Fidel Castro

Though 88 and resting,  Fidel Castro has a lot to say. It is correct; the Revolutionary Leader is still an inspiration for the entire world, which waits to hear him. A report about his meeting with French President Francois Hollande who called upon him at Havana, Cuba.

Havana, May 12 : French President Francois Hollande called today for an end to the US embargo on Cuba, as he met with Fidel Castro during the first visit by a Western leader since  Washington and Havana moved to restore ties.

Hollande said France will do whatever possible to see that “the measures that have so badly  harmed Cuba’s development can finally be lifted” ahead of meetings with Fidel and his younger brother Raul Castro, the duo who have ruled Cuba since its 1959 revolution.

Hollande met first with a smiling Fidel, the iconic 88-year-old father of the revolution, who he said still “had a lot to say”. Castro wore a black and white sweat suit over a checked shirt in contrast to the military fatigues that were his trademark before he yielded power to his younger brother in 2006.

Hollande called Fidel a figure of historic stature.

Anti-Fascism Day, WFTU

The World Federation of Trade Unions honors the 70 years since the Antifascist Victory of the peoples on 9 May 2015.

A high-level delegation of the WFTU is participating in the celebrations in Moscow, Russia to pay their respects to the people and the heroic working class of the Soviet Union who sacrificed the most with more than 20 million dead in the war against Nazism and Fascism.

9 May is a symbol of the great victory over Fascism and Nazism which in the times of the II World War seemed impossible to many. However, the enormous military power of German and the Fascist Axis (Italy and Japan) despite the immense support received by the German and International Monopolies were defeated by the organized resistance of the peoples and the role played by the Soviet Union -who at that time was in a temporary alliance with the USA, France and Britain.

The II World War was a result of the great intensification of the contradictions and the competitiveness between the capitalist states over the natural resources, the markets and the redistribution of the control over the world. (WFTU Report)

Bandung (Indonesia), Apr 24 :The distance of 100 meters may not be that long but when over 90 world leaders including 22 Heads of State march in tandem to relive a 60-year old historical conference espousing human rights, sovereignty and equality, the occasion becomes momentous.

Delegates from nearly 90 countries today marched from 131-year old Hotel Savoy here to another historical location “Gedung Merdeka”, which had hosted the 1955 Bandung Conference in which 25 countries including India, under the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru participated.

The purpose was to commemorate 60th anniversary of the Bandung Conference and reiterate its values.

Gedung Merdeka (building of Independence) which has now been converted into a museum has laid out same chairs of dignitaries today which were laid out 60 years ago.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe were among the some leaders walking on the lane dotted with Dutch heritage buildings. (PTI)

Cuba, US

It was only  two years after Cuban Revolution in 1959 and formation of Communist Government headed by Comrade Fidel Castro that US imperialists made a well planned attack at Bay of Pigs to defeat and destabilise the Communist government. However, the attack was defeated by the Cuban people and the government. It was on 17th April 1961, 54 years back.

Now both Cuban President Raul Castro and US President Barak Obama has agreed to restore diplomatic relations which has been withdrawn by both countries decades back. Let us hope that the relations will further improve.

minimum wge, Protest by US workers

It was an unusual sight in the New York and other major cities of US. Thousands of low paid workers in fast food, airport, construction, child care educational institutions etc. participated in protest demonstrations demanding increase in minimum wage, pointing out that the present wages are completely insufficient.

At present the minimum wage is $ 8.75 in an hour. The workers are demanding $ 15 an hour to escape from poverty. The authorities are proposing to increase the minimum wage to $ 9, which is rejected by the workers.

US President Barak Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro in the same Stage

Obama CastroPanama City, Apr 11 : US President Barack Obama and Cuba’s Raul Castro stood near each other at a Summit of the Americas, marking a major milestone in their efforts to end decades of animosity.

Obama and Castro, separated by the presidents of Ecuador and El Salvador, stood in the second of three rows at a Panama City convention center yesterday as the country’s national anthem was sung.

The sight of Obama and Castro in the same room instantly became a potent symbol of their bid to renew diplomatic ties that were severed in 1961. It was the first time that a Cuban leader attended the summit in its 21-year history.

Both smiling broadly, Obama and Castro had arrived separately for the two-day summit’s inauguration.

The 30-odd leaders were then heading to a seaside dinner in a complex of ruins dating from the era of the Spanish conquistadors.

Obama and Castro met once before, when they already shook hands at Nelson Mandela’s funeral in December 2013. But US officials said the widely-anticipated discussion would take place today. (AFP)
