Why Lunch hour demonstration on 10th January by BSNL Workers?

09 Monday Jan 2012

The lunch hour demonstration called by the Joint Action Committee of BSNL Associations/Unions on 10th January 2012 is for focussing on two major demands and pressurising the DOT and Government of India to reimburse the BWA Spectrum charges of more than Rs. 8000 to BSNL and also to take stringent action against the private companies who has violated the 3G spectrum allocation conditions and illegally started providing 3G services in circles where they don’t have allocation.  The Government /DOT has to take immediate action.

The JAC calls upon all the BSNL workers to make the Lunch Hour Demonstration a grand success by maximum participation.

African National Congress celebrates 100 years of glory

09 Monday Jan 2012

African National Congress (ANC), the present ruling party of South Africa, is celebrating its 100 years of existence in a very grand way. ANC was formed at Bloemfontein , with the aim of fighting for the independence of the country from the British imperialists. It got inspiration from the non-violence struggle launched by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, when he was practising in South Africa. It is coincidal that Gandhiji returned to India on this day (9th January) in  1915.

The ANC  turned to armed struggle as part of the independence struggle by 1960s. Nelson Mandela, the unquestioned leader of the ANC and other top leaders were arrested and kept in jail for decades and was released only after strong international pressure and other compulsions. SA got independence in 1994.

The leaders of the African National Congress like Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo and others sacrificed their entire lives for the freedom of their country. On the celebration of the 100th years of formation of ANC, I convey my Best Wishes to the people of South Africa!

The Unity of the Seven Sisters of North East

07 Saturday Jan 2012

The Circle Conferences of Assam, North East I and North East II circles are being held together at Silchar (Assam) from 6th to 8th January 2012. This Joint Conference is a long tradition of the North East Circles. Not only telecom unions but also Postal unions together, the Joint Conferences were being held till a few years back. Now, the Postal Unions are holding separately. Earlier there was only one circle called North East Circle including the present Assam, NE I & NE II circles. Later it was bifurcated  to Assam and North East. Again  North East was divided in to NE I & NE II. These three circles represent the seven states of North East Region viz. Assam (Assam Circle) Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram (NE I) and Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh (NE II), which are called the seven sisters of North East.  The Union has demanded the management to bifurcate NE I and NE II again so that each state will have its own circle just as in other states. But the management did not agree. There will be much more development if these states are having their own telecom circles. One of the reasons for the backwardness of telecom services in NE I and NE II is this. To go from one state to another , most of these states have to go through Assam and it es a lot of time.

These three circles are the strong holds of BSNLEU. In the first verification BSNLEU got  huge majority in all these circles, which is the position even now. While NFTE BSNL got 124 votes out of 5992 votes in Assam, In North EasT I, it got 11 out of 2127 and  in NE II it got 4 out of 1696.

All these circles are very systematic and have a strong tradition of democratic functioning. My Hearty Greetings to their Joint Coircle Conference!

2G Scam – SC irked at laxity in enquiry

06 Friday Jan 2012

The Supreme Court expressed its displeasure in the lagging enquiry on the 2G Scam and issued notices to the DOT, CBI and Enforcement Directorate asking them to reply to the allegations of laxity in the enquiry before 20th January when the case will be taken for next hearing.  It was hinted by the Counsel for CPIL Shri Prashant Bhushan that Law Minister Salman Khurshid ws interfering in the case.

It is well known to all that the Government which said earlier that there was no loss in the 2G allotment will certainly try to save its face int scam. But the evidences are much against it. Sukh Ram, former telecom Minister, against whom case of corruption was going on  has now been convicted and jail sentence given. What will happen in the present case?

TRAI has asked all the telecom operators to provide web-based systems to attend and settle complaints of the customers. The acute delay at present due to various stages of dealing with the complaints have made the regulator to issue the present directives. This will be a move to improve the customer services.

Don’t sell the PSUs!

05 Thursday Jan 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in Uncategorized

The government is in a desperate move to sell shares of the profitable PSUs. But the market is not ready for the same. Further, even if it is sold, the amount will be less. But the Government is still considering seriously whether the shares of SAIL, NMDC, ONGC, NTPC, Coal India, OIC, MMTC, Neyveli Lignite, NHPC, BHEL and GAIL  are to be sold. The corporates and big business will be only too happy to invest less for more shares.

Can we allow the government to sell the family silver and destroy the PSUs? Certainly NOT!

36% cut in salary, still the Singapore PM is one of the highest paid official in the world !

05 Thursday Jan 2012

There is no limit to the salaries of corporates and politicians through out the world. For example even after  a 36% cut in the salary, the Singapore Prime Minister will be one of the best paid official in the world. Even after the cut, his salary will be $ 1.69 million! It is more than 4 times that of US President Barrack Obama, who gets a huge $ 400,000 a year.

How the pay cut has come all of a sudden? There was so much noise  and resentment against the high salary of the ministers, including the Prime Minister and it was assured during the last election that the salaries will be cut. Hence the present decision.

What about the corporates all over the world? It is the same thing. We know how much the Ambanis, Tatas and others get. But in their own companies, what they are paying to the lowest category of workmen? Very low. This long divide in all spheres have to be narrowed down. Then only the toiling masses will get some relief. This discrimination in the income should go.

Cabinet failed to take decision on disinvestment proposal due to internal opposition

04 Wednesday Jan 2012

Amid inter-ministerial differences, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday deferred a decision on proposal of Disinvestment Department to raise Rs. 40,000 crore from divestment of PSUs through buyback and other modes. “The buyback proposal came up for discussion but decision on the proposal has been deferred,” sources said. The Department of Disinvestment (DoD), which has identified about two-dozen cash rich public sector enterprises with a total balance of nearly Rs. 2 lakh crore, had sought opinion of respective ministries on disinvestment through the buyback mode. Sources said several ministries, like petroleum and coal, were not in favour of the buyback proposal as the move would have impacted the cash balance of PSUs under them. The companies which have been identified by the government for stake sale include SAIL, NMDC, ONGC, NTPC, Coal India, Oil India, MMTC, Neyveli Lignite, NHPC, BHEL and GAIL. As the market conditions are not conducive for disinvestment through public offer route, the DoD has been planning to raise funds through other methods like, buyback and cross holding among PSUs. Under the buyback mode, the government can raise money by selling its equity in the company to the PSU itself. In order to facilitate the disinvestment process, the SEBI Board yesterday, relaxed the norms for buyback of shares and dilution of equity by companies. It would help the companies to complete the process of selling shares within days, as against the normal process which can take months. Among other things, the disinvestment department has also suggested promoting cross-holding of equities between CPSEs, which would help the government raise money without diluting its holding in such PSUs.
