Shame to continued Governments – India leads world in the number of hungry people

Tags

,

It is really a shame on the Government and the people of India. India now leads in the maximum number of hungry people in the world. As per the report of the State of Food Security in the World 2015, India has 194.6 million people who are in the hunger list. Almost every one out of four is undernourished.

Earlier it was China, having more hungry people. But it has now diminished sharply. Even Nepal and Bangladesh has reduced the hungry people. But in India, the reduction has been nominal. Out of 172 countries, India ranks first in poverty and hunger.

The neo-liberal policies being practiced by the UPA and NDA governments, have created more and more billionaires and trillionaires. At the same time more people have become poor and poorer.

Prime Minister Mr. Modiji, is ‘Achche Din’ only for the rich and corporates. What about the poor people who gave vote for you for the promised ‘Achche Din’?

ITDC Hotels to be handed over to private, by sale or by lease – Government proposal

Tags

,

Government is on the path of disposing of its famous ITDC Hotels one after another. It is proposing to come out of the Hotel business. Argument of the government is that running hotels is not he business of the government. ‘Business is not the business of government’ was the slogan of the Bajpayee Government which sold ITDC hotels like Mumbai Centaur Hotel, near the Airport, for paltry sum. How the employees in the Centaur Hotel suffered is a well known fact. Women were retrenched, followed by SC/ST and then hire and fire. That will be the same course now also.

The plea of the government is that most of these hotels are in loss. Instead of making them in to profitable units, the government wants to hand them over to private, for maximising their profits. These hotels are situated in centre locations. The proposal is either to lease them for long period (say 30 Years) or sell them cheap.

The hotels proposed for lease/privatisation are Hotel Jaipur Ashok, Jammu Ashok, Kalinga Ashok, Lalitha mahal Palace Hotel, Mysuru, Hotel Bharatpur, Pondicherry Ashok, Ranchi Ashok etc.

The proposal to sell these icon hotels should be opposed and defeated by the democratic forces and political parties. The unions in these establishments should initiate the protest.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru – The First Prime Minister of India

Tags

51 years have passed by 27th May 2015 after the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. As the First Prime Minster of India, he had to face many critical issues concerning the governance, the political legacy, international connections and so on. Some times it was felt that he was a socialist, but some other time he was almost a dictator. It was only natural since he was almost the undisputed leader.

The latest disclosure that he kept an intelligence watch on Subhas Chandra Bose and  his family etc. has opened a new debate on his role.

Although not connected with the assessment of Nehru or his government, I may narrate a small incident, when I could meet Prime Minister Nehru. He was visiting Tellicherry and a public meeting was arranged. It was in 1956 or ’57.  The security, black cats, Z category etc. were not at that time. I was working as a Teacher. I wanted to meet Nehru and get his autograph since I used collect such autographs. I tried to go near him, but the party leaders were not allowing. I had a small camera with me. (It was very rare for people to have camera during those periods. This was a camera gifted to me by a German pen friend. ) I pretended to be a press person and with the camera started taking photos. This way I could go near Nehru and get his autograph. When asked for the autograph he signed in the book smilingly.

There is no doubt that Jawaharlal Nehru was a charming personality. Probably, he was the best person to lead the country at that time. We can leave it to the historians to assess the same.

However ” Chacha Nehru” was a hero of the children. At the same time we had the unforgettable experience of the 1960 strike which was suppressed by the Prime Minister calling it “Civil Rebellion” and using all the brute powers of  the government. That also is part of history.

My respectful homage to Jawaharlal Nehru on his 51st death anniversary.
