EPF interest for 2014-15 is 8.75%

2013-14, 8.75%, EPF interest rate

The Finance Ministry has ratified the decision of the EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees (CBT) to retain 8.75 per cent rate of interest for 2014-15 also. It was the same rate of interest for 2013-14.

This rate of interest on PF deposits would now need to be notified by the Labour Ministry as well as by the Income Tax Department. The decision would be implemented from the date of notification. The EPFO took the decision in its meeting held on 26th August 2014.

But this interest is less than demanded by the Central Trade Unions, which was 9.5%. The proposal of the government to reduce the present interest was strongly opposed by the unions and hence retaining last years interest rate.

In recent times, governmemt files  have learnt vanishing tricks. Whenever any enquiry is ordered, connected documents, files start vanishing. Now it is the Vadra DLF deal files.
Stringent action should be taken against the concerned.

Do not invest EPF corpus in Equity Markets

EPFO, Pension Funds

The Central Government is proposing to invest 15% of the Rs. 6.5 lakh corpus of the EPF funds to the private equity markets, on the plea that it will give more dividend/interest to the EPF account holders. But the real reason is something else. The private financiers have been continuously demanding that this huge EPF funds should be put in the market. Due to the strong opposition from the Central Trade Unions and the workers, the EPFO could not take such a decision, even 5% to be invested there. There is serious danger of the funds being washed away in the fluctuating markets and the account holders losing all their savings.

The new proposal, whether 5% or 15% to be investing in the market, is strongly opposed by all the unions and workers. The government should not be allowed to divert the hard earned funds of the pensioners for making profit for the private companies and losing it.

Bank employees prepare for strike as IBA denies adequate Wage Revision

Bank Strike, IBA, UFBE

The Public Sector Bank Employees have decided for a series of strike in the new year due to the adamant attitude of the Indian Bank Association in not prepared justified increase in the wages. The IBA is only prepared only to a meagre increase of 11%, while the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBE), the apex body of all the unions in Banks, is demanding 23% increase.  The latest talks also having failed, the UFBE has decided for a series of strike. One of the reason mentioned by the IBA is that due to the NPA ( bad loans), there is dearth of funds. The unions are questioning why the bad loans have not been recovered. It is the responsibility of the Bank managements to recover the loans of thousands of crores of rupees to the corporates and big business. The increase in NPA is not due to the employees, but only due to the managements favouring the corporates and rich.

The UFBE stated that a one day strike will be organised  on 7th January 2015, four days strike from 21 January  and Indefinite Strike from 16th March 2015.

We fully support the justified strike of the Bank Employees.

Failing to pass the bill in Rajya Sabha, Govt. opts for Ordinance for Insurance Bill

100% FDI, increase, Insurance Bill, ordinance

The government which failed to pass the Insurance Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha may opt to issue ordinance after the winter session is over. There are only two days left for the winter session to end and it may not be possible to pass the same since the Rajya Sabha is continuously adjourned due to the ‘conversion issue’ is not  resolved.

One thing is clear. The NDA government has decided to make the changes in the Insurance Act to favour the private companies, by increasing the FDI from 26% to 49%. The NDA wants it to be done before the visit of US President Obama in January 2015. Whenever the Prime Minister of India visits US or whenever President or any important functionary in the US government visits India, something to please the US imperialists has to be done according to the NDA/UPA governments. And now the US President himself is visiting India, a ‘great favour’. The favour has to be returned by increasing FDI, which is the demand of the US financial sector.

The interest of the US is more important to the Indian ruling class, than the interest of India.

B.T.Ranadive, CITU

BtRanadiveToday is the 110th birthday anniversary of one of the top militant and revolutionary leader of the working class, Com.B.T.Ranadive. He was born on 19th December 1904.

Balchadra Trimbak Ranadive was a bright student and passed MA with distinction. He joined the Communist Party  in 1928 and also became a leader of the All India trade Union Congress at Bombay. He actively participated  in the Bombay Girni Kamgar union and Railways Unions. He supported the Navy mutiny and organised solidarity strike in support of the Naval mutiny.

He was elected as President of the CITU and continued till his death. He was also elected to the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). A militant leader, he guided many struggles of the working class, including government employees. He was married to Com. Vimal Ranadive, herself a staunch trade union leader. Com. Ahilya Rangnekar, the leader of the heroic struggle of the Adivasis and a CPI(M) leader, is the sister of Com. BTR. All of them have passed away. Com. BTR passed away on 6th April 1990.

I had been fortunate to be in contact with Com. BTR for a long time connected with the P and T trade union activities. He had attended the Conferences of P and T unions at  All India level as also in the Kerala Circle Conferences. His guidance and advice in the trade union activities were inspiring.

On his 110th birth anniversary, my respectful homage to Com. B.T.Ranadive. We pledge to continue to tread the path shown by him.

Red Salute to Com. BTR !
