The dark memories of draconian ‘National Emergency’

The dark memories of the draconian ‘National Emergency’ is still not forgotten. It was on 25th June 1975 that the President of India promulgated the ‘National Emergency’ at the instance of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In fact the declaration was not because there was an emergency situation in the country, but only because there was a danger to the continuance of the Indira Gandhi government after the Supreme Court verdict nullifying her election. It was a fake emergency imposed upon the people to save Indian National Congress and Indira Gandhi.

The 1974 Railway Strike and various agitation by the workers, the strong protest against the anti-people decisions of the government followed by the Supreme Court verdict created a situation, where the ruling party was not in a position to digest. The panacea to pass over the crisis was the declaration of emergency. All political opponents were arrested and put in jail arbitrarily. Trade Union leaders were also jailed. The newspapers were silenced. They could not print any criticism of the government. Functioning of political parties and democratic institutions were literally prohibited. The police and the government machinery were utilised to crush any opposition to the ruling party and the government. It was dictatorship.

Leaders of central/state government employees’ unions were also jailed. It was difficult even to hold union meetings. There were spies, CBI, CID etc. every where to report any objection to the emergency. Student leaders were arrested and jailed. NFPTE also had to face a lot of victimisation.

The entire opposition parties united to fight against the National Emergency. Thinking that the entire opposition was derailed, Indira Gandhi declared General election in 1977 after about two years of emergency. But the government was mistaken. The people who were suffering under emergency ensured that the Congress is defeated. It was one of utter defeat for the Congress. The Janatha government came in to power. The dark days were over.

Though 43 years are over, the dark period is not forgotten. There are many indications that the actions of the present government is tilting towards authoritarianism and fascist tendencies. The entire people should ensure that the ‘Emergency’ is not repeated.

Arvind Subramaniam, Chief Economic Advisor, resigned –

Chief Economic Advisor to the Government, Arvind Subramaniam has resigned from his post, before completion of his contract period. Another economist, Arvind Panagaria, had resigned from the NITI Ayog post a few months earlier.

What is happening? Why these top level economists are resigning their posts one after another? The Government and the Prime Minister should tell the public what is wrong? Of course, the economy and growth is coming down.

Formation of a Company by Kerala for payment of social welfare pensions.

This will be 100% owned by the government. All those who are above the age of 60 are paid welfare pension of rs. 1,100 by the government. Many other pensions are also there. The funds will be given to the company by the state government and it will pay the pension monthly to the concerned. This is much hailed by the pensioners.

Congratulations to the Kerala Government for streamlining the pension payment.

Central Government should start construction of Railway Coach Factory at Kanjikode, Palakkad

The long pending demand of the Kerala for the construction of a Railway Coach Factory was approved by the Central government and more than 230 acres of land was acquired for the purpose by the state government in 2012 itself. The government decided for Coach Factories at the same time, one at Rae Bareilly in UP and one at Kanjikode, Palakkad in Kerala. The former one has already been constructed and started functioning, but the latter is completely ignored. Now, the Railway Minister stated a few days back that there is no requirement for another factory, which was corrected by himself later stating that the government has taken no decision to close the project, due to strong criticism.

The stand of the central government is nothing but discrimination against Kerala for political reasons. The reason for not proceeding with the project was stated that the state government is not keen and is delaying the acquisition of land for the project. It is a fact that the required land of 230 acre was already acquired and ready for construction. The Minister’s lie was exposed.

The Railways require coaches, the land is acquired and the Kerala Chief Minister and M.P.s have asked for starting the project.

The centre should take immediate action to construct the railway Coach Factory at Kanjikode, Palakkad, Kerala.

No disinvestment or sale of Air India now.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has stated that Air India sale/ disinvestment will not take place now as no corporate has come forward for the same. Well and good. The government decision to disinvest and sell this government carrier is fully wrong and unjustified. The Government should help it and ensure its continued existence as a central government PSU.

Nirav Modi has 6 Passports – What about other Indian Corporate bosses

It is now revealed that Nirav Modi, the diamond merchant, who cheated the Punjab National Bank more than $ two billion and fled the country, is having at least six passports. As per rules, one is expected to have only one passport.  How Nirav Modi got six? who gave it? All these need to be enquired.

It may not be an exceptional case. What about Mallya? How many passports he is having? What about other Indian Corporate bosses? There is no doubt that such persons also will have illegal passports.

In India, money can buy many things, including passports.

Let the government order an inquiry, in the present known circumstances, about the passports of the corporates and the big business. The result will be interesting and will point to the rotten state of affairs in connection with the corporate bosses. It will also help stopping persons like Mallya and Nirav Modi escaping from the country after cheating the nation and the people.

90 years since birth of Che Guevara – WFTU statement

WORLD FEDERATION OF TRADE UNIONS
Athens, Greece – 14 June 2018
WFTU Statement on the 90 years since the birth of Che
“People may die but never do their ideas” Today, June 14, 2018, is the 90th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest
revolutionaries of the twentieth century, Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known
throughout the Latin American continent as “Che”. For the big class-oriented family of the WFTU, the figure of Che remains a guide for
the struggles of the present and the future. Although the US imperialists managed to
kill him, they will never succeed, no matter how hard they try, to sully his pioneering
action, his immense contribution in the struggle against capitalism and its lackeys. For us, for all the simple and class-oriented unionists, the emblematic figure and the
ideas of Che will never lose their validity and vigor. Che was a revolutionary who
fought imperialism with the weapon at hand and never gave up; and this can not be
erased by the falsifiers of history. At this very moment when imperialists prepare new wars for the distribution of natural
resources, waves of refugees are uprooted by imperialist aggression and thousands
of workers are being sacrificed on the altar of capital gains, the path that Che traced
is an example to follow. Because imperialism has not died yet. Because there are
thousands of militants of the WFTU throughout the world who continue to fight
against the domination of capital and keep alive the spark and hope for a new world, without exploitation of man by man. For the WFTU, the words of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro are the wish that we
share with all our class brothers and sisters throughout the world: “If we want to express how we want our children to be, we must say: WE WANT
THEM TO BE LIKE CHE!
