CITU Condemns Govt. move to disinvest strategic profitable PSUs

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has strongly condemned the move of the NDA government to disinvest the globally competitive engineering giant BHEL, the profitable oil PSUs like ONGC, HPCL, BPCL,  the Defence sector PSUs like BEML, HAL etc which are already shortlisted for the strategic sale. This is tantamount to putting the country on sale, reflecting the desperate economic condition in the country, despite the high sounding claims of the government.

The CITU called upon the workers to be ready for a serious struggle against disinvestment and strategic sale of the PSUs. It has called upon its unions to organise protest at each work place and also through sending fax/ emails to Union Finance Minister and the Prime Minister demanding ‘Stop disinvestment in PSUs; No to strategic sale’.

The Central Trade Unions, including BMS, INTUC, HMS, AITUC, CITU have demanded to the central government that the minimum wage for the contract workers should be Rs. 18,000, as calculated and recommended by the VII Central Pay Commission. They submitted a 14 Point Memorandum to the Finance Minister Arun Jaitely on 4th January 2016, when the latter met them for pre-budget consultations.

The CTUs demanded to the Finance Minister that the ‘Hire and Fire’policy should be abandoned and there should be job-security for the workers. They strongly opposed the policy of arbitrarily amending the labour acts without consulting the CTUs. They pointed out that no labour amendment law should be moved with out consultation with and consent of the unions.

Further they demanded that the ‘ease of doing business’ should not be connected with the labour laws.

The meeting was participated by Tapan Sen(CITU), Vrijesh Upadhyay (BMS), Ashok Singh (INTUC), D.L.Sachdeva(AITUC), Harbhajan Sidhu (HMS) and leaders of other Central Trade Unions.

Com.S.Prasanna Kumar passed away

Deeply shocked and grieved to know that Comrade S.Prasanna Kumar, CITU General Secretary, Karnataka and a close friend of the telecom workers and BSNLEU, passed away today (23-12-2015) morning at Bengaluru due to acute heart attack. He was only 48. He was closely connected with the Public Sector TUs and also BSNLEU. He attended and addressed many meetings of BSNLEU. He took special interest in the Casual contract labour movement of BSNL.

My Heart felt condolences to the bereaved family, comrades and friends in this great loss!

CITU to start campaign against unemployment – ‘Right to Work’ and ‘Right to Job’

Ranchi, Dec 19 : The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today expressed apprehensions over Centre’s policies on labour laws as it aimed to highlight the issue of unemployment in coming months.
The ongoing general council meeting of CITU has decided to bring the issue to the forefront, which has been part of its 12-point charter of demands, the union’s general secretary and MP Tapan Sinha said today.
“… unemployment is grasping the economy like a cancer … the CITU has decided to go for a big fight against Centre’s policies in the next two-three months,” Sen told a press conference here.
CITU would unite students, women, youth, farmers and the labour force in support of the “Right to Work” of the unemployed and the “Right to Job” security of workers, he said.
He alleged that regular workers were being turned into casual or contractual employees in the background of 19.8 per cent registered factories being closed by December, 2014.
“The situation will worsen as we understand that there will be more cuts in the next budget,” Sen claimed.
He said the CITU has also deliberated on the tea sector facing the heat in its ongoing general council and discussed as to how its workers faced difficulty in being absorbed in the industrial sector.
Sen also said, “The Centre’s move to reform labour laws on the pretext of ‘ease of doing business’ will leave the mazdoor with no social security and drive them out of job… even former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had sung the same tune, but it did not happen.” (PTI)
