It is nine years since Comrade Jyoti Basu, former Chief Minister of W.Bengal for 23 years, PB Member of CPI(M) since its formation in 1964, and also a veteran trade union leader, passed away on 17th January 2010. He was not only an ideologue but a practical communist, who worked for the upliftment of the people. As the Vice-President of the CITU for a long period, he gave correct direction to the trade union movement.

I had been fortunate to meet and discuss with on two-three occasions, mainly on the issue of BSNL. At the 2005 Party Congress at Delhi, I could meet him and discuss about the developments in BSNL and the need for all the state government departments taking up BSNL connections only. He fully supported the idea and assured that there will be full support from the W.Begal government.

17th January is the 7th Death Anniversary of of Com. Jyoti Basu, the veteran Communist leader and Chief Minister of W.Bengal for about three decades. He has been one of the founders of CPI(M) and has brought the party in to power in W.Bengal.

17th January 2015 is the fifth death anniversary of Comrade Jyoti Basu, the veteran CPI)M) leader and the former Chief Minister of W.Bengal for  long 23 years from 1977 to 2000, a record in India. He was the Vice-President of the CITU since its inception and also a PB Member of the CPI(M)since 1964, when it started.

On his death anniversary, we pay our respects and homage.

Communist leaders were and are targets to be eliminated by the ruling classes. History is full of such incidents of attacks and murders.
The attacks are to eliminate not only the communists, but also Communism. But it has always failed to achieve the target.
Most of the world communist leaders had faced threats to their life once or more.
In India also the situation is not different. It was on 31st March 1970 that Jyoti Basu was attacked in the Patna Railway Station. While he escaped miraculously, the comrade who came to receive him was shot dead.
In W.Bengal, the attack on the CPI(M) continues unchecked. 145 CPI(M) cadres have been killed after Mamata Govt. came in to power.
The ruling classes thinks that by terrorising and killing communists, communism can be finished. They are completely mistaken. Communism is a force which will come back again and again till it succeeds world over. Because it is the system, where there is no exploitation of man by man and the interests of the toiling masses are safeguarded.

 Jyoti Basu’s birth Centenary   celebrations started in Kolkata on 8th July through a hugely attended programme at Mahajati Sadan in Kolkata. CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, CPI(M) Politbureau Member Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Left Front Chairman Biman Basu spoke in the programme at Mahajati Sadan attended by who’s who in the field of arts’, science and commerce.   CITU also organized programmes  in the state commemorating the birth centenary of the  mercurial  CITU leader , CPI(M) State Secretary Biman Basu  who presided over  the programme which started after garlanding on Jyoti Basu’s huge portrait on the stage. Leader of all Left Constituents including veteran  Forward Block leader Ashok Ghosh was present in the programme
