CPI(M), Delhi, NE

New Delhi, Feb 12 : Condemning the attacks on the people of Northeast in Delhi, CPI(M) today sought drafting of an anti-racist law to curb discrimination and such violence.

Expressing concern over the growing attacks including the death of Arunachal student Nido Taniam and several incidents of rape, the party Politburo said, “There is no doubt that there is a racist bias in such attacks.”

“It is imperative that citizens from any part of the country are able to live in peace and harmony and pursue their work or studies in the capital of India without being subject to racist attacks,” it said.

Maintaining that all necessary measures need to be taken to ensure the safety and security of people from the Northeast in Delhi, the CPI(M) said the Centre should also consider drafting an anti-racist law to curb such discrimination and attacks. (Courtesy: Ganashakti)

No Euro, No Coffee

08 Saturday Feb 2014

I reached Barcelona Airport at about 0700 hours yesterday morning to board my flight to Delhi via Zurich. Fortunately, the check-in, security etc. was not much delayed and I was in the boarding gate by 07.30 hours. The flight was only at 09.15 hours. I wanted a cup of coffee and went to the shop in the airport. Since I thought that there will be no necessity for Euro today, I spent all the Euro I got during the tour on day before yesterday. When I ordered for coffee, I was told that only Euro will be accepted. I had a few pounds, but that was also not accepted. I went to two three other restaurants, but got the same answer. There was no money changing counter opened at that time inside the airport. So I had to go without coffee.
The moment I got in the flight, fortunately managed to get a cup of coffee, thanks to the steward. By the way, the coffee in Spain is good. But the local comrade told that Coffee is better in Italy.
I had learnt a good lesson. Always keep some change of the local currency with you. Today, it was coffee, tomorrow, it may be medicine or somthing like that we want.

India has the largest illiterate population of 28.7 crore

37% illiterate in India, World literacy

Once again shame for India. EFA Global Monitoring Report 2013-14, commissioned by UNESCO has stated that India has the maximum number of illiterates, a 37% of the population with 28.7 crore. The population of India as per 2011 Census is 121 crore.
The literacy in India has increased from 48% in 1991 to 63%, but the number of illiterates has increased, due to the rise in the population. According to the report there are 55.7 crore illiterates in the world.
While the government is spending funds for higher and professional education, the basic education is neglected. Sufficient funds for the same are not allotted. The ruling class is not much interested in educating the poor, since education will bring to them strength to fight for their cause. Illiterates can be more exploited also.

In India two states, Kerala and Tripura are having more than 96% literacy. It can thus be seen that if there is a determination to raise literacy rate, it can be done. Literacy is the right of the citizen and the government should be compelled to ensure that each and every citizen has got the right to be educated. Literacy will empower the people.

Congratulations AAP! Delhi Government cancels 100% FDI in Retail

Delhi Govt., Multi-Brand retail

The AAP Government in Delhi has cancelled the decision of the earlier Congress Government allowing 100% FDI in multi-brand retail. When the UPA government took the decision for 100% FDI in Multi-Brand Retail, there was strong opposition even from its allies. Most of the state governments under Congress implemented the same. Sheila Dikshit Government in Delhi not only implemented it, but also gave many more concessions.
The AAP Government has now cancelled the decision, which will help the retailers in a big way. Good action!

Farmers shift from agriculture to other sectors – case of T.Nadu

A PTI report about the shifting of farmers from agriculture in large numbers due to loss and other problems shows under how much difficulty the farmers are and the government is taking care of them. The report is reproduced below:

Coimbatore: Jan 12: Nearly 8.67 lakh farmers have quit agriculture and shifted to other sectors during the last 10 years in Tamil Nadu as per the 2011 census, a farmer’s body leader said today.

Federation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural Associations Secretary S Nallasami said that the Census suggested that from 2001 to 2011, 8,67,582 farmers have stopped agriculture due to various reasons, including huge loss.

Moreover, there was an increase in the number of agricultural labourers during the period, as the farmers sell their land to real estate and prefer to work on daily wage, he said in a release here.

He attributed the reason for the plight of the farmers to wrong import policy of the Centre, unremunerative prices for farmers’ produce, industrialistion and urbanisation, coupled with the failure to divert the rain and other waters going to sea to the farmers’ fields, by linking rivers.

On fixing prices for the produce, like sugarcane, Nallasami said while the Government was implementing the recommendations of the Pay commission immediately, it was not bothered about the suggestions of the Commission for Agriculture Cost and Price, leaving the farmers in the lurch and at the mercy of the middlemen.

EPF interest 8.5% for this year.

The Central Board of Trustees of the EPF which will meet on 13th January is expected to announce 8.5 % interest for the deposits, just like last year.

The EPFO, which is estimated to have an income of Rs 20,796.96 crore in the current fiscal, needs Rs 20,740 crore to pay 8.5 per cent interest to the subscribers.

EPFO had provided 8.5 per cent interest in the 2012-13 fiscal, which was higher than 8.25 announced in 2011-12. The demand of the employees organisations are that the interest should be 9.5% which is not agreed.

good decision, More courts in Delhi

The Chief Justice of Delhi has stated that 47 new courts will be opened in the state to speed up the pending court cases. A good decision, considering the long delay in finalising the cases.
Whether other states will follow suit? It will be better, if they do.

94.65%, Kerala, literacy, Tripura

The Tripura is in the top position in the country with regard to literacy. As per the latest statistics Tripura has got 94.65% literacy, thus putting Kerala in to second position with 93.91%. As per the 2011 census, Kerala was in the first position.

For Tripura, this is a big achievement. In 2001 Census,Tripura was in the 13th position. In 2011 Census, it was in the fourth position. Now it has reached the first position with 94.65%. Since more than 90% literacy is treated as 100% literacy, both Kerala and Tripura are now treated as 100% literate. Hearty Congratulations to the Tripura Government and the people. Both Kerala and Tripura have been declared as 100% literacy states under the Left Front Rule.

Com. Manik Sarkar, Chief minister of Tripura, however, is not satisfied. He wants 100% literacy literally. He stated that efforts are on for the same.
