Sad News.
Com. K.Varadarajan, popular leader and former PBM of CPI(M) passed away today. He was 74. He was ailing for some time.
Com. Varadarajan was leader of the kisan movement and was a a practical communist mingling with the ordinary people and workers. He was accessible to all. During my Delhi days, I had the opportunity to meet him several times and get advice.
He took class on ‘Historical Materialism’ in the T.U. class organised at Thiruvananthapuram in August 2011 in a very simple way understandable to all the telecom workers participated.
His passing away is a great loss to the working class.
Heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and Comrades.
Red Salute to Com. K.V !

Dr.Ambedkar

14th April 2020 is the 129th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution and the saviour of the down trodden. We pay homage to Dr. Ambedkar on this day.

Every year, 14th April, Ambedkar Day, is declared as a Holiday for central and state governments, but in the last moment. Why can’t it be declared along with other holidays before the new year starts. This was question was raised earlier also, but no convincing reply received so far.

Jallianwalabagh

One of the darkest chapters in the British Rule was the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of hundreds of innocent Indians who had assembled to protest against the Rowlatt Act/hear the speeches of the freedom fighter leaders. This was on 13th April 1919.

The Rowlatt Bill, which curtailed the rights of the Indian people and enabled the government to impose stringent punishments was strongly opposed by the Congress and the freedom movement. Mahatma Gandhi called for observance of protest strike and disobedience movement against the same. It was also decided to observe 30th March 1919 as protest day by fasting, hartal etc. Five people died in the firing by police in Delhi on that day. Protesting against this, countrywide demonstrations were held participated by thousands all over the country. The entire country was in a protest move.

In Punjab, the situation was more tense. Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satyapal,  who were organising the 1919 All India Session of the Congress in Punjab were arrested and taken away to some secret place. The people who started protesting were fired upon and some were killed.

A big public meeting was organised to protest the atrocities of the British on 13th April 1919 at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. More than 20,000 gathered in the place to hear the leaders. When the meeting started and leaders started speaking, all of a sudden, General Dyer came there with about 150 troops both British and Indian. Immediately, without any warning, he ordered fire against the people gathered there. It is recorded that 1600 rounds were fired and was stopped only when they ran out of ammunition.

It was terrible. Hundreds of people were killed on the spot and thousands were seriously wounded many of whom died later. There was no warning before the firing or at least the people did not know. And even if known, there was no way to disperse. The maidan was surrounded by walls/ houses and there was only a narrow path to go out through which even a vehicle could not pass. According to Government there were 400 killed and more than 1000 wounded. But this is far less than the actual casualty. General Dyer later told arrogantly that he wanted the people to be punished for defying the law. The British cut the water and power supply in the whole of Amritsar. People were fogged for coming out in to the streets. A terror was let loose.

The entire country rose in anger. Protest actions continued for days together. Revolutionary activities increased against the British. General Dyer who returned to England was shot dead by Udham Singh, a youth from Punjab who went to England to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

101 years have passed since this brutal massacre of the Indian people. We have got freedom. Every year on 13th April, the day is observed at Jallianwala Bagh, where a martyrs column is erected in memory of those killed, with massive participation, speeches, homage to the martyrs etc.

I had the privilege to attend and pay my respectful homage to the martyrs there, about 10 years back. All over Punjab and many centres in India, the day is observed as Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs Day. The day was celebrated with all solemnity with participation of hundreds of people. I was given a chance to speak  in the meeting held afterwards by the CITU state committee near the spot.

We all pay our respectful homage to those martyrs who have sacrificed everything at the altar of the freedom of the country. They will always be an inspiration in our future struggles and advance march.

( The Photo given above is the Martyrs Memorial erected at Jallianwala Bagh. The well in which many fell and died, the walls on all sides of the maidan with bullet shots etc. can be clearly seen even now.)

163 years over after Martyrdom of Mangal Pandey who started the First War of Independence in 1957

8th April 2020 is the 163th year of martyrdom of Mangal Pandey, who fired the first shot at a British Officer, heralding the First War of Independence (Sepoy Mutiny). He was a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry Regiment of the British East India Company, who shot the Officer on 29th March 1857. He was only about 30 years old.

However he was caught and executed by hanging on 8th April 1857 by the British officers. But within days the mutiny started and within weeks the entire north India, including Delhi, Meerut, Lucknow – all was under the control of the sepoys., the freedom fighters.

However, enhancement of well equipped British Army, lack of uprising in Bengal, Punjab and South India,  the difference of opinion among the princes/leaders of the mutiny,  the change of mind by the feudal lords and money lenders  that they will be more safe under British – all gave the British the upper hand and the ‘First War of Independence’ was crushed.  But within 90 years, the British had to go back and India got independence in 1947.

On this day, 8th April 2017, we remember and pay homage to the great martyr Mangal Pandey!

AIBDPA, B.Narayana Rao

With deep sorrow it is intimated that Com.B.Narayana Rao, senior leader BSNLEU, AIBDPA and cultural activist passed away at Mangaluru today.
He was appointed in P and T at Kanhangad in Kerala in the 1960s and later got transferred to Mangaluru.
Even when he was not well he used to attend the meetings of the union/ association. He participated in all the strikes and struggles and was victimised.

I have close relation with him for more than five decades. He was a committed and dedicated leader. His passing away is a great loss.

My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and comrades!

Drama writer, K.T.Muhammed, P and T

25th March 2020 is the 12th death anniversary of Com.K.T.Muhammed, Bhishmapithamaha or Nataka Kulapathy of drama writers / artists of Kerala. He has written about 40 dramas, including ‘Ithu Bhumiyanu’ (‘This is the earth’), ‘Kandam Becha Kottu'(‘Coat with stitched parts’)etc. He has also written screen plays for a lot of Films. He had his own drama team and club. He was honoured with many awards including Kerala State Film Award for best screen play.

Com. K.T. was an employee of the Posts and Telegraph Department. He first worked as an ED Packer and after passing examinations was promoted to Postmen and then to Postal Clerk. He was very active in the union and participated in all the strikes and struggles organised in P and T. He was suspended for his leading role in the Token Strike of 19th September 1968. He resigned protesting against the anti-worker victimization imposed on the strikers by the government and merged fully himself in writing drama and other cultural activities. But he continued his connection with the P and T Movement and his erstwhile comrades till the last.

I had the fortune to work in the union along with him. Many times visited his drama club. Even when functioning at Delhi, while visiting Kozhikode, I met him more than once at his residence along with late Com. K.Rajan, who was the Convener of the Co-ordinating Committee at that time. Once I gave him a copy of the one page article about him published in the journal of the Postal Union at the time when he was given an International Short Story Award award for his short story ” Kannukal ” (‘The Eyes’) in 1952.
There is a big Statue of Com. K.T.Muhammed installed in his honour in the centre of the Kozhikode Town. But by oversight or so, the name and other particulars are not noted on the statue. We hope the Corporation of Kozhikode will certainly fulfill its responsibility at the earliest.

Red Salute to Com.K.T.Muhammed!

Com.K.G.Bose remembered

11 Thursday Jul 2019

7th July 2019 is the 98th birth anniversary of the great revolutionary leader Com.K.G.Bose. He was born in 1921 and passed away at the comparatively  young age of 54, on 11-12-1974.

Com.K.G. Bose is the inspiration of thousands and thousands of Central employees and in particular that of P and T employees. He fought with the government for the rights of the workers and also fought against the revisionism in the organisation. His life and work is a saga of struggle, sacrifice and achievement.

I fondly remember the many times when I got the opportunity to be with him in the Conferences, in tours and in discussions. He was simple and friendly to all.

On his birth anniversary, I pay respectful homage! Red Salute  to Com.K.G.Bose!

Very sad news – Suicide by BSNL Contract workers in W.Bengal, Kolkata

01 Monday Jul 2019

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in BSNLCCWF - Casual and Contract workers, Obituary, Tributes

BSNL contract workers are not being paid salary for the past 6 months and the families of these contract workers are in starvation. Despite BSNLEU and BSNLCCWF are continuously taking up this issue with the Management, no improvement has come. In the meanwhile, news has come that 5 contract workers have so far committed suicide in West Bengal and Kolkata circles, unable to face the crisis created due to non-payment of wages. BSNLEU has written to the CMD BSNL, communicating these tragedies and demanding immediate action for payment of wage arrears. (BSNLEU Website).

We express our deep condolence at the sad demise of the workers who have contributed much for the revival of BSNL. BSNL would immediately ensure that the wages are paid so that such sad occurrences do not take place. The government and BSNL management is fully responsible for the suicides. The families should be given compensation.
