Aung San Suu Kyi

Welcome to Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratic voice of Myanmar and Nobel laureate to India! She was imprisoned in her home for many years by the Military Junta in Myanmar, though her party one in the elections. Now she has been freed and has come to India for a short visit on the invitation of Smt. Sonia Gandhi. Suu Kyi was a student in India and will meet many of her friends and leaders in India. A short report from “Ganashakti” on the visit is reproduced below:

Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi arrived here today on a visit to India after a gap of nearly four decades as part of New Delhi’s ongoing engagement with democratic and multi-party polity in that country.     Suu Kyi, who is visiting India at the invitation of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, will deliver the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture here tomorrow.     The pro-democracy leader was received at the airport here by Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai.     “The visit of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would be part of our ongoing engagement with the democratic and multi-party polity in Myanmar. It would provide opportunity to exchange views on all matters of mutual interest with a view to building upon the positive momentum in India-Myanmar relations,” according to the official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs.     “It would be recalled Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had accepted the invitation from Sonia Gandhi in her capacity as Chairperson of Nehru Memorial Fund to deliver the Nehru Memorial Lecture when she met the Prime Minister during his visit to Myanmar in May 2012,” the spokesperson said. Suu Kyi was also given the Jawaharlal Nehru award for international understanding in 1992.     During her nearly week-long stay, Suu Kyi will visit her alma mater, Lady Sri Ram College, where she will interact with the faculty and students.     Besides her engagements in Delhi, she will be travelling to Bangalore where she will visit the Indian Institute of Science and the Infosys Campus. She is also scheduled to tour rural areas in Andhra Pradesh to gain a first-hand impression of rural development and women’s empowerment programmes  being undertaken in India.     Suu Kyi spent several years in India during her early days when her mother Daw Khin Yi was Ambassador to India. She also spent some time as a Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla in 1987.

Samar Mukherjee - CPI(M)

The living legend CPI(M) leader Com. Samar Mukherjee had his 100th Birth Day on 7th November 2012. A comrade who have been a an energetic Member of Parliament, who took up many important issues of the workers and people, a member of the Politburo of CPI(M) and  respected  by all  has reached the centenary year. He was felicitated in a meeting held at Kolkata attended by senior leaders of the party and many others. Usually, CPI(M) does not  organise birthday celebrations and this was as exception.

I had the opportunities to meet Com. Samar Mukherjee on a few occasions. While he was staying at the Parliamentary Party Office, New Delhi, I met him requesting to take up some issues of the telecom workers in the Parliament. He took up the matter immediately. He was so simple in his manners and I felt no difficulty in interacting with him.

My Best Wishes and Greetings to Com. Samar Mukherjee! Wish him many returns of the Day!

Victory of Socialist Revolution in USSR

USSR - 95 anniversary

95 years have passed after the successful socialist revolution in Russia. Later the USSR was formed and for about 60 years the USSR matched in all respects with the USA and even surpassed in many areas. The collapse of the USSR in the eighties completely changed the political balance of the world.

During those 60 years, USSR assisted in the liberation of many countries, including India, from the colonial masters and helped them to grow and develop infrastructure. It could stop the US attack on Communist Cuba more than once. The so called invincible war machine of Hitler has to eat dust before the Red Army of the Soviet Union and completely surrender.USSR’s role in the success of the allies is appreciated worldwide.

In the march of time some times such things as collapse of the Soviet Union happens. But the setback is temporary. The mankind will certainly march ahead to socialism and communism in the long run. That is what history has taught us.

Sandy, Neelam – Nature shows its anger ?

Sandy - Neelam storms

This week has seen the fury of the nature through the hurricanes and storm in the Carribean, United States etc by the Sandy and in the east of India by the Neelam. According to the latest news, about 100 people have been killed and thousands of houses and other buildings collapsed, complete failure of electricity and flooding of cities including New York.

The east coast of India, Tamilnadu, A.P. etc. has to face the storm and cyclone named Neelam. This area has always been the victim of such natural calamities due to its particular position. It is reported that some people are dead and missing.

All of us feel the great losses and convey our deep grief at these great tragedies. Our condolence to the bereaved and those who lost their homes and all.

Is the continued storms, sunamis and other natural calamities a sign of the  reaction of the nature to the utter abuse of the nature by the humans? As the scientists and naturalists have been warning, nations and people have to be very careful to save the environment and the nature. Of course, despite all these, there may be natural calamities which can not be avoided.

Kerala formation - EMS

The present Kerala State was formed on 1st November 1956 by merging the princely Travancore and Kochi and the Malabar coast which was under the Madras State. The reconstitution was made on linguistic basis, which was the demand of the people of Kerala. One of the top most leaders who propagated for this was Com. EMS Namboodiripad. He fully justified the demand for “Aikya Kerala”, in his book on the subject and through many articles. The demand of the people was achieved on 1st November 1956. It is history that the Communists won the first election to Kerala State and Com. EMS Namboodiripad became the First Chief Minister of the state.

Best Wishes to the people of Kerala on this Day!

Jaipal Reddy shifted from Petroleum on Reliance pressure?

Jaipal Reddy - Coal - Reliance, petroleum -

All the indications on the unceremonious shift of Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy to another low profile  Ministry points to the pressure put on the Prime minister / Congress by the private petroleum companies including Reliance. The Minister had taken a strong stand against the Reliance and other petroleum companies on certain issues safeguarding the interest of the nation.

Is the UPA government become completely subordinate to the interest of the corporates? It seems so.

winter - Delhi

The winter has entered Delhi in its own smooth way. The night has become cool and pleasant. The temperature in the day has come down. The leaves of the trees have started falling. The students going to the schools in the early morning has started to wear sweaters. The coconut oil has started freezing. Yes, winter has reached Delhi.

This is the time of festivals and Delhites always celebrate festivals in a great way. Welcome winter! But a few days more and it will be severe cold for about two months.

India lags behind world in health and hunger

Healthcare - World bank Report

It is a shame for the Indian rulers that the country is far behind in removing hunger. As per the World Bank reports, India ranks 65 in a total of 79 countries in terms of hunger measurements.

In case of child nutrition, India is the last but one out of 129 countries, as per the same World bank report. Only one small country, which most of us might not heard even, Timor Leste, is the last.

In the same way, 36% of Indian women of childbearing age are undernourished compared with only 16% in 23 Sub-Saharan countries.

The India government should hang its head in shame. Even after 65 years of its independence it had not cared the health of its people. The amount for health is being reduced in % every time. The sector, like higher education, is left to the mercy of the private sharks, who mint money in billions and millions by making them business and maximum profits.

This should change. The Indian Government should be shaken up and made to change its policy and take care of the health of the common people.
