Coal India Strike called off

It is reported in the press that the Coal Workers Strike has been called off after a marathon discussion in the late hours of 07-01-2015 between the Coal Minister Piyush Goyal and the leaders of the Central Trade Unions.
The minister said a committee will be formed to look into the concerns of the workers. The Committee will be headed by a joint-secretary of the government and will include one representative from each of the five trade unions that had called the strike.
The Minister also assured the union leaders that the government has no intention of denationalising the state-run Coal India Limited. “Coal India will be protected and the present and future interest of its employees will be protected,” he said.
Chairman of Coal India Sutirtha Bhattacharya  said no worker will be penalised for the strike and the losses made over the last two days will be covered.
We Congratulate the Coal Workers and their Unions for the massive strike and making the government to discuss and come to an agreement on the issues of strike. This is a victory for the workers in their struggle against privatisation and disinvestment.

A strong message should go to the government from all workers in the country that they will not allow the precious coal sector to be privatised /disinvested.

Organise the demonstration with mass participation.

New Delhi, January 7: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

At the call of the five  national federations of coal workers affiliated to various Central Trade Unions, seven lakh workers in the coal mines under Coal India Ltd and Singareni Coal Mines  have gone on total strike from January 6.  This total strike in the coal sector is to protest against the ordinance promulgated by the Government of India leading to  denationalization of coal mining in the country.

The Polit Bureau congratulates and greets the coal workers for building up total unity and for a successful strike.  The CPI(M) fully supports the demand of the workers to withdraw the coal mines ordinance.

Coal strike

The Five Days Strike called by the trade unions in Coal India Limited, against privatisation and disinvestment of the coal sector has started today, 6th January  and will continue till 10th January 2015. 5 lakh workers are on strike and the production in the coal sector has been completely stopped.

The coal  workers and theri unions are demanding the scrapping of the Coal Mines (Special Provisions ) Ordinance 2014 and also withdrawing the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Bill, which aims at denationalisation of the coal sector and its disinvestment. The bill could not be passed in the Parliament, and after the session, ordinance to the effect has been issued after the session was over.

We support the fully justified strike of the coal workers and demand the government to cancel the Ordinance which is completely against the interest of the country and its people.

A move to deny EPF to employees – 500 companies approach Labour Ministry

EPF, ESI, Option

In a very clever move, more than 500 companies  are reported to have approached the Labour Ministry to allow their employees to have option, how their salaries are paid to them, so that they can have more home-take pay.

It will seem to be an innocent proposal and favourable to the workers. But the fact is that, it is completely against the workers and in favour of the managements. At present EPF is compulsory at 12% deduction from the salary and should be remitted to the EPF organisation with an equal contribution from the employer. According to the new suggestion, the employee can decide whether to contribute to the EPF or not, or to opt for the New pension Scheme. If the worker opt not to contribute to EPF, then the employer need not pay his contribution, thus saving a lot of money and deny the same to the employee.

The Labour Ministry should not accept the suggestion, which is completely against the interest of the workers.

It is reported in the press that about 25,000 IT professionals may be retrenched from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the leading IT company in the country. The move is mainly to reduce the expenditure on salary payment. The professionals who are going to be fired will be having many years of service and will have to be paid higher. If they are retrenched and new persons are recruited, according to an estimate, about Rs. 80,000 crore can be profited by the company.

Now the time has arrived for the IT professionals also to unionize to fight for their job.

The government has approved the long pending request of Air India to recruit 800 cabin crew. Since there was acute shortage of cabin crew in Air India, the services were being adversely affected. It is good that at least now, the government has agreed to allow minimum recruitment.

At last the government has finally decided to hold the auction for 2G and 3G spectrum in February 2015. It has also agreed to hold the auction together as demanded by the private companies, instead of its own decision to hold the auction separately, which would have got more funds to the government.

As per the Cabinet decision, spectrum in 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 1800 MHz will be put to action. The reserve price for the same are fixed at Rs. 3,646 crore, Rs. 3,980 crore and Rs. 2,191 crore respectively. According to the reports, the government is expected to get between Rs. 64,000 crore and Rs. 80,000 crore.

The payment may be in installment and the government is expected to get at least Rs. 16,000 crore in this financial year.
