World Peace Council Decisions

The World Peace Council has decided that it  will observe the coming period amongst others, the following important activities:

  • 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki(6&9 August)
  • The 10th August, international Day of the victims of “Agent Orange” in cooperation with the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange (VAVA)
  • The 70th anniversary of the liberation of Korea in 1945
  • The VI.Trilateral Meeting of Peace Movements of Cyprus, Turkey and Greece from September 18-20 in Larnaka
  • To dedicate the 21st September this year to the affirmation of the WPC to the struggle for Peace and against NATO, its further expansion and aggressive plans.
  • Strengthen the international campaign against the NATO and undertake actions to protest the military exercise “Trident Juncture” in Portugal, Spain and Italy (from end September till beginning November);
  • To support the campaign for the boycott of products from the Israeli settlements in Palestine, as an act of solidarity with the just cause of the Palestinian people
  • Continue to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Victory over Nazi-Fascism;
  • Commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the WPC, value it’s role and intervention and the urgency and timeliness of the struggle for Peace;Commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Stockholm Appeal and the timeliness of the struggle for the abolition of nuclear weapons;

    Commemorate 65 years from the beginning  of USA’s aggression against Korea (25 June 1950 – 27 July 1953).

  • Commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the UN Charter;
  • Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Helsinki’s Final Act.

WFTU oppose the close co-rdination of Govt. of Greece with Israel

the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has expressed its strong reservation and protest against the intensification of co-operation between Greece and Israel. An expert from the statement is reproduced below:

“The WFTU considers the intensification of the cooperation between Greece and Israel not only dangerous for the Palestinian people who are daily suffering from the Israeli Occupation. This co-operation is dangerous for the general peace around the Mediterranean Sea. Mediterranean Sea is threatened by this new development. This is part of the  imperialist plan  for Higher share from the exploitation of the wealth-producing resources.

The military relationship of Greece with Israel not only undermines the Palestinian People and the  people of Lebanon, of Syria, of the whole North Africa and Promotes the studs of the Imperialists for the so called New Middle East.

The WFTU demands  the Greek Government to vote in the Greek Parliament the recognition of the Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as capital as per the borders of 1967 to denounce the Israeli Occupation  and to end the military cooperation and the training jointly with Israel.

Also, the WFTU demands the cancellation of the plan of Offering of a Greek Island to NATO, to use as wide military base.”

British M.P. supports the demand to return Kohinoor Diamond to India.

Member of Parliament of UK, Keith Vaz has supported the demand of India for the return of the Kohinoor Diamond, which was taken away by the British during their regime in India. Indian origin Kenneth Vaz stated that he supports the demand and it is appropriate that the Kohinoor be given back during the scheduled visit of Prime Minister Modi to England in November 2015. The Kohinoor Diamond, stated to be the biggest in the world, decorated the throne of the Mughal Emperors.

Not only the Kohinoor, but the precious antiques and the historical memorials taken away by the British should be returned to India. These are part of the Indian history and should be with India.

The 62nd Anniversary of Cuban Revolution was celebrated in Cuba on 26th July 2015.

Santiago De Cuba, Jul 26 Cuba marked the anniversary of Fidel Castro’s first armed uprising 62 years ago today with calls for an end to the US embargo and the return of the US naval base at Guantanamo.

The ceremony — attended by Cuban president Raul Castro and some 10,000 of the country’s ruling elite and their guests but not by the frail 88-year-old Fidel — was the first since the restoration of relations with the United States.

“Now begins a long and complex road toward the normalisation of bilateral relations, which includes, among other things, the end of the blockade and the return of the Guantanamo naval base,” said Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, the number two of Cuba’s communist party.

Cuba, US restore diplomatic relations

Cuba and US have restored their diplomatic relations today, 20th July 2015 after five decades. The breaking off the relations at the time of John F. Kennedy, President US and Fidel Castro, President Cuba is restored now. US broke the relations on the plea of Cuba’s closeness with Communist USSR.

Between this period, the isolation of Cuba changed and most of the countries in the Latin America as well as in the continent restored friendly relations with Cuba. US was almost isolated. This was one important reason for the compulsion for US to change its stance. However, still there are many critics in the US against this decision taken by President Barak Obama.

We heartily welcome the present restoration of the diplomatic relations between US and Cuba.

Protest against Austerity Measures in Greece

The following report from Athens, Greece indicates that the people are not happy with the bailout plan signed between Greece and Eurozone and there are strong protests from the party of the Prime Minister itself. The situation seems to be grim. It has to be seen how the Tsipras Government is going to face the revolt within its own party.

“Athens, Jul 15 Anti-austerity protesters hurled petrol bombs at police guarding the Greek parliament today as MPs debated deeply unpopular reforms they need to vote in to clear the way for a eurozone rescue of Greece’s failing economy.

Riot police used tear gas to push back dozens of hooded protesters and secure the area in front of the parliament building after the demonstrators’ Molotov cocktails set ablaze parts of Syntagma square in central Athens.

The street violence reflected broad public anger at measures now backed by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras despite a July 5 referendum rejecting near-identical terms from Greece’s creditors.

Tsipras is facing a revolt over the reforms from his radical left ruling Syriza party, which came to power in January on anti-austerity promises (AFP)”

MNCs and Corporates retrench large number of workers.

Microsoft, one of the biggest software company, in the world is planning to retrench more employees after its earlier decision to retrench 18,000 employees last year. Another MNC, Nokia, has also similar plans. In a world of increasing unemployment, the job cuts and retrenchment will make the situation worse. (Based on a report in Business Line)

Thousands of workers and people demonstrated in Athens in support of  ‘NO’ to the bail out conditions of the European Union and against austerity measures. The people and the toiling masses are fed up with the restrictions put by by the European Union in connection with the bail out proposals for Greece.

The people of Greece has voted a ‘NO’ with 61. 3% in the referendum against the bail-out plan of European union, which stipulates austerity, cutting of social expenditure etc. We congratulate the people of Greece for heir bold decision.

The statement issued by the CPI(M) in this connection is reproduced below:

New Delhi, July 6: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), now in session at Delhi, has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) warmly congratulates the people of Greece who have given a resounding “No” verdict in the referendum.  With a 61.3 per cent vote, the Greek people have resoundingly rejected the bailout austerity measures sought to be imposed upon them by the neo-liberal forces represented by the Troika comprising the IMF, European Central Bank and the European Commission.

The European Union and the Troika will have to heed the voice of the Greek people and their democratic verdict.

4th July, Independence Day of US

“The Declaration of Independence is the statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as thirteen newly independent sovereign states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. Instead they formed a new nation—the United States of America. ”

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” ( From the Declaration of American Independence 4th July 1776).

US got independence fighting against British. One part of the Declaration of Independence in quoted above. But the past history of about 70 years shows that rulers of USA have forgotten its own Declaration. How many countries they had attacked and how much military help they had given to some other countries to continue aggression is well known.

On this anniversary of Declaration of Independence, we greet the people of US. We also hope that the process of improving relations with Cuba will be carried forward to its logical conclusion.
