“Only extremely selected cases to be prosecuted” – Finance Minister

Limited prosecution - FM

” A word of caution is necessary. We must be extremely selective in deciding which cases to prosecute under the money laundering law. Otherwise, we will be overwhelmed with cases that would be required to prosecute.” These are the words of the Finance Minister P.Chidamabaram. He was  addressing the officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today.

It is to be noted that this is not a statement from a business man or from vested interests. It is from the Finance Minister of the country who is responsible to increase the revenue for the country and also to  punish the economic offenders. That Minister is asking the ED officers to prosecute only ‘selected persons.’ Does that mean that only those people, whom the government  wants to prosecute is to be prosecuted and those whom the government wants to save should not be prosecuted?

Any way this seems to be a green signal to the money launderers that they ‘need not be unduly worried; prosecution will be very limited.’

SC questions Z category security to Mukesh Ambani

Mukesh Ambani - Z Security

The UPA government has got a rap once again from the SC against its wrong decisions. The Supreme Court today questioned how a ‘private business man in Mumbai’  has been granted Z category security which is limited to state officers only. Further it observed that had sufficient security been available, the 5-year girl should not have been raped and assaulted. Though the SC did not name the person, it was clear that the SC was pointing to Mukesh Ambani.

The Supreme Court is fully justified in putting the government in the dock. While there has been many cases where real threat was there, the government sat silent. But when it is the richest person in the country it acted with electric speed to provide security and justified it. It allotted 33 commandos, vehicles and justified stating that he will pay for it.  Today it is Ambani and tomorrow it will be Tata and other corporate honchos.

The government should act immediately and cancel the unjustified Z category security cover to Mukesh Ambani. Let him take private security as already stated by the Supreme Court.

CBI should be free from government intervention – SC

SC on CBI sharing

In a big blow to the UPA government, the Supreme Court has stated in strong words that how the CBI report was shared ‘as desired’ by the Law minister and Joint Secretaries of Law and Coal Ministries. It warned the government that CBI should be free from government intervention. The CBI has also been asked by the SC to inform whether any other person has shared the CBI report.

The above observations of the Supreme Court  has put the government in a very embarrassing position. Dismissing the demand of the opposition parties that the Law Minister and the Prime Minister should resign on this issue, Prime Minister was reported to have stated that ‘the issue is in the court.’ Now that the court has clearly and strongly criticised the action of sharing the CBI report, the government will have to take some action. The continuation of the Law minister Ashwini Kumar has become untenable. At least to save face, the Prime minister will have to sack the Law minister.

Nelson Mandela on TV after more than one year

Nelson Mandela

It is reported from Johannesburg, capital of South Africa, that Nelson Mandela, the veteran leader of the South African Freedom movement, the first President of free South Africa and the leader who fought his entire life against apartheid and suffered long 27 years in jail in Robben Island appeared before TV two days back after a long period. It is stated that the 95 year old Mandela has recovered from the illness for which he was hospitalised. My Best Wishes to the icon of African Freedom for good health. Report from Johannesburg is given below:

Johannesburg, Apr 30 Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has appeared on television for the first time in almost a year, with South African President Jacob Zuma saying the ailing leader was in “good shape.” Led by Zuma, an African National Congress delegation met the 94-year-old statesman at his residence yesterday. Local television networks later broadcast footage of the meeting that took place at Mandela’s home here. “He’s looking very good, he’s in good shape,” the ANC leader told the South African Broadcasting Corporation after the meeting, the first update on his health since being discharged from a hospital earlier this month. However, the visuals have been treated with some scepticism as the footage shows the ageing leader looking frail, distant and unresponsive during the meeting. The video shows Mandela sitting in an armchair with his head propped up by a pillow and legs covered with a blanket. It also shows the former President staring straight ahead while the delegation members talk amongst themselves and to him. After the meeting, the ANC issued a statement saying theywere satisfied with Mandela’s health. “After receiving a briefing from the medical team, the National Officials are satisfied that President Mandela is in good health and is receiving the very best medical care,” a statement from the party said. It added that the delegation found “President Mandela in good shape and in good spirits.” Mandela, who will turn 95 in July, has had a series of health scares in the recent past, the most recent being hospitalisation for pneumonia. He spent more than a week in hospital for treatment, before being discharged in early April, the third time his health made admission necessary in four months. The anti-apartheid leader is a highly revered figure in South Africa for his role in ending the racial segregation at home and the reconciliation process that followed. Due to his role in the fight against apartheid in South Africa, Mandela was jailed for 27 years on Robben Island.

Mukesh Ambani a National Asset?

security - ambani

On the face of the severe criticism that has arisen on the decision to accord ‘Z’ category security with escort and pilot car with 22 commandos for the Corporate Zsar Mukesh Ambani, the Government has justified the same stating that he is a “National Asset.”

Now, how many “National Assets” are going to be given the ‘Z’ category security?  Tata, Birla etc. etc? Despite CAG criticism as also SC observations have been ignored by the government.

USSR - Lenin - Death Anniversary

Today, 22nd April 2013,  is the 143rd Birth  anniversary of the leader and architect of Soviet Revolution  Com.V.I.Lenin. For the first time in the world, a soviet state ushered after the 1917 revolution in Russia, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). It sustained itself from the brutal attacks of the nearby capitalist countries and grew to be one of the biggest and strongest nation capable of confronting the US, the citadel of capitalism. However, the USSR collapsed in the 1980s.

After 3 decades, the Communist Party  is once again strengthening in the present Russia, as the second biggest party and is becoming influential.

Adjourned Budget Session of Parliament restarts tomorrow

Parliament - Budget Session

The adjourned Budget Session of Parliament will restarts tomorrow, 22nd April 2013. It will be a stormy session, no doubt. The leaked draft report of the JPC exonerating the present P.M., Dr. Manmohan Singh and accusing former Prime Minister A.V.Bajpayee for the lapses is sure to be strongly protested by the opposition. The direct attack on the constitutional institution CAG for focussing on the scam will also be exposed.

The inefficiency and callous attitude of the Delhi Police administration, which is directly under the Central Government, in dealing with rape cases and protestors will certainly rock both the houses of Parliament, and Home Minister Shinde will have to answer.

The government wants certain bills to be passed  like increase of FDI in Insurance, Pension etc. The Left Parties will strongly oppose these so-called ‘reforms’ which are intended to maximise the profit of corporates and to marginalise the PSUs.

Finance Minister Chidambaram stated in Washington today that the government wants the FDI in Insurance to be increased from 26% to 49%. He added that if the main opposition BJP supports, this could be passed in this session itself. It is interesting that what is to be done in the Parliament is being first announced in a foreign county, USA. Of course US corporates will be very glad to hear the news. But the workers, specially the Employees of LIC, are not going to accept this lying down. Struggles are on the way to defeat the proposal, as in such instances earlier.

Village in UK, but the mobiles speak French

English Vs. French - St. Margarates-at-Cliffe

St. Margarets-at-Cliffe is a small village in UK, about 32 km away from the English Channel on the opposite side of France. But if anybody starts to speak on his mobile, the announcements starts in French language, not in English.

There is not much for surprise. The reason seems to be that the French mobile towers are more powerful in this area than the English towers. (A report from AFP News).

Rape of 5 year girl – Govt. should act – CITU

Rape - CITU statement

New Delhi, April 20: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions is shocked by the horrific rape and brutal assault on a 5 year old girl, daughter of a daily waged casual labourer, in East Delhi on 15 April. The inaction by the police when the father went to report her missing once again highlights the total indifference and hostility displayed by the police force to any complaints from the poorer sections of society. Timely action by the police to find the child could have prevented the ghastly incident.  Adding insult to injury, the father of the rape survivor was offered a bribe of Rs. 2000 by the police to keep quiet over the matter.
The CITU is outraged by the behavior of an ACP who slapped young women protesters at the hospital where the child was admitted. The CITU condemns the criminal dereliction of duty and blatant violation of laws by the supposed enforcers of law and order, and demands that any policemen or officers guilty of these should be dismissed from service immediately, arrested and cases be registered against them.
For effective deterrence the culprits in all cases of violence against women must be arrested and given quick and severe punishment. The CITU demands that fast track courts should be set up all over the country to ensure speedy punishment of the guilty.
It has been a long standing demand of the CITU that the government must provide crèche and day care facilities, especially in working class areas, in order to provide security and care for the children of workers who are at work.
In Delhi, which has become the crime capital of the country, a review must be made of security provided to VIPs, which should be curtailed sharply in order to free police personnel for duties concerning the common residents of the city.   The government is accountable for the deteriorating law and order situation in the country and must take responsibility for the same.
The CITU calls upon the working class to be in the forefront of struggles to stop the violence against women and children.
