Modi Government is determined to finish the PSUs. The latest is that it has decided to close 5 PSUs viz. HMT Watch, HMT Chinar Watch, HMT Bearing, Thungabhadra Steel and Hindustan Cables. It is expected by the government to get Rs. 22,000 crore from the sale, while the cost, including VRS etc. will be around Rs. 1,400 crore.
These companies are situated in the heart of the cities, have a lot of land and building assets in addition to the infrastructure. Since these are treated as sick companies, the sale will be done just like distress sale, meaning that the companies may be handed over for a meagre price compared to its assets as has been sold in the earlier NDA regime companies like VSNL, Centaur Hotel and others.
how can we defend the govt from ruining our BSNL sir??
We have to unitedly fight the government’s anti- PSU, anti- BSNL policy and also improve the service to the customers.
Sir…CSCs which are direct point of contacts for customers needs young energy. I personally observed about to retire staff in many cscs. They don’t know min. terminology about smart phones. How they can serve customers? One rule should be passed by co. to post only under 40 staff at csc’s. In private telcos outlets young n fresh faces are welcoming customer whereas our CSC’s are filled with grand father n mothers.. Younger staff is req. at CSC’s not on field.
Your suggestion is well taken. That is why the union has been demanding for fresh recruitment. More than 1,50,000 workers have retired in BSNL since 20000, but only about 30, 000 has been recruited, that too mainly in executives and not in the non-executives, who are mainly interacting with the subscribers. Fresh recruitment should be a main demand of the workers. Though there is restriction in new appointment, even in central governments and other PSUs, a minimum recruitment is made through which fresh blood is there.
But at the same time, you can not dismiss the services of the experienced officials. The country itself is being run by people, whose average age is more than 60 years. Even in the army, where high physical capacity requirement is there, there are large number of official above the age of 50. Even in the agriculture, where physical capacity is most required, person with 60 or more years are working. The longevity has increased.
Of course, these comrades should be given training and retraining and utilised at the appropriate places. This is the point in which the management has completely failed. If the ordinary housewife or the hawker or the fisherman can use the latest gadgets and understand things, what is the problem with the people who were working in the system for more than 25-30 years. They should be given training and they will be able to do their work perfectly well.
Sir…but I think that enthusiasm is missing in many.We are in service sector which requires customer delight. Agriculture, defence, politics these sectors require minimal customer interaction. Where as telecom sector is not like that. There is a lot of difference if customer faces a 20 yrs old person vs 50 yrs old. That you can check by visiting our CSC and Vodafone outlet personally. Many young jtos n ttas are working in field joining cables n ofcs. If we divert them to cscs by replacing exp. staff in filed better customer service is possible.
don’t you think closure of these companies benefit the employees since they are going to get vrs on 2007 pay scales. As on now they are not getting salary regularly.sick psus are paid salary once in 6 months that too on 1997 pay scale which is 50% less than 2007 pay scales.
so closure of sick psus are beneficial to employees,
are you awre iti employees are not paid salary from January onwards..
at least bsnl employees are getting regular salary at 2007 payscale..
pl fight for regular salary and wage revision for sick psus otherwise demand closure of sick psus with good vrs package.
revival package is a waste of money and time both for govt and employees.
Really a good comment comrade. If employees are not getting regular pay with pay revision then its better to have golden handshake.
Many of these PSUs were profitable and the government was getting profit, taxes and dividend of lakhs of crore rupees annually from the PSUs. When there is loss, it is the government’s duty to assist the PSUs. The salary of the workers in the PSUs should be paid by the government and the PSUs made profitable.
Revival of PSUs is the requirement which benefit the PSU/Government as well as the workers. These companies became mainly due to the change in the policy of the government. They can be revived, but the governments do not want it, since they are controlled by the big corporates, both Indian and foreign and big business. The benefits, the workers have got through sustained struggles are being taken away. The nation’s assets are being gifted for less than one-fourth of their value. Yhe self-sufficiency of the country is being compromised. The VRS package is always much less than what a person would get, if he is working. While the government assist the corporate by reducing their taxes, waiving taxes and penalties, giving land at nominal rates ( for example Re. one for an acre etc.), why it is not giving funds for the sick PSUs to improve and face the competition of the private companies? While in the UDF/Congress rule in Kerala, most of the PSUs became sick, in the next rule of CPI(M)/LDF, almost all these PSUs became profitable. Again in the next UDF rule, they became loss-making. PSUs, especially PSU Banks , have kept India safe from the 2007-08 recession, whcih even the government agreed. But not the government is trying even to finish the PSU Banks. It is a question of the correct and wrong policy. Of course, the existing workers have to save themselves.
when you are running business, you require young capable prople,to make it profitable.govt can be run by old people.there is no profitability criteria for govt.all govt employees are paid regularly whether it is run efficiently or not.
where as psu employees are not getting salary if the business is in loss.
if psus have to be revived the average age should be brought down to 32 like other private companies.
Generally it is appropriate that there are more young persons. But it is not so in practice. There are a lot of PSUs which are in profit and improved market share. What about the LIC, Public sector banks, BHEL, HAL, ONGC, IOC and dozens of profitable PSUs. Their market shares also are high. Private companies and banks could not match with them. While LIC has got more than 72% market share and 99% satisfaction level, the private companies are below and their satisfaction level is dismal. All these PSUs are having large number of people above 50 years. BSNL is in loss, due to the government policy which stopped purchase of equipment, putting the top management on deputation instead of absorption, non-recruitment, not giving training and re-training, favouritism to private companies, allowing the private companies to violate rules and regulations and high level corruption as in the case Ministers Sukhram, Dayanidhi maran, Raja and other. The workers can not be blamed for all these. In addition the top management has failed to steer the company in the right direction. But all these can be changed and BSNL will become profitable. Today or tomorrow it is going to happen.
if you analyse where psus are making profit in a competitive atmosphere,it is only in financial sectors like banks and insurance.it is because people want to entrust their money with govt owned entities for safety purpose.so the business is growing for lic and psu banks.
bhel is in trouble due to chinese competition and it will follow suit with bsnl in another 3 years time.
if your intention is to make bsnl profitable, then why you are not implementing sam pitroda report on bsnl revival
Sam Pitroda report is intended to quickly privatise BSNL and we are opposed to it.
Sir, you have rightly pointed out that many CPSU are doing good but i.e. LIC has a very different work culture with far better average age of employees. Other CPSUs like BHEL, HAL, ONGC and IOC have bit more monopoly business than us(BSNL) and again they have better employee average age than us(BSNL).
