Com. Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary, CPI(M) has written to the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi that why action is not being taken against the big corporates and borrowers, who have taken large amount of loans from banks and not returned them resulting in NPA of lakhs of crores of rupees. He mentioned 10 big corporates, together who are to repay more than Rs. 7 lakh crore. They are Adani Group (Rs. 96,031 crore), Essar Group (rs. one lakh crore), GMR Group (Rs. 47,976 Crore), GVK Group (Rs. 33,933 crore), Jaypee Group(Rs. 75,163 crore), JSW Group(Rs. 58,171 crore), Lanco Group(Rs. 47,102 crore), Reliance Group(Rs. 1.25 lakh crore), Vedanta Group (Rs. 1.03 lakh crore) and Videocon Group (Rs. 45,405 Crore).

Com.Sitaram Yechury also questioned why the SBI is recapitalising the Public Sector Banks with 2-4 lakhs crores of rupees, instead of recovering the loans by the banks from these defaulters?

From the available indications, it may be some Rs. 30 to 40 lakhs of crore which the corporates must have benefited by not returning the loans from the PSU Banks. And the Central Government, whether UPA or NDA, sit tight without taking any action. Is this not crony capitalism?

All India Insurance Employees Association (AIIEA), the mighty organisation of the employees of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), completes 65 years of dedicated service to the employees and the nation. From the time of its formation on 1st July 1951, it has marched ahead on the correct working class line and had always made all out efforts to make LIC, a service orientated organisation. With more than 80% of membership in LIC, AIIEA will continue its efforts to improve the services as also improve the status of its workers.

I have close connection with the AIIEA for more than 50 years. In the Foundation Conference of BSNLEU at Visakhapatnam in 2001, Com.N.M.Sundaram, then GS of AIIEA, was present and inaugurated. In most of the AIIEA AICs, GS BSNLEU was invited. Myself had the opportunity to attend many of these conferences, including the Delhi AIC. In forming BSNLEU in many centres, AIIEA has given all help to us.

Best Wishes and Revolutionary Greetings leaders and workers of AIIEA on the 65th anniversary of foundation day of AIIEA!

The committee appointed by the government to recommend the policy of creating a land bank of the surplus land of the PSUs is in its last phase. The recommendations are expected to be submitted in a few weeks. The proposal is to sell the surplus land available with the PSUs. The corporates have been putting much pressure onthe government to get these lands in the centre of the cities for real estate and for construction of big hotels and other business buildings.

Though the committee is expected to recommend to utilise these spaces for government departments, the main intention is only to sell it to the corporates. Already the buildings and land of the closed PSUs are under sale.

The people of Kerala have the experience that during the LDF government, the PSUs will improve and become profitable, while during the UDF rule they will become ineffective and loss making. During the last UDF rule, out of the total 46 PSUs, only 10 were profitable. When the last LDF left 18 PSUs were profitable.

Now the Kerala Government has stated that it will make all out efforts to strengthen the PSUs. The work has already started. There is no doubt that many of the PSUs will be improved and made financially viable during the present regime.

During the UDF government in Kerala, the state PSUs were purposely made ineffective and weakened for closure and privatisation. The new LDF government and the Chief Minister has declared that the state PSUs will be revived and strengthened.

It is necessary for this purpose to prepare a White Paper on the present situation of all the state PSUs continued with action plan to rejuvenate them. Opinions/Suggestions from the trade unions, experts, public and the workers of these PSUs may be taken, before finalisaion of the programme.

The people of the country have to understand the difference between pro-PSU policy of the LDF government and the anti-PSU policy of the NDA government.

CITU Condemns Retrograde Move to Sell Out
Public Sector Companies With Huge Asset

New Delhi, June 15: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions condemns the retrograde move by the Govt of India to fast track selling out the Central Public Sector Enterprises with its huge asset base to private hands. With this dubious intent, the NITI Ayog has been made to submit a list of CPSEs to Prime Minister’s office recommending fast track sale of those companies on various pretext.

It is a matter of alarm that in order to facilitate sale-out of the CPSEs, the NITI Ayog has been made to recommend further capital investment from national exchequer in some of those CPSEs like Air India, FACT , Chennai Petroleum, Madras Fertilisers etc, not just to revamp their operational efficiency, but to make them saleable to private hands.

The history of such strategic sale of around nine CPSEs, like IPCL, BALCO etc during the previous NDA regime reveals that each of those CPSEs with their huge asset-base were sold at prices less than one fourth of their real asset value at then market prices, that too, virtually to a single bidder, as observed by CAG at that material time. The Narendra Modi Govt at present has become more desperate in selling out huge national assets in the chosen CPSEs to its private corporate constituency, both domestic and foreign, at a throw away price, much to the detriment of national interest. Two years’ BJP regime could not create nor facilitate any new establishments for productive employment generation in any significant scale except making loud noises through media-hype and creating statistical illusions on GDP growth; on the other hand the Govt is desperately moving ahead for mega-sale of huge national assets through sale of CPSEs.

The NITI Ayog while making such disastrous recommendations along with the list of CPSEs for sale, went to the extent of arguing that “non-priority sector CPSE, once revived, could always be considered for strategic disinvestment”. Could devility go further ? Can Airlines, petroleum companies, fertilizer producing units be construed as “non-priority sector” in our country by any stretch of imagination ? But a Govt in a hurry to establish its corporate loyalty and also so called “reforms-credential” can certainly go to such devilish extent, totally unconcerned of national interest.

Such retrograde move of frittering away national assets in country’s CPSEs must be combated and resisted by the working class movement of the country. The united platform of country’s trade union movement comprising almost all the trade unions and federations of the country has already decided to go in for countrywide general strike on 2nd September 2016 demanding, inter alia, the withdrawal of such disastrous move of sale-out of national assets and CPSEs, in order to defend the working people as well as to defend the national economy.

The CITU while calling upon the working people and trade unions in the country irrespective of affiliations to prepare for staging the countrywide General Strike on 2nd September 2016 in a massive way, also calls for organizing united protest in workplaces and industrial centres against such retrograde move of privatization by the BJP Govt.

Cabinet approves merger of associated banks with SBI

Banks, Merger, PSU, SBI

Though the NDA government is taking undue delay in taking decisions on the recommendations of the VII CPC, on the justified demands of the working class and also stopping the high price hike, it is moving fast with destroying the Public Sector Units. The latest is the cabinet decision to merge the 5 associated banks with the SBI, which is strongly opposed by the bank employees and the trade unions. In the name of strengthening the SBI, it is destroying the associated banks which have served the people in a big way. The merger will neither serve the interests of the SBI. Many branches will be closed and employees will be reduced.

The organisations of the Bank employees are on struggle against the fully unjustified decision of the government. Our full support and solidarity to them. We demand the government to retract from the wrong step.

Modi Government continues its attack on PSUs

Disinvestment, privatisation, PSUs

The Modi Government has decided to privatise many government corporations and to sell up to 51% to private in some other corporations. It seems that as per this decision, the BJP government will dispose almost all the central PSUs to the private in the name of garnering funds for the government.

Thousands of acres of land in various metro cities owned by these corporations are going to be handed over to the private companies from meagre amounts. Existing employees of these PSUs will lose jobs, once these are transferred to private.

The Central trade unions and the public sector unions have to confront this all round attack and defeat the government conspiracy. Otherwise, there will be no central PSUs by about one decade.

State PSUs will protected and strengthened – Kerala Chief Minister

Kerala, LDF, NDA, PSUs, UPA

During his speech at Kozhikode Tagore Centenary Hall on 12th June 2016 when he was given a grand reception, Com.Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister, Kerala stated that the state PSUs will be protected and strengthened. This is a very welcome assurance.

During the UDF rule, almost all the state public sector units have been weakened and made loss making. It is to be remembered that all these PSUs were strong and profit making during the period of the LDF government. Once again these PSUs are going to be revived.

Both the UPA Government as well as the NDA government at the centre have been systematically selling, closing and disinvesting the central PSUs during the past twenty years or so. They have become the promoters of the private sector and the corporates. The present position of the ITI, HMT and other such famed PSUs are well known to all.

The difference of attitude between the NDA/UPA at Centre and the LDF in Kerala towards the PSUs is well understood by the workers. While appreciating the correct stand of the Kerala LDF government, the working class have to fight and defeat the anti-PSU policies of the NDA government at the centre.
