Italy, strike

Friday was a day of anti-government protests and strikes across Italy. While metalworkers’ FIOM Union staged a walkout in northern Italy, the base union COBAS called a 24-hour nationwide public transport industrial action, causing severe disruption in many Italian cities.

Smaller unions representing public sector researchers and private firm workers were also present in the strikes and demonstrations. And all of them were angry at the government’s labor reforms and harsh budget measures. Violence has been recorded in Padua and Milan. Several policemen were injured when a group of protesters tried to climb the Colosseum in Rome. While trains and buses have stopped running and planes have idled on tarmacs and much of Italy slipped into a state of temporary paralysis, thousands of students have gathered in central Rome to protest against the planned education reform. Students are accusing the government of wanting to destroy public free education, turning schools into factories for the job market. The Rome demonstration also featured people demanding greater social housing. Migrants and refugees were also angry about the government as well as the European Union’s migration policies which they described as draconian. (Courtesy: Ganashakti)

Greece: Palestine solidarity activity held by PAME and WFTU
01 Aug 2014
GREECE, PALESTINE, SOLIDARITY

On July 31st, the All Workers Militant Front (PAME) of Greece and the WFTU held in Athens, Greece, at the national football stadium of Aegaleo, a massive event of solidarity with the People of Palestine. The act of solidarity was attended buy thousands of workers and included a solidarity soccer match and cultural acts.

Valentin Pacho Quispe, Deputy General Secretary of the WFTU, the consul of the Palestinian Authority in Greece Mohhamed Abu Apha, Yota Tavoulari, president of the Federation of Pharmaceutical workers of Greece and Mohamed Iqnaibi, representative of the General Union of Palestinian Workers (GUPW) were present and addressed the meeting. Also, the Federation of Palestinian Women sent a solidarity message that was read during the activity.

The WFTU was represented by Valentin Pacho Quispe, who delivered the following address:

“I’m here with you on behalf of the World Federation of Trade Unions to express the feeling of the 90 million workers from the 5 continents of solidarity with the people of Palestine and energetic condemnation of the genocide against the Palestinian brothers perpetrated by the imperialist government of Israel.

The working class and the peoples of the world, with great indignation hold large demonstrations condemning the criminal government of Israel. The unions affiliated to the WFTU on every continent hold actions of solidarity with the Palestinian people and demand punishment for those responsible -for government of Israel- for crimes against humanity.

Also, many governments – by the demand of the workers in Latin America, as my country Peru, have withdrawn their ambassadors from Israel in an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people and protest against the criminal actions of the Zionist government of Israel.

The people of Palestine are not alone, they have the solidarity of the peoples of the world. WFTU condemns the imperialist governments of the United States and the countries of the European Union, these hypocrites who shamelessly support the Zionist and racist government of Israel.

The struggle and resistance of the Palestinian people will be victorious. Because when you fight for a just cause, it ends in victory. So the WFTU will always stand by the Palestinian people, until they gain their own independent and sovereign Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem.

Honor and glory to the resistance of the Palestinian people!
Long live international solidarity!”

2,20,000 Railway Workers in S.Africa are on strike demanding increase in pay. The Unions did not agree to the meagre increase of 10% for 2014, 9.5 % in 2015 and 9% next year. The strike is a big success. We demand the S.African government to discuss and settle the demands of the railway workers.

UK workers strike

The massive strike of lakhs of government employees in Britain, North Ireland and Wales on 10th June was a great shock to the government. The striking government employees, teachers and others organised huge demonstrations in front of Trafalgar Square and also before the British Parliament, at Cambridge and other places. In these demonstrations, members of the India Workers Association also participated.
Consequent to the recession and also to the capitalist form of economy where the corporates and MNCs are favoured, the workers have been completely neglected. No wage increase have been given since 2010. The real value of the wages has gone down more than 15% according to the trade unions. The prolonged discussion between the unions and the government did not reach anywhere and hence the strike.
The biggest Public Sector Union Unison, Public and commercial Service union, GMB United, Fire Brigade union and others organised the strike.
Our wholehearted support and solidarity to the striking workers of UK!

Support Palestine against Israel attacks

A Message from Mexico TUs

Approximately a month ago, Zionist occupation forces continue the policy of repression and torture against our people in all Palestinian towns and villages, arresting hundreds of people and increasing the number of prisoners to 6,000 arrests. Israeli settlers, under the protection of the army, have violent crimes such as kidnappings, murders and trampling against Palestinians. The crime of kidnapping teenager Mohammed Abu Khudair and his violent death, when he was burned alive, confirms without doubt the brutality of Israel. The Zionist criminal policy is attacking Gaza. Are barbaric attacks against our people, bombing, killing and injuring dozens of Palestinian civilians.

The Committees of the Democratic Palestine – Brazil accounts for Brazilian public opinion:

What is happening in the Palestinian territories is a continuation of the occupation and Zionist colonialism, based on ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people since 1948, when it committed massacres and expulsion of over 800,000 Palestinians who were living in refugee camps in diaspora. Today, there are 6 million refugees living in neighboring countries and in Palestine itself, denying them the right to return to their homes and their ancient lands.

Since 1967 assault, which resulted in the occupation of the rest of the Palestinian territories, the Zionist entity practicing the policy of cofisco land, reaching 60% of the total area of the West Bank, with costruções more settlements for Jewish settlers administered by the Zionist Movement World. Also confiscated more than 80% of water and more than 250,000 Palestinians were arrested, including children and women, with accusations of struggle for independence and rejeitação occupation. Today, the data show that are 6,000 political prisoners in Zionist prisons.

The Zionist entity “Israel” continues its blockade on the Gaza Strip, bombing and practicing war crimes, killing and injuring hundreds of innocent civilians. Over the past six years has waged conflicts and destroyed life in Gaza.

The Zionist entity “Israel” continues its policy of racial discrimination against the Palestinian people. The construction of the apartheid wall is a policy of discrimination that was rejected and condemned by the International Court of Justice based in The Hague and other international institutions.

Since the occupation in 1967, the Zionist entity “Israel” strengthened the policy of “Judaization of Jerusalem”, modifying and falsifying the cultural and historical features of the city to deny the existence of the Palestinians and the history of the Holy City.

The State of Israel advocates immigration of Jews from all over the world to Palestine in order to exploit the riches of the Arab region and the Middle East, contributing to the design of the Zionist movement and world imperialism. The fragmentation of the Arab region is necessary for deploying the Zionist expansion of the Jewish state, with its territory from the Nile (Egypt) to the Euphrates River (Iraq). Therefore, the ethnic cleansing against the peoples of the region becomes indispensable.

The Committees of the Democratic Palestine emphasizes that the Palestinian people struggle to get rid of the Zionist occupation and return to his homeland to build their democratic Palestinian state in the whole national territory.

The Committees of the Democratic Palestine ask the Jewish communities in Brazil that do not send their children to the State of Israel. These migrations mean more confiscation of Palestinian land for settlements settlers. Israel is a military and all its citizens, immigrants or born in Israel, states are required to perform military service. Thus, migrants strengthen the Israeli army and are involved in various kinds of repressions and abuses against the Palestinian people.

The resistance against the occupation is a legitimate right of the Palestinians according to the UN resolutions. Resistance is a legitimate way to win and historical rights and end the occupation, the right of return and the establishment of a democratic Palestinian state in the whole national territory.

We need the international solidarity. Campaigns of solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people in Brazil and throughout Latin America are vital to strengthen Palestinian rights and end the occupation, with legal punishment of criminals. We encourage BDS actions of important campaign. The academic boycott, disruption of military agreements and technological developments are ways to weaken the Israeli foreign policy and are also a way to denounce the atrocities committed against the Palestinians, as did the World Union of Journalists, expelling the representative of “Israel “this international entity, an example to be followed.

Protecting our people is part of the agenda of those who love peace and stability in the region is justice and peace for the world.

Anti-worker budget, Australia

Australia’s Tony Abbot Government is on an Austerity Move and has brought an Austerity Budget. Its budget deficit has reached a deficit of $ 68 billion. It now is putting the entire burden on the workers and pensioners. The present budget will result in:

1. Pension Age increasing to 70 with 30% of people dying before 70
2. Slashing $80 Billion from the states Health and Education
3. Changing indexation for calculating the pension which will produce lower increases which could see some pensioners living below the poverty line.
4. Introducing a $7 co-payment to see the GP which is the thin edge of the wedge to bring in a user pay system similar to the US ” if you haven’t got the money too bad”.

The Australian workers have decided to fight and defeat this anti-worker, anti-pensioner budget.

(PLF) Demanded to raise the pension as Announcement by the Government

Pakistan Labour Federation Founder/Secretary General Haji Muhammad Saeed Arian has said that despite Federal Government announcement of raise in pension in 2013-14 budget EOBI (Employees Old Age Benefit Institution) management has not raised it to Rs5,000 from Rs3,600 which should have taken effect from July 2013. In a statement issued here July 3 he said that similarly in 2014-Federal Minister raised pension to Rs6,000 but such directives are not issued for EOBI which may enable workers to get Rs6,000. He said that it appears that workers were first deprived of Rs5,000 and they would continue to be deprived of Rs6,000 as well.He said that Government is basically against workers and it is regrettable that not a single member of National Assembly has the guts to ask Federal Finance Minister why the raise in pension of 2013-14 is not allowed to workers and what kind of legislation is being done now to ensure increase in pension of workers for 2014-15. He said that sitting EOBI chairman is not taking action. He demanded of Government to ensure payment of pension as per announcement made in last two years should be given to workers.
A meeting of Pension Claimants Action Committee which was held here under chairmanship of Haji Muhammad Saeed Arian condemned anti workers attitude of EOBI The meting noted that applications of affected people for pension claim are pending and it’s a fake announcement that pensions would be paid in 45 days.
The meeting said that claims are filed one to two years back but no decision is taken It said that ever-since presence head has taken over the charge situation has aggravated and he has even issued directives not to issue claim forms, depriving workers of their rights.
