Government’s move to privatise Railways

22 Thursday Mar 2012

The controversy about the increase in the railway tariff hike presented by former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi resulted in his removal by the Trinamool Congress and a new Railway Minister Mukul Roy has been appointed. This is clearly a drama created by Trinamool Supremo Mamata. More than this drama, there are serious issues involved in the new Railway Budget. One, of course is the increase in rail tariff, especially in the sleeper and lower classes which are mainly used by the common people. If the new tariffs are analysed in detail, one can see that there is a huge 30% or so increase in the categories mentioned above, while in the A/C and higher classes the increase only between 13% to 20%. Tax the poor and save the rich seems to be the motto of the government.

But more serious issue is the proposal to privatise the Railway services, the largest services in the country. During the last few years, the government has been appointing Committees after committees to reorganise and improve the Railways. These include the Kakodar and Pitroda Committees. Of course Manmohan Singh and Ahluwalia are there to guide and advise what should be in the report of the committee. And hence the present Railway budget proposals are a clever manouvoure for privatisation.

The present Railway Budget is nothing short of a disaster for the country. It should be opposed and defeated.

Number of poor coming down according to Govt. Report – Opposition slams the govt. fogures.

20 Tuesday Mar 2012

Opposition parties slammed the Planning Commission’s claim that the number of poor in India had come down to 34.47 crore in 2009-10 from 40.72 crore in 2004-2005 in both the Houses of Parliament.

They questioned the new cut-offs (Rs 29 per day, per person in urban areas and Rs 22 in rural areas) for selecting people living below the poverty line.

“They are eliminating the poverty line and bringing in a starvation line. Let the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister spend their life with Rs 29 and Rs 22 per day,” BJP leader, Mr S.S Ahluwalia, said in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The Congress, too, kept itself away from the new cut-off limit. Congress spokesperson, Mr Manish Tiwari, said the need of the hour was honest efforts to “wipe out” poverty from the country than controversy over number of the poor.

Later talking to reporters, Mr Ahluwalia said the Government should bring in a mechanism to find out the actual number of poor. “Children in this country are dying of malnutrition. The Arjun Sengupta Committee had said 80 per cent of the people get less that Rs 20 a day. There are estimates by Saxena and Tendulkar Committees as well. I don’t know from where this Government is getting its data,” Mr Ahluwalia added.

The CPI (M) termed the Plan panel’s poverty estimates as a dishonest attempt to conceal the reality of glaring inequalities and increasing poverty.

“We demand that the Prime Minister should make a categorical statement that these fraudulent poverty measures will not be used to deny poor people of their right to BPL cards or be used as a benchmark for allocating funds to the states or for welfare programmes,” its Polit Bureau said in a statement. Occupy Wall Street Protestors call for strike on 1st May

20 Tuesday Mar 2012

Occupy Wall Street activists on Monday called for supporters to skip work on May 1 to protest against alleged police brutality during 73 arrests in New York during the weekend. Several dozen activists joined members of New York’s City Council for a news conference in Zuccotti Park to complain about police tactics.  May Day is both an ancient rite of spring fertility and, in modern times, a celebration of the international labor movement. It also has been used to protest various issues. It’s impossible to gauge the expected response of the strike.

While the government is trying to suppress the protest, there is a chance that by the end of the winter, there will be once again an increasing of the protests.

AIBDPA Meeting at Coimbatore

18 Sunday Mar 2012

Once again I got the chance to visit Coimbatore, the busy growing city of the south. Local people say Kovai for the town. It is a growing industrial city with a lot of educational and technical institutions. Being almost on the border with Kerala, there are a lot of Keralites here. Most of the people knows Malayalam.

I started from Calicut by the Fast Passenger train at 0810 and reached Kovai at about 1315 hours. Com. Ambujakshan and his team were waiting at the Railway station. After lunch, we went to the AIBDPA circle Executive Committee meeting being held in a nearby auditorium. Com. Mohan Doss, Circle President was presiding. Com. C.K.Narasimhan Circle Secretary presented his report. Many comrades participated in the discussion.

In my address to the CEC, I briefed the house about the issues of the Pensioners, the historic settlement of the Pension revision and the fight for settlement of pension issues. The formation and growth of AIBDPA was reported.

Out of 26 SSAs, except in 5 SSAs, AIBDPA has been formed in all other SSAs. The units are on the growth pact. Tomorrow, there is the District Conference of Coimbatore.

Com. Vamanan, SSA Secretary and his team made all arrangements for the successful conduct of the CEC. My Congratulations!

Occupy Wall Street Movement completes six months – a report

18 Sunday Mar 2012

Protesters chanted and cheered as they marched down Wall Street on Saturday to mark six months since the birth of the Occupy movement. Some of the protesters applauded the Goldman Sachs employee who days ago gave the firm a public drubbing, echoing the movement’s indictment of a financial system demonstrators say is fuelled by reckless greed. “I kind of like to think that the Occupy movement helped him to say, ‘Yeah, I really can’t do this anymore,’” retired librarian Connie Bartusis said of the op-ed piece by former Goldman Sachs manager Greg Smith, who claimed the company regularly foisted failing products on clients as it sought to make more money. Carrying a sign with the words “Regulate Regulate Regulate,” Bartusis said the loss of governmental checks on the financial system helped create the climate of unfettered self-interest described by Mr. Smith in his piece, although Goldman’s leadership suggested he had not portrayed the bank’s culture accurately. “Greed is a very powerful force,” Bartusis said. “That’s what got us in trouble.” On Saturday, six months after the protesters first took over Zuccotti Park near the city’s financial district, protesters gathered there again, drawing slogans in chalk on the pavement and waving flags as they marched through lower Manhattan. With the city’s attention focused on the huge St. Patrick’s Day parade many blocks uptown, the Occupy rally at Zuccotti drew a couple of hundred people a smaller crowd than the demonstrations seen in the city when the movement was at its peak. Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore made an appearance at the park, milling around with protesters. With the barricades that once blocked them from Wall Street now removed, the protesters streamed down the sidewalk and covered the steps of the Federal Hall National Memorial. There, steps from the New York Stock Exchange and standing at the feet of a statue of George Washington, they danced and chanted, “We are unstoppable.” Police say arrests had been made, but they don’t have a full count yet. As always, the protesters focused on a variety of concerns, but for Tom Hagan, his sights were on the giants of finance. “Wall Street did some terrible things, especially Goldman Sachs, but all of them. Everyone from the banks to the rating agencies, they all knew they were doing wrong. … But they did it anyway. Because the money was too big,” he said. Dressed in an outfit that might have been more appropriate for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the 61-year-old salesman wore a green shamrock cap and carried a sign asking for saintly intervention- “St. Patrick- Drive the snakes out of Wall Street.” He, too, praised Mr. Smith’s editorial and said it came just as the Occupy movement is again gaining ground. It was a sentiment echoed by others. Stacy Hessler held up a cardboard sign that read, “Spring is coming,” a reference, she said, both to the Arab Spring and to the warm weather that is returning to New York City. She said she believes the nicer weather will bring the crowds back to Occupy protests, where numbers have dwindled in recent months since the group’s encampment was ousted from Zuccotti Park by authorities in November. But now, “more and more people are coming out,” said the 39-year-old, who left her home in Florida in October to join the Manhattan protesters and stayed through much of the winter. “The next couple of months, things are going to start to grow, like the flowers.” Some have questioned whether the group can regain its momentum. This month, the finance accounting group in New York City reported that just about $119,000 remained in Occupy’s bank account the equivalent of about two weeks’ worth of expenses. But Ms. Hessler said the group has remained strong, and she pronounced herself satisfied with what the Occupy protesters have accomplished over the last half year. “It’s changed the language,” she said. “It’s brought out a lot of issues that people are talking about. … And that’s the start of change.”

Parliament starts on 12th March, will continue up to 22nd May

05 Monday Mar 2012

The Budget session will  start on 12th March and will continue till 22 May as per schedule. This session was postponed due to the Assembly elections in UP. Like the earlier two sessions, this also will be tumultuous with so many critical issues going to come up for discussion. The government will try to get passed certain bills like PFRDA, NCTC etc. which the opposition is going to oppose as was the case in the last session. The corruption issue will continue with more corruption cases coming to the fore and the latest Supreme Court order on 2G issue. Many state governments have already opposed the decisions of the Central Government which cut at the root of Federalism.

Certainly the Budget session will see fireworks

US Special Forces Asst. teams in India ?

03 Saturday Mar 2012

A Press Statement issued by the CPI(M) is given below:

The Commander of the US Pacific Command, Admiral Robert Willard had stated at a Congressional hearing that American Special forces assist teams are stationed in India along with Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Defence Ministry have denied that any such force existed in India. This denial only raises further questions.

The statement made by the US Pacific Commander is categorical. He states: “We have currently special forces assist teams – Pacific assist teams is the term – laid down in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, as well as India”.

India falls within the purview of the Pacific Command within the US military command.  The head of the Pacific Command has made an authoritative statement before a US Congressional committee.

There is no clarification from the US side that this statement is incorrect. The UPA government has not informed the country about the other arrangements which it has entered into with the US. For instance in the same testimony Admiral Willard has said: “We are working very closely with India with regard to their counter-terrorism capabilities and in particular on the maritime domain but also government to government, not necessarily……”

The Government should make a statement and clarify the issue.

Prime minister against Minimum Wage ?

28 Tuesday Feb 2012

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in General, Uncategorized

Is the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh against grant of minimum wage to the workers ? It seems so.

In the much publicised NREGS, the workers are given Rs. 100 as daily wage. The fact that even this  is not given in most of the places is another issue. The Karnataka High Court on a petition has ordered that the NREGS workers should be given the minimum wage declared by the Karnataka Government, which is higher than provided under NREGS.  The Prime Minister wanted to appeal against this order of the High Court, which means that he don’t want to give more than Rs.100/. As per the government of India orders itself, the   stands more than Rs. 200. Jairam Ramesh, Central Minister advised the Prime minister not to go on appeal against the Karnataka High Court order. But Prime Minister insisted and the case is under filing.

The Prime Minister was very particular in asking the banks to bail out the King Fisher Airlines immediately. But in the case of the low paid workers, he wants  to approach the Supreme Court to deny minimum wages to the low paid workers. Is he only the Prime Minister of the rich and powerful?
