Arun Jaitely, Finance Minister made a mess of economy – Yashwant Sinha, former Finance Minister and senior leader BJP

This is the statement issued by Yeswant Sinha, former Cabinet Minister and senior leader BJP:

” I shall be failing in my national duty if I did not speak up even now against the mess the finance minister has made of the economy. I am also convinced that what I am going to say reflects the sentiments of a large number of people in the BJP and elsewhere who are not speaking up out of fear.
Arun Jaitley is considered to be the best and the brightest in this government. It was a foregone conclusion before the 2014 elections that he would be the finance minister in the new government. His losing his Lok Sabha election from Amritsar was not allowed to come in the way of this appointment. One may recall that in similar circumstances Atal Bihari Vajpayee had refused to appoint Jaswant Singh and Pramod Mahajan, two of his closest colleagues in the party, to his cabinet in 1998. His indispensability was established further when the prime minister rewarded him not only by giving him the finance ministry including the department of disinvestment, but also the ministries of defence and corporate affairs. Four ministries in one go out of which he still retains three. I have handled the ministry of finance and know how much hard work there is in that ministry alone. Finance ministry, in the best of times, calls for the undivided attention of its boss if the job has to be properly done. In challenging times it becomes more than a 24/7 job. Naturally, even a superman like Jaitley could not do justice to the task.
Jaitley was, to begin with, a lucky finance minister, luckier than any in the post-liberalisation era. Depressed global crude oil prices placed at his disposal lakhs of crores of rupees. This unprecedented bonanza was waiting to be used imaginatively. The legacy problems like stalled projects and bank NPAs were no doubt there and should have been managed better like the crude oil bonanza. But the oil bonanza has been wasted and the legacy problems have not only been allowed to persist, they have become worse.
So, what is the picture of the Indian economy today? Private investment has shrunk as never before in two decades, industrial production has all but collapsed, agriculture is in distress, construction industry, a big employer of the work force, is in the doldrums, the rest of the service sector is also in the slow lane, exports have dwindled, sector after sector of the economy is in distress, demonetisation has proved to be an unmitigated economic disaster, a badly conceived and poorly implemented GST has played havoc with businesses and sunk many of them and countless millions have lost their jobs with hardly any new opportunities coming the way of the new entrants to the labour market. For quarter after quarter, the growth rate of the economy has been declining until it reached the low of 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal, the lowest in three years. The spokespersons of the government say that demonetisation is not responsible for this deceleration. They are right. The deceleration had started much earlier. Demonetisation only added fuel to fire.
And please note that the methodology for calculation of the GDP was changed by the present government in 2015 as a result of which the growth rate recorded earlier increased statistically by over 200 basis points on an annual basis. So, according to the old method of calculation, the growth rate of 5.7 per cent is actually 3.7 per cent or less.
Even the SBI, the largest public sector bank of the country, has stated with unusual frankness that the slowdown is not transient or “technical”, it is here to stay and the slowdown in demand has only aggravated the situation. It has openly contradicted what the BJP president said just a few days ago that the slowdown in the last quarter was on account of “technical” reasons and will be corrected soon. According to the SBI chairman, the telecom sector is the latest entrant to the long list of stressed sectors.
The reasons for this decline are not far to seek nor have they appeared suddenly. They have been allowed to accumulate over time to cause the present crisis. It was not difficult to anticipate them and take counter measures to deal with them. But that called for devoting time to the task, serious application of mind, understanding of the issues and then working out a game plan to tackle them. It was perhaps too much to expect from a person who was carrying the heavy burden of so many extra responsibilities. The results are there for all of us to see.
The prime minister is worried. A meeting convened by the prime minister with the finance minister and his officials appears to have been postponed indefinitely. The finance minister has promised a package to revive growth. We are all waiting with bated breath for this package. It has not come so far. The only new thing is the reconstituted Economic Advisory Council of the prime minister. Like the five Pandavas they are expected to win the new Mahabharat war for us.
The performance of the monsoon this year has not been flattering. This will further intensify rural distress. The farmers have received “massive” loan waivers from some state governments varying from one paise to a few rupees in some cases. Forty leading companies of the country are already facing bankruptcy proceedings. Many more are likely to follow suit. The SME sector is suffering from an unprecedented existential crisis. The input tax credit demand under the GST is a whopping Rs 65,000 crore against a collection of Rs 95,000 crore. The government has asked the income tax department to chase those who have made large claims. Cash flow problems have already arisen for many companies specially in the SME sector. But this is the style of functioning of the finance ministry now. We protested against raid raj when we were in opposition. Today it has become the order of the day. Post demonetisation, the income tax department has been charged with the responsibility of investigating lakhs of cases involving the fate of millions of people. The Enforcement Directorate and the CBI also have their plates full. Instilling fear in the minds of the people is the name of the new game.
Economies are destroyed more easily than they are built. It took almost four years of painstaking and hard work in the late nineties and early 2000 to revive a sagging economy we had inherited in 1998. Nobody has a magic wand to revive the economy overnight. Steps taken now will take their own time to produce results. So, a revival by the time of the next Lok Sabha election appears highly unlikely. A hard landing appears inevitable. Bluff and bluster is fine for the hustings, it evaporates in the face of reality.
The prime minister claims that he has seen poverty from close quarters. His finance minister is working over-time to make sure that all Indians also see it from equally close quarters.

Government has to take care of its Pensioners.

BSNL absorbed DOT Pensioners were recruited by DOT/Government and their pension is to be paid by Government. Pension revision is also the responsibility of the government.

The III PRC report is accepted by BSNL Management and is awaiting approval of BSNL Board. But in the case of Pensioners, the government can directly make the payment with 15% fitment from 01-01-2017.

Do not delay payment to Pensioners!

The meeting of all the unions / associations in BSNL held today to discuss about struggles to be organised against starting of Subsidiary Tower Company  and demanding Wage Revision is in the correct step. United struggles are most important in achieving both these crucial demands.

Banaras Hindu University agitation – 3 Additional City Magistrates and two policemen removed

The strong agitation against the lathi charge on women students who protested against eve-teasing in the university campus has compelled the UP Government to act. As part of this 3 city magistrates and two policemen has been removed from their posts. The students associations are continuing agitation that the Vice-Chancellor who is the cause of the lathi charge should vacate. AIDWA has also raised the same demand.

Hypocrisy of Fight against Corruption

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

Hypocrisy of Fight against Corruption

At the BJP’s National Executive, the Prime Minister thundered that “there would be no compromise or leniency on corruption”.

The CPI(M)’s position on fighting growing political corruption is well-known, both in its conduct and its concrete proposals to end this scourge.

The hypocrisy of the Prime Minister and the BJP government lies in the fact that while they are pursuing corruption cases against leaders of the opposition, this government in these three years has not even implemented the law enacted by the Parliament to establish the Lokpal.

There is no step being taken by this government to investigate scams like Vyapam; Srijan housing scam in Bihar; the Birla-Sahara diaries; the Panama papers; the Lalit Modi case; the mining scandal in Karnataka that led to the resignation of BJP Chief Minister in the state; land grab case by BJP leaders in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand; PDS scam in Chattisgarh; the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) scam etc. etc. The list of corruption scams in BJP ruled states goes on and on. Yet there is no investigation in any one of these.

Clearly, the Prime Minister’s exhortations are a cover to selectively choose cases against political opponents in the name of fighting corruption while protecting his own party and governments who are involved in allegations of huge corruption at high places.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) demands that all such allegations must be subject to an impartial enquiry and action be taken against the guilty.

BJP continuing ‘Encounter Politics’ – Brinda Karat

In a hard hitting article in The Hindu today, Com.Brinda Karat, PBM of CPI(M), has exposed the strategy of the BJP and its encounter politics.

She writes “Anything and everything is legitimate (for the BJP) to grab power. It is a version of ‘Encounter Politics’ – what is being encountered is ethics, morality, principles, truth, honesty and even national interest.” How true! She was writing on the murder of Santanu Bhowmik, the young journalist and progressive writer of Tripura, who exposed the BJP, Sangh Parivar and the extremists, who are trying to divide the tribal and nor-tribal people in the state and was murdered two days back.

Govt. reconstitutes Economic Advisory Council

The deep decline of the economic situation in the country, especially after the demonetisation, GST  etc., has compelled the Modi Government to accept the grim situation. Now the government has reconstituted the Economic Advisory Council with NITI Ayog Member and economist Bibek Debroy as the Chairman.

It is not due to the lack of Commissions that the economy has gone down. It is the anti-worker and anti-people Capitalist Corporate Policy ( I would prefer to use this, instead of Neo-Liberal Policy) which the government is implementing that is causing the economic slow down. Until and unless it is changed, only the worst will come, constitution of new committee or reconstitution.

Festival season approaching – Where is the Bonus for BSNL employees?

Tags

,

Bonus is the deferred wage. There was no Bonus for government employees till 1977. Sustained struggles were fought by the Railways and Central government employees for Bonus, including the historic Railway Strike of 1974. It was only after the Janata Government came in to power that Bonus was granted.

The government has announced Bonus for Railway, Postal and other central establishments for 2017, though it is below the demand of the employees. But BSNL employees, who were central government employees earlier, have not been granted the same so far, despite demand from the unions. The Festival season has started and the delay in announcing the same is unjustified.

We demand the BSNL management to announce the Bonus for employees at the earliest.

Stop Privatisation of Railways

Tags

,

The Central government is moving to hand over some Railway lines and running of some trains to private players. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal stated that it will increase competition and improve customer satisfaction.

This move is dangerous and against the interest of the people. The British Government in India has taken over the Railways from East India Company and has been running it as a government department. It is the biggest organisation in the country covering the entire nation and serving crores of people every day. Railways have its weakness and inefficiency, which necessarily has to be attended to. The poor people use it for their travel at low cost. It connects the entire country, which is used for travel by people as also for transporting goods.

Already the government has started process of privatisation of Railway Station in the name of modernization, through  which the private companies will be able to monetise the land near stations for malls and business purposes and garner huge profits. Just like the private airports like Delhi, Mumbai etc. the cost for every thing inside the Stations will increase.

Any privatisation of Railways is going to increase the travel and transportation charges which will be beyond the ability of the ordinary people to bear. May be better conveniences will be arranged for those who can pay, but trains will be out of reach of the poor people. Prices of all commodities will increase because of the increase in transportation charges. Competition by private companies are sure to increase accidents and derangement as in the case of road traffic.  The move of privatisation of Railways is most dangerous and anti-national.

When the British Government privatised their Railways, the service became inefficient and costly resulting in agitation demanding take over by the government. If that is the state in a small country like England, what will be the situation in a large country like India?

Mighty strong protest actions are required against this anti-people move of the government.

U.P. again – This time it is lathi charge against Girl Students.

Lady students were lathi charged and manhandled by male police while they were protesting at the prestigious Benares Hindu University against  molestation of lady students. Varanasi (Benares) is the constituency from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected. Gorakhpur, from where hundreds of children died due to lack of Oxygen, is the constituency of Yogi Adityanath, who is the Chief  Minister of U.P.

Shame on the UP government!
