BSNL Management should agree for Child-care leave.

VI Central Pay Commission has recommended two years ‘Child Care Leave’ for women employees and the same has been implemented by the Central Government with certain conditions. But despite strong demand from the BSNL Employees Union, the BSNL management has so far denied implementation of the same in BSNL. This is completely an anti-women stand of the management. On the one hand the management says that there are surplus staff and is again and again proposing VRS, but when it comes to grant of Child Care Leave, it says that it can not be given due to shortage of staff. Interesting!

The management should stop this anti-worker, anti-women stand. The International Womens Day falls on 8th March 2011. It is an opportunity for the BSNL management to correct its stand and extend this right to the thousands of young women in the BSNL.

Wrong move by Govt. to save law violator Telcos. Stop it!

The UPA government is once again on the wrong move. If the reports in the press are correct, the Govenment is trying to let off the private telecom companies, which has violated the rules of the country and cheated the exchecquer to go scotfree, by imposing a small pentalty of some few crores.

Violations of rules and regulations have been the regular feature in the telcom sector, especially by the private telecom operators. They make profit of thousands of crores of rupees through manipulation of rules, getting ineligible benefits, cheating the government and so on. When these issues are brought to the notice of the DOT or the Governement, after dilly-dallying for a long time and giving chance for the offenders to cover up their misdeeds, a small penalty is imposed to mislead the public.

This happened earlier in the case of Reliance and other companies. Now the DOT is proposing another such escape route for the private companies. The Times of India dated 3rd March has reported that instead of imposing a penalty to the tune of Rs. three thousand crore for multiple penalties to the various companies which violated the rules, only Rs.28.5 crore penalty is being proposed by the DOT. If this is correct, the Government is once again salvaging the private telcos which has to be opposed and exposed.

Had not the government learnt any lessons from the 2G scam and related matters?

SC strikes down PJ Thomas’s Appointment as CVC – UPA Govt. in docks again

The UPA government is again in the docks. The Supreme Court has struck down the appointment of P.J.Thomas as Central Vigilance Commissioner. The SC slammed the Prime Minister’s Panel which decided the appointment. The Apex court said that the PM’s Committee ignored Integrity.

The opposition parties demand that the Prime Minister should make a statement in the Parliament.

The credibility and integrity of the UPA II government is at the lowest. Has the government any answer?

Through the Chalukya Empire Trail – Kudal Sangam, Pattadakal, Badami

Yesterday, 2nd March 2011, was a memorable day for me. I, along with my wife Pankajam, had the chance to have a bird’s eye view of the great cultural traditions of the Chalukya empire which ruled certain parts of the present Karnataka and nearby areas during the period 5th to 7th century AD. We visited Kudal Sangama, Pattadakal and Badami.

Along with Comrades G.B.Salakki, Asst. General Secretary, BSNL Employees Union and S.R.Makandar and P.R.Aurangabad, union leaders we started from Bijapur at about 0900 hours. We passed through  the fields on both sides where jowhar, maize and other similar crops were being cultivated. We also saw cultivation of sugar canes. The sunflower plants with their big yellow flowers were a beautiful sight.

After about two hours of journey, we reached Kudal Sangama, the place where  the three rivers, Krishna, Malaprabha and Ghataprabha merge together. First, the former two rivers join and a bit later Ghataprabha joins. The entire area is a vast  expanse of water resembling the sea. At the exact spot of the merger there is a monument at the site of the death of Basaveshwara, the saint who lived in the  7th century AD. Basavanna is considered as a Saint, but he was also a social reformer who opposed caste and inequalities in the society. In fact, he was a rebel against the orthodox Hinduism which hunted him down till death.

There is a temple dedicated to Sage Jataveda in addition to the monument of Basavanna. Thousands of people flock here to see the beautiful sight as also to pay their respects to the great rebel of the 7th century. There is a big auditorium here which can accommodate about 25000 persons. An International Auditorium which can accommodate double that number is under construction.

Our comrades of the Telephone exchange Kudal Sangama, welcomed us and showed us all the places of interest. We also took meals there, though early in the day.

Next we moved to Pattadakal. After driving for about two hours we reached there. This is a World Heritage Site and is maintained by the Archaeological  Survey of India.  There are groups of temples here constructed by the Chalukya Dynasty on the 6th -7th Centuries AD. While many small temples have been ravaged by the climate and probably attacks from enemies, many temples still continue to exist with their beautiful architecture  and carvings. The huge granite stones by which the temples were built have also have started degenerating. The area is maintained neat and clean.

When we came out of the temples complex, I was accosted by a small boy of about 10 years with a small books with information  and photos of the temples. Since the information on the book were in Kannada language, which I can not read,  I asked for an English copy, which he collected from another and sold it to me. By the time,  another boy came and wanted to sell more photos to me. I told him No. But he was in no mood to leave me without selling the photos. He persuaded me so much with his eloquence and eagerness, which I could not resist. I had no other way but to purchase the same. He was happy and gave me a smile which I understood as both his satisfaction and thanks to me for buying the book..  Immediately it came to my mind that if our BSNL top-level management, executives, non-executives  and  all had learnt and practised the art of marketing from this small boy, we could have been winners in the telecom sector.

Next destination was Badami. After about half an hour we reached there. The comrades of the Telephone exchange were waiting there, who received and welcomed us by garlanding etc. Immediately we started for the Cave Temples. These temples are carved in the huge rocks which form the mountains. One has to climb up many steep steps carved in rocks to reach these temples. There are main three caves in the area which we visited. They have been carved on single rocks. Sufficient space is there for many people to sit and pray at the same time. The rocks are carved with the images of Vishnu, Siva etc. in several poses. I climbed up to the top-level, but some of our comrades preferred to sit in the way, instead of climbing all the steps.

These caves are said to be carved in the 5th century onwards. There are other hills nearby where also there are caves. There seems to be a fort  above the hills which helped observation and security.

After some time we reached Hospet Telephone Exchange, where our comrades were waiting. We were given a warm welcome. It was already 1930 hours and our train to Bangalore was at 2030 hours. Hence I suggested Com.Salakki to cancel our programme to visit Hampi. But the local comrades assured that we can just visit the Viroopaksha temple at Hampi , where Sivaratri celebrations were going on and return immediately.  I was not sure about that. Anyhow we started for Hampi. We reached there, saw the large number of people, visited the high Gopura and returned since there was hardly 20 minutes left for the departure of the train. Then it was a race to catch the train covering about 12 miles of  traffic filled road. We reached there exactly by 2000 hours, but there was no train. Of course as usual with the Railways, the train was late; late by 15 minutes. The train came, myself and wife got in to it, our comrades gave us packet of food and water bottles for the journey, and we left.

We thank  Com. C.K.Gundanna, Circle Secretary, Com.G.B.Salakki, AGS, Com. S.R.Nayak, District Secretary, Bijapur and all other comrades for their love and affection shown to us. But the comrades of Hospet made us to give assurance that we will come to  Hospet once again to visit the ruins of Hampi, the capital city of the great emperor, King Krishna Devarayar.

It was a great day for us. Thanks to our comrades of Karnataka.

Bijapur, it seems, is always in the forefront. Now it started the 10th Anniversary Celebrations from 1st March itself. CHQ BSNLEU has given the call to celebrate the anniversary which falls on 22nd March. Bijapur can not wait till that. They want to make the entire month on celebration.

The celebration started in the morning itself. Along with Com.GB Salakki, Asst. General Secretary, BSNLEU, Com.S.R.Nayak, District Secretary, Bijapur and other leaders we ( myself and my wife Pankajam),went to the orphanage for blind children, which is situated in the town itself. Sweets, Biscuits and fruits were given to them. They were mostly children below 14-15 years, boys and girls were there. They sang songs and the teacher showed us how the children learn through braille system. It was very poignant when they thanked us for the food and started eating them. I donated Rs. 500/  to the school. All over the country our comrades are undertaking such social responsibilities. It should continue.

Next we were taken to the office of the BSNLEU. A computer, donated by three comrades, was inaugurated by me. A procession was held from there to the Telephone Exchange where the celebration was taking place. It was a new experience for me in sitting a chariot in the procession, before which our comrades danced and enjoyed throughout the procession which took about more than one and half hours.

The pandal was full with about 1000 workers who included comrades from nearby stations.  Many people were standing outside the pandal who could not get  seats. Local trade union leaders, officers, circle union leaders and  the press  reporters were there. All the leaders on the dias were honoured. The celebration was inaugurated by me.  I spoke about our organisation, how it grew and the present position. I also spoke on the present situation of T.U. movement, our tasks and the attack on the working class by the government following the neo-liberal policies.

Coms. C.K.Gundanna, Circle Secretary, BP Narayana, Circle President, GB Salakki AGS, S.R.Nayk, Dist. Secretary, Shri Ravichandran, GM Bijapur and other leaders addressed. All congratulated the Bijapur comrades for the grand function.

Bijapur has always been with BSNLEU. It has more than 750 members in the whole division which has got a strength of about 900.

I congratulate the Bijapur comrades who under the leadership Com. G.B. Salakki has held the banner of BSNLEU high.

Once the verification is over, workers in large numbers are joining BSNL Employees Union. The flow has started in right earnest. Purushotham Gedam, Circle Secretary and Nallawade, ACS, congratulated all for the wise decision taken by the comrades.

Welcoming the new members, I congratulated them and stated that Satara will become one of our strong units with almost all workers joining the BSNLEU. I also explained our task in the present situation when BSNL is in a financial crisis due to the wrong policy and incapable management.

I was told by the Circle Union leaders, in many other divisions also, NFTE members have expressed their intention to join BSNLEU. A good development indeed.

The event will be celebrated throughout the country. I have been invited to attend the 10th year celebration at Bijapur on 1st March.  I have already reached Bijapur.

The Central Executive Committee of BSNLEU will be held at Chennai on 22nd to 24th March 2011 which also will celebrate the 10th Anniversary.

2G scam – Kanimozhi may be questioned.

It is reported in the press, that Ms. Kanimozhi, Member of Parliament and daughter of Karunanidhi may be questioned by CBI in connection with the 2G scam. She is having substantial shares in Kalaignar TV which is reported to have received kick back by one of the 2G licencee. But the DMK has denied that any kick back stating that it was a loan and the same has been returned. It is interesting that it was returned only recently after the 2G scam became a big issue.

Dirty tactics by contractors/ BSNL management

Tags

,

After the exploitation of the contract workers by the BSNL Management and Contractors was brought to the notice of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour by me and other comrades, both the management and contractors became jittery. Management was compelled to issue orders instructing the field level officers to ensure full payment, deduction towards EPF, Insurance etc. as provided under the rules.

But the contractors and field level officers, instead of paying the full wages are compelling the contract workers to sign letters stating that they have received full wages. Workers are threatened that if they do’nt sign, then they will  not be engaged. And these certificates are sent to corporated office as proof of payment of full wages. Contractors may go down to this kind of  loot and cover up. But have our officers no dignity and ethics to lower themselves to this low level tactis ?

Pension revision- Why this unnecessary delay?

The Secretary DOT assured that the order on Pension Revision will be issued by this month. There is only one working day in front of us in February now. Thousands of Pensioners are waiting  eagerly and the Member (Finance )is sitting on the file already approved by the Cabinet. How strange! Is the delay justified?
