Com. V.A.N.Namboodiri and Com. Swapan Chakraborty addressed on behalf of BSNLCCWF and BSNLEU respectively.

The Convention unanimously decided to make massive campaign amongst the workers about the anti-worker policies of the government. The policy of the government to close or privatise all the PSUs has to be resisted and defeated. The exploitation of the casual and contract workers have to be opposed and justice meted out to them. The immediate task is to campaign to make the strike a complete success. State level conventions should be organised. Without struggle, negotiations will not be successful. The report presented by the Convener was unanimously adopted. It was also suggested that a meeting of the CPSTU be held in preparation of the strike.

The meeting of the Co-ordination Committee and the discussions and decisions have enthused the delegates. All are determined to make the strike a big success.

Contract workers, wages

The Central Trade Unions have been strongly demanding for the last few years for equal wage and benefits for the contract workers just like regular workers. The NDA government had also moved in that direction. But now due to strong pressure from the employers and corporates, the government seem to be backtracking.

According to a survey about 55%in public sector and 45% in private sector jobs are got done by the contract workers. They are being exploited in wages as well as working conditions.

The Central Trade Unions have opposed the present move of the government and have warned that they will never agree to any such condition.

45th Anniversary, CITU

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the militant organisation of the Indian working class completes 45 years of its existence on 30th May 2015. Founded on 30th May 1970 at the Calcutta All India Conference, parting from the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), which was treading the revisionist path, the new organisation struggled forward  against the attack both from the government as well as from the parent organisation.

As stated above, CITU was formed in the All India Conference held t Calcutta from 28th to 31st May 1970. Com. B.T.Ranadive and Com. P.Ramamoorthy were the first President and General Secretary, respectively. During the last 45 years the posts of President / Secretary have been held by veteran trade union leaders like Samar Mukherjee, E.Balanandan, M.K.Pandhe, Chittabrata Majumdar and Mohd. Amin. The present President is Com. A.K.Padmanabhan and General Secretary  Com. Tapan Sen. All these  leaders were / are  top leaders of the  CPI(M).

I feel honoured to remember that I could meet all these leaders, get their guidance in the union activities and also had/have  a person to person relation, except Com. P.Ramamoorthy, with whom I have met only a few times at the time of All India Conventions held at New Delhi.

CITU has taken the initiative for uniting the working class and bringing all the 11 Central Trade Unions in India together on the demands of the workers and to fight joint struggles. The latest is the call of the CTUs for a one day general strike on 2nd September 2015.

On this 45th anniversary of the CITU, let us pledge to continue the struggles for the emancipation of the toiling masses and for a better world for the working class.

National Convention of Workers today at New Delhi

26-05-2015, National convention

The National Convention of Workers, called by the 11 Central Trade Unions, is being held at Mavlankar Hall, New Delhi, today, 26th May 2015. The Labour Minister stated two days back that the ‘strike on 26th May’ is not warranted. He did not even think about, whether it was strike or convention.

Anyhow, this Convention being participated by hundreds of trade union workers from all over the country and steered by the 11 Central Trade Unions are going to take decision for industrial action, most probably a strike. The government has so far not taken action on any of the 10 point important demands, that the unions have been raising for the last 4-5 years.

The insensitive government should be made to understand the Indian work force will not tolerate such humiliation and ignoring.

Towards a successful National Convention! Let important decisions be taken for forward march of the working class!
