09 Tuesday Aug 2011

Quit India movement started on 9th August 1942 was one of the major agitation of the great Independence struggle. The Bombay session of the Indian National Congress in 1942 decided a major change in the strategy and decided to start the Quit India movement. This had a great impact and inspired the people of India to continue with the struggle.
India got independence on 15th August 1947 ending the British imperialist rule . Now the UPA II government is trying to be the subordinate ally of the United States, the leader of the capitalist powers in the world. History is forgotten by the present rulers. Or they have not forgotten and want history to be repeated?

What will be the future of the Rs.1,83,000 crore ( $ 4100 crore ) deposited in the USA by the Reserve Bank of India. Now that the US economy has been down graded from AAAto AA+, what will happen to this money? Whether it will be withdrawn or deposited elsewhere or keep it there?

Who are the 700 Indians who deposited money in Geneva HSBC Bank?

08 Monday Aug 2011

Government of France has handed over to the Government of India a list of 700 people who have deposited money in the HSBC Bank in Geneva. This is the first time that a list of such large number of depositors in foreign countries have been known. It is reported that many powerful politicians and corporates are in the list. But the Government has not released the names. It is only reported in the press that tax evasion issue will be enquired.
In the case of the 17 people whos have deposited in the LGT Bank, the government has so far not released the list.
It is somewhat clear from the reports that the government do not want to release the names since many are political bigwigs or people supporting them.
It is the duty of the government to release the list and take legal action against them for cheating the government and the nation.

BSNL paid Rs. 1023.9 crore as rent for the last 4 years!

08 Monday Aug 2011

The Joint Action Committee has been insisting on the management for the last few years to ensure that all the rented buildings taken by BSNL be vacated and accommodated in the BSNL buildings only. The reply given by the management was that there are very few rented accommodations and that also will be vacated soon. The wrong information given by the management is exposed now. According to a reply given in the Parlaiment by Murali Deora, State Minister for Communications and IT, the rent paid by BSNL for rented accommodation for the last four years is Rs. 1023.9 crore! It means an amount of Rs. 256 crore annually. This is not a small amount.
After the new CMD has joined, once again we took up the matter. Now orders have been issued to vacate these rented buildings at the earliest. Despite these instructions many officers at the local level are trying to continue the rented buildings due to their vested interests.
The Circle/District Secretaries should identify the rented buildings and compel the management to vacate the same at the earliest. In almost all places BSNL has now got suficient spaces for accommodation and there is no need for rented accommodation.

The credit rating agency Standards and Poor’s has downgraded US economy from the highest ranking AAA to AA+ after the US public deficit has increased to $ 14.3 trillion and is still increasing. This was four days back, on Thursday, 4th August.
Most of the European nations like UK,France, Germany are on AAA while Japan and China are AA- and India BBB-. The downgrading of US has been the first since 1917, about ten decades back. This is going to have serious repercussions in the global economy. Certain financial experts have predicted that this is going to be more serious than the global recession a few years back.
What will be its impact on India is yet to be seen.

The Concrete Hills that make Bangalore

08 Monday Aug 2011

Today I had a chance to visit the flat of one of my friends in Bangalore. After more than one hour journey from my residence I reached there. THe entire area is full of multi-storied flats. Most of the flats are about 19 to 20 storeys. Altogether, I am told, there are more than 2500 flats in this combine. That means about 10,000 people are staying here.
My friends’ flat is on the 17th floor. From the verandah of the flat I looked at the city. A wonderful sight. The entire city can be seen. A large number of high storeys buildings could be seen along with the greenery, the city have.
Bangalore has grown in a big way since the last 10 to 20 years. The entire skyline of Bangalore has changed. The old roads and many of the important key points of the city have vanished or changed. High profile office buildings and multi storied residential flats have come in hundreds. It has become a rich city. The roads are naturally crowded and it takes more than one hour even to move from one place to another.
I tried to remember the first time I came to Bangalore. It was in 1958, July first week. I was given telegraphic order to join at the Telecom training Centre at Bangalore for training before appointment in the P and T Department. I resigned my post as a teacher and started for Bangalore by bus from Tellicherry (Kerala). By the time I reached Bangalore, I had made friends with one school boy and his mother, who were going to visit the latter’s brother working at Bangalore. When we reached Bangalore, they requested me to locate the quarters of their relative who was in the army. It was the Canteen Department. We reached there by hiring a tonga (horse-riksha).It was night by that time. When I was leaving the place, the relative, who was the Manager of the Canteen Department, compelled me to stay there with the assurance that next day he will take me to the training class. I stayed there in the night and next day joined the training class and the relative found out an accommodation for me in a nearby lodge.
The city at that time was beautiful with a lot of gardens and planned roads. The climate was very good. Neither very hot nor very cold. It is said that many of the retired army officers settled at Bangalore because of the calm and beautiful climate.
Within the last 20 years, after the IT revolution has come in a big way, Bangalore has changed.I mentioned about the large number of skyscrapers which have been built in the last few years. The roads have become completey insufficient for the heavy traffic and the result is road-jam almost everywhere. Malls and big shops have been established. Many overbridges and fly-overs have been constructed. Work on Metro is going on. All these changes will make Bengaluru a real metro.
It also seems that the attitude of the people is also changing. The arrogance of the large cities is gradually coming to Bengaluru chnging the innocence of the a middle level town.
But still Bengaluru is a pleasant city with many gardens and nice people with their age old tradition culture .

Non- experienced person appointed as Chairman, Air India !

07 Sunday Aug 2011

The government’s anti-PSU policy has been the main reason for the loss to Air India and its downfall in the market share. Mismanagement was another reason.
Now the latest report in the media has shown how the government was playing with the Air India. A non-experienced person in aviation sector, Aravind Jhadav, was appointed as Chairman, Air India in the final period of the UPA I government. The surprising information is that he has been dropped from the selection earlier stating that he has no experience in aviation. This inforamation is revealed from an RTI reply from the government.
Many such skeletons in the cup-board may be revealed again.

Media downplays nuclear disaster

07 Sunday Aug 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in Uncategorized

It seems there is a clear strategy by the Government of India and the media controlled by the big business to downplay the nuclear disasters that happened earlier.
The dropping of the atom bomb on the Japan cities Hiroshima on 6th August and on Nagasaki on 9th August 1945 at the end of the II World killed lakhs of peopled and maimed similar number for life due to radiation. Every year 6th August is observed through out the world to pay homage to the victims of the atomic attack and against the use of atomic weapons any where in the world. Thousands of peace loving people all over the world join at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to pay homage and take pledge against nuclear war.
This year another nuclear holocaust occurred at Fukushima Nuclear Plant after the tsunami which caused many deaths and heavy damages. Japan is thinking of completely severing its nuclear installations.
BUt when all these are happening which have got a universal implication, Government of India and the media controlled by the big business are completely ignoring the same. The government wants to continue and further develop the nuclear treaty and arrangements with the US to a higher level. It wants to justify the deal itself which has been severely criticised by the Left Parties but by many political leaders. If the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings and Fukushima nuclear disasters are focussed, it will adversely affect their nuclear agreement and its future. For the government and the big media power and money are more important than the welfare and protection of the people.

Medical Check up then and now.

06 Saturday Aug 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in Uncategorized

I had been advised to have medical check up once in a year. The last check up was done in January 2010. Due to organisational and other schedules I could not find out the time till now. The check up was done at the Manipal Hospital in Bangalore for my wife and myself, both senior citizens.
To day being Saturday, there were many people registered for check up. So there was some delay and by the time all the check ups were over, it was about 1500 hours from 0730 in the morning. Many doctors checked us as also many tests were taken. The interesting thing I was feeling was that each and everybody, whether the Doctor, Laboratory Technician, Reception Attendant, Nurse, Co-ordinator, Attendant and everybody was so cordial, helpful, efficient and sympathetic. We were served with break-fast as well as lunch. Sometimes the delay irritated me, but there was no chance to express the same due to the timely intervention of one or the other staff.
The Doctors, mostly young, explained the details about the ailments, what medicines are to be taken and the diet to be kept. It was all of a positive nature giving some encouragement to the patients.
I was wondering how the medical profession has changed during the years. All of a sudden it came to my mind when I consulted a Doctor in 1950s as I was suffering from fever and also wanted to get a medical cerificate for getting leave from the Department.
He was an army retired Doctor. All his questions were rude and made some comments also about the people not taking care about health. He remarked tht it is because of unhealthy people like me that good service is not being given by the Department. He thoroughly checked me and prescribed medicines as aslo the medical certificate. Once or twice I had similar experiences with other doctors also. They never told what is the reason for the illness etc.
It was not that the doctor was not efficient or sympathetic. It was almost a system with the doctors not to enlighten the patient about his illness. It was considered as normal to be rude.
Through the decades a vast change has taken place and that is what I felt today. If all the government departments etc were like this while dealing with the people how happy and satified will they be. I am sure the present situation could be improved anyway.

Gold price rise again

06 Saturday Aug 2011

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in Uncategorized

Within 4 days the price of gold per gram has risen by Rs.25 making the present price Rs.2270. For eight gram it has reached from Rs. 17,960 to Rs. 18,160 a hike of Rs. 200/-. It may not be far away when this may reach to Rs.20,000.
The rich can make investments in gold. But what about the poor who wants to purchase a gold ring or necklace or some jewellery for marriage or some other function?
The government has to intervene to stop this rocketting prices.
