50 years, People's democracy

On 17th June 2015, ‘PEOPLE’S DEMOCRACY’, the weekly organ of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), completed 50 years of service to the people since 1965. It has faced several challenges and attacks, including during the ‘Emergency 1975’, but had continued its publication without fail.

It was first published from Calcutta, which was the head quarters of the CPI(M). Comrade Jyoti Basu was the first Editor and continued till 1967. Later it was shifted to Delhi along with the shifting of the Party headquarters. Comrades B.T.Ranadive, M.Basavapunniah, E.M.S.Namboodiripad, Sunil Maitra and Sitaram Yechury worked as its editors later. Com. Prakash Karat is the present editor. Lok Lahar is the Hindi version of the PD.

The PD and Lok Lahar are the mouth piece of the CPI(M) which is necessary to be read by any communist. It clearly gives the view point of the party on each and every important issue and publishes the struggles of the people and the toiling masses.

Best Wishes to the PD and its wide readership!

Emergency, Freedom of Expression

A._K._Gopalan
“What is freedom? It was said from the Government side that freedom is to say that we support everything what the Government is doing. Our freedom is freedom of expression to criticize about the policies of the Government.”
(From the speech of Comrade A.K. Gopalan, M.P. in Lok Sabha against emergency)
Is the mindset of Emergency emerging in Modi Government?

Monsoon Session of Parliament starts on 21st July – Land Bill opposition continues

Monsoon Session, Parliament.

The monsoon session of the Parliament will start on 21st July, but it is unlikely that the BJP government will be able to pass its flagship amendment to Land Bill. The strong opposition from most of the opposition parties are continuing. The corporates will have to wait to grab the land of the farmers, though the BJP is determined to rob the farmers of their land.

The controversies regarding the four BJP leaders, Sushama Swaraj, Vasundhare Raje, Smriti Irani and Pankaja Munde may rock the Parliament. The self proclaimed clean image of the BJP is in tatters.

Repeat of Great depression 1930 – RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan

1930 depression

“Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan has asked central banks from across the world to define “new rules of the game” as he warned that the global economy may be slipping into problems similar to the Great Depression of the 1930s” (TOI)

So, the capitalist system is going to face another depression like 1930, according to RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. This is serious. The working class was the biggest sufferers of the 1930 depression. Even the pay scales of the Central government employees in India were curtailed and reduced. Of course, they fought back to the extend possible at that time.

Anyway, the workers do not want another repression.

Vatican recognises state of Palestine – A good gesture

Palestine, Recognition, Vatican

At last, the Vatican also has recognised the “State of Palestine.” While most of the  countries have recognised Palestine earlier, some countries did not do so, because of the pressure from the US and Israel. Now the recognition of Palestine by Vatican and Pope is a welcome step. The report on the above is given below:
“The Vatican signed a treaty with the “State of Palestine” on Friday, saying it hoped its legal recognition of the state would help stimulate peace with Israel and that the treaty itself would serve as a model for other Mideast countries.
Vatican Foreign Minister Paul Gallagher and his Palestinian counterpart, Riad al-Malki, signed the treaty at a ceremony inside the Vatican. “

‘Creeping Authoritarianism’ a danger to democracy – CPI(M)

'Creeping authoritarianism', CPI(M), democracy

New Delhi, Jun 25 :The CPI-M has warned that the present “creeping authoritarianism” in forms other than Emergency like “Hindutva” communalism and “corrosion” of institutions of the State can threaten the country’s democratic system.

The CPI-M gave the warning on the 40th anniversary of Emergency that was clamped by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government on June 25, 1975 while calling for a multi-pronged fight against these current trends.

“What is required is a multi-pronged fight against neo-liberalism, Hindutva communalism and authoritarianism.

They are all fundamentally linked together. Drawing the correct lessons from the emergency of four decades ago will help us in this current struggle,” former CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said.

Hated ‘Emergency’ completes 40 years

Emergency 1975

The ‘Emergency’ declared by Indira Gandhi government is completing 40 years. It was in the late hours of 25th June 1975, that the ‘National Emergency’ was declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, after her election was nullified by the court.

Democracy was given a burial. Civil rights were denied. Almost all the opposition leaders and activists at all level were arrested and put behind bars. Opposition M.P.s were also jailed. Complete censuring of newspapers  was ensured. No news of even a small criticism of government was allowed. Trade unions functions were strictly curtailed. Dearness Allowance was frozen. Extra constitutional forces controlled the government. Compulsory sterilization was forced. It was a period of terror.

Many leaders of Central Govt. Employees, including Posts and Telegraphs were put in jail. I was taken in to custody twice. These arrests and atrocities continued while the emergency was on.

Hoping that the opposition has been demolished and that Congress  will be elected with much majority, general elections were declared. Most of the leaders of the opposition contested the elections, while in jail. The Congress party was utterly defeated, even Indira Gandhi being defeated in her own constituency. The newly formed Janatha party came in to power. The hated Emergency was over.

Another such dictatorship and Emergency will not be tolerated by the people of India.

Congress, CPI(M), Sitaram Yechuri

Kolkata, Jun 22 : Scotching speculations of going with the Congress in its fight against TMC in Bengal, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury today said the party will follow the resolutions adopted in the last Party Congress of not aligning or joining any front with the Congress.

Senior party leader Gautam Deb on Friday last had kicked up a political storm by stating that the Left Front in West Bengal was now left with not enough strength to defeat the Trinamool Congress in the next Assembly elections and had hinted at an “understanding” with the Congress, saying “there

was a need for a greater alliance with other like-minded political parties to defeat the TMC regime.”

“He (Deb) did not say what is attributed to him, that we will go with the Congress,” Yechury told reporters when asked to comment on the CPI(M) central committee member’s statement advocating an alliance with the Congress. (PTI)
