Central TUs Strongly Oppose closure of PSUs

Protest, PSU Closure

The decision of the government to close sick PSUs has been condemned and strongly opposed by the Central Trade Unions. They have stated that there is no justification for the closure and the decision should be rescinded. They also suggested that these PSUs can be revived, if the government changes its policies.

The government earlier decided to close about 25 PSUs which are in loss, including BSNL and MTNL. In the first stage, it proposes to close PSUs, viz. HMT Watches, HMT Chinar Watches, Hindustan Cables, Hindustan Photo Films, HMT Bearings and Tungabhadra Steel Products. There are about 3,600 employees who will lose their jobs if the companies are closed.

The move of the government is only to close the PSUs, one after another to favour the corporates and private business and also to help them to increase their profits and eliminate competition from the PSUs.

The strong position taken by the Central Trade Unions should be supported by the entire trade union movement in the country. The National Protest Day on 5th December 2014 called for by the 11 Central Trade Unions should  be made a gigantic protest movement by participation of crores and crores of workers from all industries, central/state government employees, PSUs etc.

We demand that the government should drop the proposal to close the PSUs; instead its should take urgent action to revive these loss making PSUs.

CITU Calls for Continuity Of Protest Action On 24th November Against Privatisation Of Coal Sector

CITU, Coal workers strike

From India News Network(INN)

New Delhi, November 23: CITU calls upon coal workers to protest against nefarious game plan of the government of India to commence the process of denationalization of coal mining through the promulgation of Ordinance containing enabling provision for allowing private sector in commercial mining of coal. CITU also calls upon the coal workers and their unions/federations irrespective of affiliations to organize “work stoppage” for two hours” in all the coal mines/establishments in the country on 24th November 2014 and hold massive militant demonstration to voice their determination not to allow handing over of the coal mines to private corporates, both domestic and foreign, for commercial mining.

CITU resents the manner the joint strike call in coal industry on 24th November 2014 has been postponed/deferred by some of the federations only on the basis of so called vague assurance of Joint Secretary of coal ministry on his effort to arrange meeting between the federations and the government, when the Ordinance initiating the process of aggressive denationalization of coal mining is already put in the track of implementation and the time of auctioning of coal blocks has been more or less finalized.

Similar assurance given to the federations on arranging meeting with minister by the CIL management and the bureaucracy only one and half month back did not materialize. In view of the Ordinance already put in implementation track, which, inter alia, grossly tampered and altered the basic provisions of Coal Nationalised Act 1973, the joint one day strike call of 24th November 2014 by four federations in coal industry was envisaged as a protest action, preparatory to higher struggle for resistance to the aggressive move for denationalization/ privatization of coal mining sector by the coal workers. There is no justification for withdrawal/postponement/deferment of said protest strike merely on the basis of assurance of meeting with government more so when such assurance has already been violated only a month back.

CITU led All India Coal Workers’ Federation has rightly opposed such postponement of strike and refused to endorse the conclusions of the meeting between the federations and the ministry officials held 22nd November 2014 at New Delhi. The AICWF while opposing such decision of withdrawal/postponement of strike decided to hold two hour work stoppage and massive demonstration in coal industry on the same day on 24th November 2014.

CITU calls upon the coal workers and their unions irrespective of affiliations to keep the continuity of the protest action on while observing work-stoppage for two hours and massive demonstration in all the coal mines and establishments on 24th November and prepare for united resistance struggle against the government move for denationalization of coal industry and privatization/disinvestment in the days to come.

M.P. Government moves for issue of Ordinance to curtail labour laws

Central Trade Unions, Labour Laws, M.P.

The BJP Government of Madhya Pradesh is on the move to issue an ordinance to curtail the existing labour laws in favour of the employers. It is in the model of the amendments passed by the Rajasthan Government.

In this case, these include amendments to the Industrial Disputes Act, Factories Act and the Contract Labour Act. Since the proposed ordinance involves changes to legislation passed by Parliament, the President’s prior assent is needed.

The proposed changes in the Industrial Disputes Act would allow companies in the state which employ up to 300 people to retrench workers or shut down the establishment without government approval. Earlier, only companies with less than 100 employees were allowed to do so.

Similar changes were enacted by the Rajasthan Government and was approved by the President on November 7.

One after another the state governments and the Central government ruled by BJP are aggressively trying to sabotage and change the labour laws against the workers and in favour of the employers.

One of the main demands of the National Protest Day on 5th December called by the 11 Central Trade Unions is against the change of labour laws against the interests of the workers.

Com. A.K.Padmanabhan, President, CITU has strongly protested against the anti-worker move of the M.P. Government.

The Govt. should take over the Chennai Nokia Plant

Chennai, closure, Nokia

Nokia, one of the top manufacturers of mobile phones, has decided to close its factory at Chennai, which will cause loss of jobs of about twenty five thousand workers of the factory.

We demand the government either to compel the management of Nokia to continue the production or the government itself should take over the factory and run the same so that the livelihood of the workers can be protected. The trade unions in the factory including CITU has already raised this reasonable demand.

Immediate action is required.

Do not put EPF corpus in Stock Markets, Don’t Destroy the Future of Pensioners

EPF

The proposal of the Finance ministry to put the hard earned Employees Provident Fund in the stock market is completely wrong and is only intended to utilise the hard earned money of the workers and pensioners to maximise the profit of the corporates and big business, instead of safeguarding the interests of the employees. What will happen if the funds are deposited in the shares of King Fischer Airlines, Satyam Computers etc. which collapsed?

We strongly protest against the move and demand the insane proposal should be scrapped.

‘Corporate Raj’ instead of ‘Inspector Raj’ ?

Labour Reforms

The corporate and big business have been continuously complaining about ‘Inspector Raj’, meaning that the government labour officers are unnecessarily interfering in labour disputes and also checking whether the labour laws are implemented or not. But the reality is something else. It is only in very rare cases that there is effective intervention, since the corporates and high level employers are able to influence the ruling parties and politicians and weaken the labour officers’ intervention.

Now the BJP, which was fully supported by gigantic contributions in the elections by the corporates, have started repaying them through the so called ‘labour reforms’, after forming the new government with massive majority. ‘Labour Reforms’ are being implemented which are not labour oriented by employer oriented. The right for inspection of the labour officers to find out whether labour laws are being implemented is curtailed, employers are being given the freedom for hire and fire etc. A majority of the unorganised workers are going to be out of the labour and social security benefits, if the amendments moved in the Parliament are passed.

The trade unions and the workforce are in real danger of losing what they have gained through decades of struggles. They realise the grim situation. That is why all the 11 Central Trade Unions have been jointly organising agitational programmes and strikes during the past five years. The National Convention of Workers held on 15 September 2014 in New Delhi has called for a National Protest Day on 5th December 2014 to expose and oppose the anti-worker reforms that is being imposed and also demanding acceptance of the 10 Point Charter of Demands raised by the Central Trade Unions. The entire workforce in the country should join these programmes being organised by the trade unions and the message should reach each and every worker in the country inspiring them and making them to join this great movement.

Central Trade Unions Protest anti-worker amendment toLabour laws

09 Saturday Aug 2014

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in BSNLEU, TU News - India

All the 11 Central Trade Unions has strongly protested the government’s move to amend the labour and trade union laws to suit the requirements of the corporates and employers in a Joint Press Statement. The NDA government has introduced Factories (Amendment) Bill 2014 and Apprentices (Amendment) Bill 2014 on 8th August in the Parliament which curtails the rights of the workers. This includes removing the ban on night shift to the women employees. The Members of the Parliament belonging to the opposition including CPI(M) have strongly objected to the bill being moved.
The Rajasthan Govt. had already moved amendment for labour laws increasing the number of workers for the eligibility of EPF, union formation etc.

The government has also decided to increase FDI in Defence, Railways and Insurance, though the Insurance (Amendment) Bill is yet to be moved due to lack of numbers in the Rajya Sabha for the government.
The 11 Central trade Unions, including BMS, INTUC, HMS, AITUC, CITU, UTUC etc. has strongly protested these anti-worker moves and have decided to organise a ‘National Protest Convention’ in the first week of September 2014. The National Federations of various sector of employees will also be part of this convention. This will discuss and decide the Programme of Action.

BSNLEU has always been part of this great workers’ movement.

147 Maruti Workers still in Jail in connection with 2012 incident

07 Thursday Aug 2014

147 workers of Maruti -Suzuki company are still jail in connection with the incident in the factory premises on 18th July 2012, in which one officer was killed and many workers were injured.
As per reports in the press, the evidences brought in the court against these workers clearly indicates that they are cooked up and fabricated. The contractors are the witnesses and they have given names of workers alphabetically. A report in ‘Hindu’ clearly indicates that the workers have been charged in the case picking up leaders of the union. The jailed workers are not even granted bail.
This is a conspiracy between the Maruti Management and Haryana state government. Despite strong protests and agitations by CITU and other trade unions in the area, the Haryana State government has not taken any action to diffuse the situation.
Our full support and solidarity to the Maruti Workers, who are fighting for justice.
