53 top historians in the country including Professors Romila Thapar (New Delhi), Irfan Habib (Aligarh Muslim University), M.G.S.Narayanan (Kozhikode),K.N.Panikkar (Thiruvananthapuram), have expressed their extreme unhappiness at the increasing intolerance in the country and requested for an atmosphere allowing free expression of thought.

This is a strong indictment of the communal tension being created and against the murders of intellectuals who expressed their opinions on various issues, which the fundamentalists could not digest.

More and more such condemnations  against the intolerance in the country are required.

Nepal, Women President

A Communist leader who has long campaigned for women’s rights was elected on Wednesday as Nepal’s first female President.

Bidhya Devi Bhandari of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist received 327 votes against her opponent’s 214 in the Parliament on Wednesday, Parliament Speaker Onsari Gharti announced.

Ceremonial head

The President is the ceremonial head in Nepal while the Prime Minister is the nation’s leader.

Ms. Bhandari (54) is the deputy leader of the party led by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who was elected earlier this month and leads a coalition government. The new Constitution adopted last month required Nepal to name a new President.

Ms. Bhandari is an active campaigner for women’s rights in Nepal and was among the politicians who campaigned for ensuring women’s rights in the new Constitution. The document says one-third of the members in parliament have to be women and either the President or Vice-President must be a woman.

Leading poitical figure

The new President has been a leading political figure since her husband Madan Bhandari, who was then leader of the party, was killed in a still unsolved car accident in 1993.

She also led many demonstrations against the then King Gyanendra in 2006 that finally ended his authoritarian rule and restored democracy.(AP)

Stop Moral Policing – CPI(M)

CPI(M), No moral policing

New Delhi Octber 28 :The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), now in session at Delhi, has  issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the Hindutva elements who sought to stir up trouble with the allegation of “beef” being served in the canteen at Kerala House in New Delhi.  Firm action should be taken against them.

The CPI(M) condemns the raid conducted by Delhi Police at the Kerala House on the pretext of investigating whether beef was being served in the canteen.  Everybody is aware that buffalo meat is allowed legally to be sold in Delhi and any preparation of such meat is not an illegality.

This raid conducted by the Delhi Police is, therefore, illegal.  The Delhi Police is directly administered by the Union Home Minister. This comes in the background of a nationwide campaign unleashed by the RSS patronized by the Central Government led by Prime Minister Modi against alleged consumption of beef in various parts of the country.  This is only a pretext to sharpen communal polarization across the country through which the BJP seeks to  gain politically and electorally.

Initially the Kerala state government authorities appeared to have succumbed to this illegal pressure by the Delhi Police and removed beef preparations from the menu of the Kerala House canteen.  This is highly deplorable.

This act by the Delhi Police is also a clear violation of the federal structure of the Indian Constitution and infringes upon the rights of the state governments on their property in the national capital.

This action by the Delhi Police is unacceptable.  Government of Delhi must institute a proper probe into this incident  and strict  action must follow against those responsible

Iraq attack mistake, Tony Blair

At last, after many years, the confession has come out from Tony Blair, former UK Prime Minister who ordered  attack on Iraq to oust Saddam Hussain.

Tony Blair told yesterday that the attack on Iraq was a mistake. It has resulted in ISIS growth and terrorism. Saddam Hussain was less bad than ISIS, he said.

Some people realise their mistakes very late after all the damages have been done. Wisdom come late is not wisdom at all.

Bonus ceiling increased

The Cabinet has decided to double the wage ceiling for calculating bonus to Rs 7,000 per month for factory workers and establishments with 20 or more workers.

“The Payment of Bonus (Amendment) Bill, 2015 to enhance the monthly bonus calculation ceiling to Rs 7,000 per month from existing Rs 3,500 was approved by Union Cabinet here,” a source said after the Cabinet meeting.

The eligibility ceiling for grant of bonus also will be increased from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 21,000. This amendment will be effective from 1st April 2015.

This amendment in the Act to increase wage ceiling and bonus calculation ceiling was one of assurances given by the Centre after 10 central trade unions went on a historic one-day strike on September 2.

‘India survived because of its tolerance and by accepting dissent and differences’ – President of India

‘A large number of languages, 1600 dialects and several religions exist in India. We have a Constitution that accommodates all these differences.’ ‘Indian civilization had survived for 5,000 years chiefly because of its tolerance and by accepting dissent and differences’. The statement of the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, is most relevant when acts of intolerance and inhuman attacks are being perpetrated by the Hindu fundamentalists.

A report by PTI is  given below about the massive bribery by  MNC Wal-Mart in India. Thousands of people have been bribed to get customs clearing etc.  It is an international scandal. How to stop corruption and bribery? Will the Mody Government take action?

“New York, Oct 19 : A US government investigation is said to have found evidence of Wal-Mart Stores Inc allegedly paying thousands of small bribes to Indian officials to get customs clearances and obtain real-estate permits, the Wall Street Journal reported today.

Vast majority of payments were below USD 200 (about Rs 13,000 at current exchange rate) and some were as low as USD 5(Rs 330) but together totalled millions of dollars.

The three-year federal probe “found evidence of bribery in India, centring on widespread but relatively small payments made to local officials there”, the Journal reported citing persons it didn’t identify.

“Much of the suspected bribery investigators unearthed in India involves thousands of small payments to low-level local officials to help move goods through customs or obtain real-estate permits.

“The vast majority of the suspicious payments were lessthan USD 200, and some were as low as USD 5,” it said. “But when added together they totalled millions of dollars.”

The world’s largest retailer entered India in 2007through a supermarket joint venture with Bharti Enterprisesbut split up in 2013. Since then, it is mostly focused onwholesale business.

Wall Street Journal said investigators found similar payments in Mexico, but “the bulk of such activity seemed to be in India”. (PTI)
