EPF, Private equilty

Despite strong objections from the central trade unions, the EPFO had decided and invested 5% of its funds in private equities. Now it is proposing to increase the investment to 15%. There is no guarantee for the safe guarding of the hard earned money of the workers and pensioners, since these investments in private equity funds are depends on the volatile market. The Central Trade Unions have to strongly oppose and defeat the new sinister move.

The committee appointed by the government to recommend the policy of creating a land bank of the surplus land of the PSUs is in its last phase. The recommendations are expected to be submitted in a few weeks. The proposal is to sell the surplus land available with the PSUs. The corporates have been putting much pressure onthe government to get these lands in the centre of the cities for real estate and for construction of big hotels and other business buildings.

Though the committee is expected to recommend to utilise these spaces for government departments, the main intention is only to sell it to the corporates. Already the buildings and land of the closed PSUs are under sale.

Prime Minister warns tax evaders

NEW DELHI: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday used his ‘ Mann ki Baat ‘ radio programme to deliver a stern message – don’t evade taxes and come clean by September 30. Modi also used the platform to mount an attack on the Congress to mark the 41st anniversary of the declaration of Emergency.
“In our big cities, when we see some of the houses that are worth crores, there seems to be some discord. Some people make well over 50 lakh rupees a year, but don’t declare it. They do this to avoid paying their taxes. I am calling on all of them to come forward and declare their true incomes and pay their taxes by September 30,” said PM Modi in the radio address.
“There will be no leniency after that,” he added.” (Courtesy: Times of India)

Declaration is well taken! But what about action? Both NDA and UPA governments have declared umpteen times about catching the tax evaders; But nothing has been done. It is only the salaried people who are paying the taxes correctly. Most of the rich, business barons, corporates evade the taxes either by crook or cheating. They are never punished, because they are close to the ruling parties and donate liberally to their election funds.

Common people are not interested in EMPTY PROMISES!

For the past few months BSNL has given more mobile connections than any private company. The new plans like ‘night free calls’ ‘free roaming’ etc. has attracted new customers. The service is also being improved by installing additional towers and new generation equipment. The move is now towards 4G.

The attitude of the workers have changed for the better. At the same time, it can be further improved. ‘Service With A Smile’ is not to be treated as a slogan only, but should be the way of life with BSNL employees.

The Phoenix is rising once again. BSNL Marches ahead!

The employees of the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) are on agitation against the decision of the Government to merge it with SBI. The government has decided to merge all its affiliated 5 banks with SBI as also the Mahila Bank. This decision is against the best interests of the bank, bank employees and the customers. Instead of discussing with the workers and settling the issues, the bank authorities have issued order prohibiting demonstrations, rallies, meetings and agitational activities near the bank premises. There is no doubt that these restrictions are engineered by the NDA government at the centre.

The working class have to fully understand the present crisis and prepare for might struggles. The 2nd September 2016 Strike called by the central trade unions against such attacks and on major demands of the working class has to be made a great success.

41 Years after ‘National Emergency’

'National Emergency 1975', 41 years

41 years have passed after the hated ‘National Emergency’ was imposed on 25th June 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. To tide over the political crisis consequent to the cancellation of the election of Indira Gandhi, the government declared Emergency, put all the opposition party leaders in jail, curtailed civil rights, news papers censured and authoritarian rule imposed. Many trade union leaders including that of government employees were put in prison.

The people fought against the Emergency and the government was compelled to withdraw it after about one year and declared general election hoping that the Congress will win with ease with most of the opposition leaders in jail. But common people thought otherwise. The ruling Congress Party was demolished and the Janatha Government came in to power. The authoritarianism was defeated.

People have to be vigilant always to ensure that such declared or undeclared Emergency is not imposed a second time.

Commenting on the British referendum on EU members, Luca Visentini, secretary general of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), said:

“This is a black day for Europe and the UK. It should sound the alarm to the EU so that it offers better prospects for workers.”

“There is great disappointment in Europe, not only in the UK. The austerity, reducing government spending, unemployment, the government ‘s failure to address the needs of people, the fact that the EU acts commonly makes people hostile to the EU. the workers want an EU that strongly improves their living conditions. ”

“The EU must ensure that this day does not mark the beginning of Europe burst, and not harm the jobs and rights of workers.”

“The European Union must ensure to enjoy new workers, to create a more just and equitable society and to invest in quality jobs, effective public services and real opportunities for young people.”

“The CES is combined with the TUC say that British workers should not pay the price of Brexit.”

“The ETUC will continue, and more, to fight for more social and fairer. ” (Courtesy: WFTU)

UK is out of European Union! In the referendum conducted in Britain whether to continue with the European Union or not, majority of the people voted for exit from the Euro-Union. Now there is some thinking in certain other countries also for similar exit.
The impact of the above decision is awaited with anxiety by many countries and the people.
