The policies of LDF government led by CPI(M) and UDF Government led by the Congress in Kerala as far as PSUs are concerned is very clear to the people. While the election campaign is going on in Kerala, the differences in dealing of the PSUs by the two fronts are being discussed.
During the LDF government, all the state PSUs become profitable and improves their functioning with the full support of the government. But in UDF rule, the PSUs are strangulated and made loss-making. They are destroyed to help the private companies.
A look in to the profit and loss of the PSUs during LDF and UDF governments given below establishes the above truth. These statistics are published by the State Public Sector and Autonomous Bodies Officers Federation( SPATO).
UDF GOvt. (2001-2006) – Average Loss Rs. 213.74 crore per year.
LDF Govt. (2006-2011) – Average Profit Rs. 292.45 crore per year
UDF Govt. (2011-2016) – Average Loss Rs. 645.96 crore per year
LDF Government has to come to save the state PSUs.
Comrade, I readily agree for the facts of the article that a government hand will be there for any loss or profit of a psu and the same holds good for the central also. Whether you are agreeable or not, is it not a fact that psu’s like Air India and BSNL have started making profit after the incumbent government? The same PSUs were under loss during UPA regime and now has come into profit zone …. leaving out the ideological differences is it not the time to join hands and work along with the government to see that BSNL raises to greater heights?? I will make it clear that I am not biased with any government and I’m with those who are helpful in making BSNL achieve greater heights….. My paramount interest is the BSNL should become the leading telecom provider and now with the backing of govt. and the dynamic CMD (there will be sort of small differences) at the helm, we can achieve our dreams…
Dear Comrade,
The BSNL Unions are always in favour of reviving the PSU and all out efforts will have to be made them. But both UPA and NDA governments are not interested in strengthening the PSUs. Their motto is ‘business is not the business of the government’. Present Communications Minister says that he will not allow BSNL to die. But why he is not paying the Rs. 6,000 crore due to BSNL for the refund of the spectrum, why he is not paying the Rs.1,250 crore allotted from USOF for the loss making connections of BSNL, why the government is not refunding the extra income tax of about Rs. 8,000 – 10,000 crores paid by BSNL, which will enable the company to purchase equipment and expand services. I had personally met the Secretary, DOT, USOF Administrator several times as also the Communications Minister in this respect. But all say that the government has no money and do not give the eligible funds to BSNL. This is what we are opposing.
With regard to the present improvement, it is mainly due to the efforts of the Management and the workers and the role of the government is very little. If the government supports BSNL, we will certainly appreciate it.
