B.T.Ranadive

BtRanadiveCom.B.T.Ranadive, militant leader of the working class passed away 25 years back on this day, 06th April 1990. He was PB Member of CPI(M) till his death and was the General Secretary of the undivided CPI during 1948- 50. He was also the founder President of CITU.

Though it is 25 years since his death, his contribution to the working class and the progressive forces through out India is well remembered even now. He had attended many of the Conferences of the P&T Unions and I had been fortunate enough to meet and discuss with him the union issues several times. His article have been published in big three volumes by the CITU.

On the occasion of his death anniversary, my Red Salute to Com. BTR!

Red Salute to Kayyur Martyrs!

Kayyur Martyrs

It was on 29th March 1943, 72 years back, that  four young communist comrades of Malabar (Kerala) were hanged in the Cannanore (Kannur) Central Jail on charges of fighting against the imperialist British rule. They were  implicated in an incident in Kayyur in Malabar in which a police constable died. They are Coms. Kunhambu, Chirukandan, Aboobacker and Appu, who are called the Kayyur  Martyrs.

The case was foisted by the British to suppress and eliminate the Party, which was growing strong in Malabar, under the leadership of Com.Krishna Pillai, EMS and AKG. Before the hanging was to take place, Com. P.C.Joshi, then General Secretary of the Communist Party and Com.  P. Sundarayya,  along with P.Krishna Pillai visited  them. It was an emotional meet, but the jailed comrades who were going to be hanged within days, assured the leaders that they are honoured to sacrifice their lives for the party and for the freedom of the country.

What these valiant martyrs told the party leaders, when they met in jail,  is quoted below as told by Com.P.C.Joshi himself:

“KUMHAMBU, who was in the first cell, began:-

“The Party made me capable of doing whatever I did for the people. If the Party thinks I have done my duty, that is all I ever desired.”

APPU said: –

“You have brought great news of the growing strength of the Party. We will now mount the gallows with added strength. We joined the Party to fight and die for the freedom of the country.”

CHIRUKANDAN said:-

“We are only four kisan sons. But India’s millions are kisans. We can be hanged, but they can’t be destroyed. This is what has sustained us all through. These letters from all over the country make us feel sorry that we can’t live longer to serve them. We have known no other regret. If we had more lives we would have died over and over again for our cause.” He had taken a leading part in two kisan struggles.

ABU BAKER was in the last:-

“We have drawn inspiration from the life of our martyrs. We never dreamt that we will share the honour of being one of them, Tell all the Comrades that we will mount the gallows, fearlessly. My mother, is very old. Cheer her up. My brothers are very young. Educate them for Party work. I was the eldest member of the family. They have nobody left to look after them.”

They were courageous till the last. Their last words before their ultimate sacrifice was “Inquilab Zindabad!”

Red Salute to these sons of the soil, whose memory will ever be remembered in the annals of the Communist movement and the country!

We got freedom by the sacrifices of thousands of such comrades.  They died fighting against imperialism. We shall continue the fight against the inhuman imperialism and for a socialist society where all are equal and the needs of all are met.

Bhagat Singh, Martyrs

download (1)210px-Statues_of_Bhagat_Singh,_Rajguru_and_Sukhdev

23rd March 2015  is the 84th Anniversary of Martyrdom Day of Com. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukh Dev.

March 23, 1931 is a day written in the blood of the eternal young martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev who sacrificed at the altar of freedom for the country. It was on this day these young freedom fighters were hanged by the British on the charge of terrorism against the British Empire.
They were not terrorists, but the true sons of the country. They were young and wanted mother India to be free. It is to be remembered that Bhagat Singh was only 23 years old when his life was cut short by the hangman’s knot.
Bhagat Singh very well knew that he will be hanged. But he and his comrades were not afraid. What Bhagat Singh told to his comrades, before the sentence was pronounced shows how these comrades thought about the punishment.
I am quoting below the following from the Book on Bhagat Singh written by his comrade and another accused, Com. shiv Verma, who escaped hanging.

“Then Bhagat Singh laughed and said: Our punishment will be ” To be hanged by neck till we are dead. This is reality Comrades. I know it. You also know it. Then, why shut the eyes to it?”
He continued ” This is the highest award for patriotism, and I am proud that I am going to get it. They think that by destroying my terrestrial body they will be safe in this country. They are wrong. They will kill me, but they can not kill my ideas. They can crush my body, but they will not be able to crush my spirits. My ideas will haunt he British like a curse till they are forced to run away from here.”
” But this is only one side of the picture. The other side is equally bright. Bhagat Singh dead will be more dangerous to the British enslavers than Bhagat Singh alive. After I am hanged, the fragrance of my revolutionary ideas will permeate the atmosphere of this beautiful land of ours. It will intoxicate the youth and make him mad for freedom and revolution, and that will bring the doom of the British imperialists nearer. This is my firm conviction. I am anxiously waiting for the day when I will receive the highest award for my services to the country and my love for my people.”

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on 23rd March 1931.

Bhagat Singh was correct. The spirit never dies. And it did not die in this case also. The whole nation revolted and the freedom came much earlier than expected.
( Excerpts from ” Bhagat Singh on the path of liberation” by Shiv Verma”)

Red Salutes to Shahid Bhagat Singh, Raj Guru and Sukhdev!

Comrade AKG

A._K._Gopalan

22 March 2015 is the 38th death anniversary of Comrade A.K.Gopalan,”The Commander of the Poor” , freedom fighter and  top leader of CPI(M), whose entire life was a saga of valiant struggle for the cause of the toiling masses. He left us on 22nd March 1977, after one day of the withdrawal of the draconian ‘Emergency’ (1975-77) against which he fought with all his might, but could not know the victory, since he was in coma. Yes, Comrade, your struggle has not been in vain.

Wherever there was pain, wherever there was sorrow, wherever the people were exploited, Comrade, you reached there and fought for them. You did not ask for their politics, caste or creed, but fought against injustice wherever you saw it.

I was fortunate to  watch many of these struggles and sacrifices. I was also fortunate to get your guidance, advice and affection on many occasion.

Com. AKG, even when you were seriously ill, you could not take rest, but jumped in to struggle for the workers. I still remember many instances including the 1974 Railway Strike. You will always be remembered for your struggles and sacrifices.

Red Salute to Com. AKG!

Homage to Karl Marx on his death anniversary!

death anniversary, Karl Marx

downloadToday, 14th March 2015, is the 132 death anniversary of Karl Marx, the greatest philosopher and revolutionary the world has ever seen. He died on 14th April 1883 at his London residence.

The Communist Manifesto authored by him and Frederic Engels  remains the basis of the Communist movement in the world. The Capital four volumes written by Karl Marx analyses in detail the development of the society and the capitalist system in particular.

After the collapse of the USSR in the last decades of 20th century, the captains of capitalism declared that Communism and Marx have become irrelevant. But the crises in 2007 and afterwards made them think once again. According to a recent report, more and more people are reading Marx.

The human society has always moved forward, though sometimes for a brief period, it might have been stagnant or gone backward. The move from Capitalism to Communism is bound to happen, though it may take time. History has proven the inevitability  of change.

Twice I got the opportunity to pay homage directly at the cemetery of Karl Marx in London. On this death anniversary of Karl Marx, I pay my respectful homage!

Red Salute to Karl Marx!

N.P.Padmanabhan - NFPTE - 1968 strike - Kerala

5th March 2015 is the 21st death anniversary of Com. N.P.Padmanabhan, former Secretary, NFPTE and the Convener of the powerful Co-ordinating Committee of P and Unions, Kerala, for a tumultuous period of more than 10 years. Meetings will be held in all centres in Kerala to pay homage to this great leader.
Com. Padmanabhan was a charismatic and revolutionary leader. Appointed as Postal Clerk in 1945 in Calicut, within no time he became active in the union. He participated in the successful Postal Strike of 1946. After the formation of UPTW, he became an active worker of the same. When NFPTE was formed in 1954, Comrade Padmanabhan along with Coms. T.M.Janardhanan Master, Ananadan Master, K.Bhaskaran Nair and others organised it in the Malabar area. When the Kerala P and T Circle unions were formed at the Trivandrum Conference in 1961, Com.N.P. was elected as the Asst. Circle Secretary of Postal Class III Union and in 1966 Kollam Conference as the Circle Secretary. Next year at the Palakkad Conference, he was elected as the Convener of the P and T Co-ordinating Committee.
THe Historical One Day Strike of 1968 became a battle ground between the Central Government and Communist Government in Kerala.Central Government wanted all state governments to crush the 19th September 1968 strike of the Central Government employees with an iron fist using the drastic Essential Service Maintenance Act (ESMA). But the Kerala Government led by Com. E.M.S.Namboodiripad bluntly refused to implement the ESMA against the striking employees. Enraged, the Central Government was proposing to dismiss the state government. Anyhow, this did not happen. But the Indira Gandhi Government at Centre saw to that maximum victimisation was imposed on the employees of Kerala. Hundreds of criminal cases were filed, thousands of Rule-14 Charge Sheets issued, 300 workers terminated and hundreds of employees suspended.Even in 1960 strike, such victimisation did not take place.
The situation was tense. All the Circle and district leaders were either under suspension or termination. To face this brutal attack was not easy. The P and T Co-Ordinating Committee under the leadership of Com. N.P.Padmanabhan organised sustained and continuous struggles against the victimisation. It took about three years to take back all the terminated employees and to reinstate the suspended. But Com. Padmanabhan was not re-instated. He was dismissed from service.
The P and T House, the office of P and T Unions at Trivandrum was the centre point of many unions to get advice and support for their struggles. He was elected as the Secretary of the NFPTE in 1978 and shifted to New Delhi. He continued in that position till 1981.
His health started deteriorating due to the hard work and strain and went back home to Kannur in the late 1980s. He continued his activities from there. On 5th March 1994, he left us forever.
Since 1958, when I joined the P and T and got transfer to Kannur from Kottayam, he had been my leader and guide. It was under his indomitable leadership that we all went on in the 1960 five days strike. I had the opportunity to work with him at Trivandrum during my tenure as Circle Secretary and till his death.
Com. Padmanabhan was a real leader in all respects. The entire P and T movement and especially Kerala comrades lost a revolutionary leader in his death. His body was cremated in the Payyambalam Beach, Kannur, where a memorial is constructed for him among the memorials of leaders of the working class like Coms. A.K.Gopalan, E.K.Nayanar and others. When I went to Kannur to attend the AIBDPA All India Conference in February in 2013, I went there and paid my homage along with Com.P.V.Chandrasekharan, Patron of AIBDPA, A.K.Bhattacharjee, President AIBDPA, K.G.Jayaraj, General secretary AIBDPA and Com. Bhaskaran AIBDPA leader at Kannur.

Red Salute to Com. N.P.Padmanabhan, the Revolutionary leader! His memory will always be with us.
