WFTU Support to the National General Strike in India on September 2nd 2015

The WFTU has issued the following statement on 03 Aug 2015:
The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) that represents more than 92 million workers all over the world expresses its strong solidarity with our class brothers and sisters of India, who prepare a National General Strike for September 2nd.

During the last years India has met great financial rise. It is member of BRICS, has nuclear arsenal and space program. But this financial boom is not a benefit for most of the one billion people of India. Skyscrapers are built next to the slums. Extreme wealth is gathered next to starving people. While the rich become richer, the wretched are once more the victims. The growth of the capitalist economy is always based on the escalation of the exploitation of the working class. Today that India and its bourgeois political forces take pride on the economic and military strength of the Indian Nation; the vast majority of the people live the contradiction of pauperization.

In these conditions the struggle and the demands of the Trade Union movement of India is just. The WFTU affiliates in India have been preparing this strike for months, showing the determination and the will of the class forces to mobilize the great force of the working people. The success of the National General Strike in India, on September 2nd will be a success for the working class of the world.

Especially this year, when the WFTU celebrates its 70th Year Anniversary, we would like to highlight the historic contribution of the class trade union movement of India to the World Federation since its foundation. It is a fact that without the struggles and the contribution of the trade union movement of India, the international class trade union movement would not be the same.

The WFTU expresses its internationalist support and solidarity to the struggle of its Indian brothers and calls all trade union organizations of WFTU to stand in solidarity with the National Strike of the Indian working class.

Long Live International Solidarity! Long Live the class trade union movement of India! All success to the National General Strike of September 2nd!

New Attempt to Silence the Action of the Class Trade Unions in Greece

Greece, PAME, TUI(P andR), WFTU

A report from TUI(P and T), WFTU, on the New Attempt to Silence the Action of the Class Trade Unions in Greece is reproduced below:

The Executive Secretariat of PAME denounces the Mayor and the Municipal Authorities of
Kalamata (city in the Southern Greece) for demanding PAME to pay a fine of almost 1000€!
The infringement they accuse PAME of, is “creating pollution by using banners” to call to
demonstrations against the new, brutal Memorandum of SYRIZA and the anti workers’
measures that destroy our lives!
The absolute silence they demand; the attempts to create obstacles in people’s mobilization
only prove that they are with the side of the capitalists.
PAME, its forces, are not intimidated, are not subjugated! Steadfast, militantly they stand
against the capital, the EU and their servants in every level. Central, regional or municipal.
We return your fine back at you! Send it to the capitalists and the Government!
We call the working class of Kalamata, the self employed, the small farmers and especially the
youth, in spite of our differences, to rally with PAME, the social alliance and strengthen it. To
strengthen our common action against those who want to destroy us, the European Union, the
monopolies, their political parties, and their servants, like the Municipal Authorities of Kalamata.
They support the old and New Memoranda, the anti workers policies, the extreme taxation to
the people. They support our pauperization with wage cuts, pension cuts, rise of retirement age
to 67 years, to 72.
We call you to demand the recover of our losses, our contemporary needs, to strengthen
solidarity. No one to be alone in the crisis
THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARIAT PAME

It is reported that the UK  TATA Steel Workers may defer the proposed strike in view of the discussions held between the unions and the management and the proposed settlement. However, since, strike ballot has been taken and the vast majority supported the strike, another ballot may be required for deferring the strike considering the discussion and proposed settlement.

60% of global workers are part-time, contract workers

Contract, CTU, exploitation, ILO

The capitalist way of converting full time work in to contract, casual and part-time has been on the increase. According to a report of the ‘World Employment and Social Outlook 2015’, a ILO body,  more than 60% of the global work force are on short term contracts, informal jobs without any contract, self employed or in unpaid family jobs.

In India, both the earlier UPA Government and the present NDA government are also in the same  tract. Almost 90% of the workers are in unorganised sector and the contract system is increasing instead of regular jobs in India. These workers are maximum exploited and even the existing labour laws are violated in their case.

The Central trade Unions have demanded that the contract workers should be paid a minimum wage of Rs. 15,000 a month. But the government has so far not accepted the same. It has got sufficient funds to waive taxes and penalties to the corporates coming to lakhs  of crores of rupees. But in the case of the contract workers, they are silent. Of course, this is the government of the rich, for the rich and by the rich.

Fidel Castro

Though 88 and resting,  Fidel Castro has a lot to say. It is correct; the Revolutionary Leader is still an inspiration for the entire world, which waits to hear him. A report about his meeting with French President Francois Hollande who called upon him at Havana, Cuba.

Havana, May 12 : French President Francois Hollande called today for an end to the US embargo on Cuba, as he met with Fidel Castro during the first visit by a Western leader since  Washington and Havana moved to restore ties.

Hollande said France will do whatever possible to see that “the measures that have so badly  harmed Cuba’s development can finally be lifted” ahead of meetings with Fidel and his younger brother Raul Castro, the duo who have ruled Cuba since its 1959 revolution.

Hollande met first with a smiling Fidel, the iconic 88-year-old father of the revolution, who he said still “had a lot to say”. Castro wore a black and white sweat suit over a checked shirt in contrast to the military fatigues that were his trademark before he yielded power to his younger brother in 2006.

Hollande called Fidel a figure of historic stature.

It was an unusual sight in the New York and other major cities of US. Thousands of low paid workers in fast food, airport, construction, child care educational institutions etc. participated in protest demonstrations demanding increase in minimum wage, pointing out that the present wages are completely insufficient.

At present the minimum wage is $ 8.75 in an hour. The workers are demanding $ 15 an hour to escape from poverty. The authorities are proposing to increase the minimum wage to $ 9, which is rejected by the workers.
