More Fraud by the rich – Dy. Governor RBI

Banks, fraud, NPA, rich

It is a well known fact that the culprits behind the Non-Performing Assets (NPA) ie. the loans to be returned, are the rich. Thousands of crores of loans are not paid by the corporate houses to the banks which are treated as NPA and never recovered. But in the case of small loans taken by the ordinary people, the banks are very harsh and take all aggressive measures to recover the money.

It is the same with the frauds on banks. During the last 10 years, 1,76,547 frauds have been reported in the banks according to K.C.Chakraborty, Dy. Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Only 61 fraud cases involved a whopping amount of Rs. 13,000 crore. And who are the culprits? They are all the rich and affluent, according to the Dy. Governor. These are mainly wrong sanctions at the highest level of banks , meaning that the top officers in the banks are also involved.

We are happy that a top authority himself has opened the lid open on the frauds being committed by those in power with the rich.

Nationalisation, Suez Canal, war

The Nationalisation of Suez Canal by the President of Egypt Abdul Gamal Nasser on 26th July 1956 was a historic event of a developing country challenging the might of the European imperialist powers, France and Britain.
Britain and France, of course, attacked Egypt assisted by Israel to capture Suez Canal and to oust Nasser from power. But the world opinion was on the side of Egypt. The support of the Soviet Union and the intervention of the UN saw that Britain and its allies had to go back.
It was a big victory not only for Egypt but for the entire developing countries. It inspired other countries stand on its own legs.

Havana, Jul 26; Cuba is commemorating the 60th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s attack on the Moncada army barracks that is considered the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.
President Raul Castro is expected to give a speech at today’s ceremony in the eastern city of Santiago. The July 26 holiday is sometimes used to make major announcements.
Raul Castro is in the midst of pushing a series of social and economic reforms including relaxed restriction on foreign travel and a limited opening for small private and cooperative enterprise on the island.
Several heads of state from friendly nations are in Cuba for the anniversary including Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro, Bolivia’s Evo Morales, Uruguay’s Jose Mujica and Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega.

The world famous revolutionary poet Pablo Neruda who supported the Allende government in Chile died under mysterious circumstances after Dictator Augusto Pinochet took over toppling the elected government. Salvador Allende, who was President of Chile from 1970 was murdered in 1973. Pablo Neruda died a few days after Dictator Pinochet took over.

Now the Chilean Communist Party has demanded exhumation / DNA test of the human remains of Allende to verify whether the poet was murdered through poisoning. A report in the press in this connection is given below:

Santiago de Chile, July 25 (Prensa Latina) The remains of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda will be subjected to a DNA test to determine if his death was caused by natural causes or he was a victim of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship.
Chilean Judge Mario Carroza said the Legal Medical Service was asked to identify the corpse. If the results are not positive, the DNA tests will be conducted on the bones of Neruda’s parents buried in the southern part of the country.
The poet’s remains were exhumed on April 8. The DNA test is being conducted in response to a criminal lawsuit by the Communist Party of Chile, an organisation of which Neruda was a member. He was also a member of its central committee, senator and candidate for the presidency of the republic.
The investigations began in 2001, after Neruda’s driver Manuel Araya revealed that a strange injection was administered to the winner of the 1971 Nobel Peace Price, while he was at the clinic Santa Maria.
Neruda suffered from cancer and died on September 23, 1973, 12 days after the coup against President Salvador Allende.

Cuba, Greetings, National Day

Today, 26th July is the National Day of Cuba. It was on this day in 1953, about 160 revolutionaries under the command of Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada Garrison in Santiago of the dictator Batista. Though this attack failed, this started a series of revolutionary activities, which ultimately resulted in the revolution succeeding and Cuba was declared independent from the imperialists on 1st January 1959. The Socialist government under the leadership of Fidel Castro was established. Che Guevara, the Revolutionary leader was one of the Ministers, who later resigned and went to Bolivia to lead the guerrilla struggle, where he was murdered.

On this National Day of Cuba, I convey Revolutionary Greetings to the people of Cuba, who have kept the red flag high, despite the prolonged economic blockade by the imperialist countries led by US.

Parties snubs the Planning Commission Report on Poverty

Planning Commission, Poverty level

New Delhi, Jul 24 : Political parties, including UPA constituent NCP, today rubbished the Planning Commission’s claim that the number of poor people had declined to 21.9 per cent and said the criteria for identifying them should be updated.
BJP slammed the figures as a “political gimmick” and a “conspiracy” of the Congress to deprive the poor of the benefits of government schemes while CPI(M) said it amounted to “adding salt to the wounds of the poor”.
NCP, which is part of the government, said it does not agree with the Planning Commission figures and that there should be a new ceiling for gauging poverty considering the current situation.
BJD said the country still has a large population of poor people as he criticized the data that showed the number of those living below the poverty line has shrunk to 21.9 per cent in 2011-12 from 37.2 per cent in 2004-05 on account of increase in per capita consumption.
Commenting on the figures released by the Planning Commission yesterday, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, “The latest report showing reduction in the number of people below the poverty line is a conspiracy of the Congress against the poor to deprive them of the benefits of BPL schemes. This is the Congress mindset against the poor.”
He said these poverty figures do not reflect the price rise and is just a “political gimmick” to show more people are now out of poverty by lowering the benchmark. “We challenge the Congress leaders to show how one can survive on Rs 34 per day… They want to show more people are rich by changing the definition,” Javadekar said, adding the government was trying to present a “false rosy picture”.
As per the government benchmark, a person earning over Rs 34 per day is above the poverty line.
“The Planning Commission’s ceiling of gauging poverty is completely wrong… We don’t agree with these figures,” NCP leader and Union Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel said.
CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said the figures are “dubious” and “discredited” and amounts to “adding salt to the wounds of the poor”.
Rejecting the figures, BJD leader Jay Panda said a lot of work remains to be done in tackling poverty as the country still has a large population of poor people.
“There are many miles to go before we sleep,” he said, while suggesting that there should be no politics over the issue.(PTI)

22% under poverty line in India.

BPL, Planning Commission, Subsidy

A very interesting but controversial report about the number of people under poverty line has been released by the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission estimates that the number of poor people has been reduced from 37.2% in 2004 to 21.9% 2011-12.

What is the poverty line taken? If a person has got Rs. 34 income in a day he/she is above poverty, according to Planning Commission. This is completely non-sense. Every body knows that a person can not live with Rs. 34 a day. The present report of the Planning Commission is only to boost the morale of the UPA government and for propaganda purposes.

The present statistics will mean that a lot of people who were getting the benefit of BPL will be deprived of the same.

There should be strong protest and the Planning Commission should be compelled to correct the BPL and the number of people under BPL.

Challenging Govt. rules – Earlier Vodafone, now Wall Mart

Vodafone, Walmart

It has become a habit of the foreign corporates to ignore the rules and regulations of the government of India and simply violate it. And finally they win, the government succumbs to their pressures.

The Income tax department assessed more than 10,000 crores arrears on the Vodafone and issued notice for payment. The latter simply ignored it first. Then it said that it can not pay and will approach the International Court. The Government of India bent its knee and had approached the MNC for negotiation. What will happen in the negotiation? There is no doubt that the govt. will at last surrender and exempt the MNC from paying tax.
Now it is the turn of the Walmart. The government has stipulated that there would be 30% procurement from small industries. Walmart now says that they can not agree to this condition and that it has got to be waived. The government, of course, will bend again. This is the UPA government.
