BSNL should pay wage and wage arrears to Contract workers.

19 Thursday Mar 2020

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in AIBDPA - BSNL DOT Pensioners, BSNLCCWF - Casual and Contract workers, BSNLEU

Contract workers engaged in BSNL are not paid wages for about one year. They are lowest paid workers and manage their needs by the wages they receive. About 10 comrades have committed suicide unable to face the agony of their families without food. The education of their children are discontinued. The situation is very pathetic.

To a question in the Parliament, Minister for Communications, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad had stated that the contract workers are not employees of BSNL and are engaged by contractors. He added that contractors have been paid money. This is completely wrong. Contract workers are doing the work of BSNL and BSNL is paying the wages through contractors. Hence the responsibility of payment of wages is with BSNL. The contractors are contradicting the statement of the Minister that they have been paid by BSNL.

The central govt and BSNL who have already engaged the contract worker through contractor and had got the work done for the last one year have also got the responsibility to pay them.

BSNL has assured  the Unions/Associations that their salary arrears of one month will be paid by 31st March 2020. What about contract workers?

BSNL and Govt should ensure payment of the contract workers also by 31st March with out fail.

BSNL adds more customers than Jio in December, 2019.

Ever since entering into the telecom market in September, 2016, Reliance Jio has been adding the maximum number of customers every month. However, in December, 2019, BSNL has beaten Reliance Jio. BSNL has added 4,27,089 customers in December, 2019, while Reliance Jio has added only 82,000 new customers. Vodafone has lost a whopping 35 lakh of it’s existing customers and Airtel has lost 11,000 customers, during the same period. This is the impact of all the private companies raising their tariff by 40% in December, 2019. BSNL has not raised it’s tariffs.

The entire BSNL fraternity is extremely sad to hear the tragic news of the suicide of Com. Ramesh Kumar Sondhiya, Asst. Telecom Technician, Jabalpur on 12th February. He was only 37 years old.  It is understood that he took the extreme step due to non-receipt of salary for the last two and half months and unable to cope up with the stress and financial difficulty. Already 8 BSNL contract workers have committed suicide due to non-receipt of wages for several months. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

We demand the government and BSNL to immediately pay the salaries of the employees and the wages of the contract workers. The authorities are fully responsible for these tragic deaths.

-78569 –
It is not a mere number.
It is a harsh reality, the number of BSNL employees who were compelled to take VRS, by threat of transfer, reduction in retirement age, 12 hours work, no salary and a sugar coated offer with many pitfalls.

The VRS offer with threats was a double edged weapon – to reduce manpower thus weakening service leading to privatisation and also deny full eligible pension to the VRS optees by not allowing them retirement on superannuation. Govt is expected to save lakhs of crores of rupees through reduced pension.

But AUAB / BSNLEU and All India BSNL DOT Pensioners Association are there to defend BSNL and the VRS pensioners.

AUAB/BSNLEU have already given excellent suggestions to improve BSNL and make it profitable.

AIBDPA has met top officers of DOT to ensure that Pension is paid to all the
78569 VRS retirees by 29th February itself. In case, all these cases could not be completed in time, then at least provisional pension should be paid, which suggestion was accepted by DOT.

There are many pitfalls in VRS. AIBDPA, the biggest pensioners organisation in BSNL is committed to safeguard the interests of all BSNL DOT pensioners including VRS pensioners.

AIBDPA is already on the struggle path. On Pension Revision issue it is approaching all M.P.s in the country to take up the matter with Prime Minister. Already more than 30 M.P.s have been met, who assured to take the matter with govt. Tens of thousands of signatures are being collected in Memorandum to be submitted to Prime Minister. Thousands will participate in Hunger Strike in front of CCAs on 12 February.

Tens of thousands of BSNL DOT pensioners will March to Parliament on 12 March on these demands.

AIBDPA welcomes all VRS retirees to its fold to unite and fight for the demands of pensioners.

Richest 1% Indians hold 4 times more wealth than bottom 70%.
The Oxfam International has released it’s report on 20th January, 2020, in the sideline of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos. This time the title of the report was “Time to Care”.

The report stated “Economic inequality is out of control. In 2019, the world’s billionaires, only 2,153 people, had more wealth than 4.6 billion people.”

It further mentioned that India’s richest 1% hold more than four times the wealth held by 953 million people who make up for the bottom 70% of the country’s population. Regarding India, Oxfam further said that the combined total wealth of 63 Indian billionaires i.e., Mukesh Ambani, Azim Premji, Sunil Mittal etc., is higher than the total Union Budget of India for the fiscal year 2018-19 which was at Rs.24,42,200 crore. Supreme Court rejects the appeal of Vodafone Idea, Airtel and Tata Teleservices on the AGR issue.
The Supreme Court rejected yesterday, the petitions of Vodafone Idea, Airtel and Tata Teleservices, for a review of the judgement of the Apex Court delivered on 24.10.2019. By this judgement, the Supreme Court widened the definition of the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), based on which licence fee and spectrum usage charges are being calculated. As a result of this judgement, Vodafone Idea, Airtel and Tata Teleservices have to pay Rs.53,000 crore, Rs.35,000 crore and Rs.19,000 crore respectively, more to the government. Vodafone Idea has already announced that it would shut down it’s operations in India, if it did not get relief from the Supreme Court judgement.
