The Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations in its meeting held on 7th January has called upon the BSNL workers to organise demonstrations in all SSAs/Circles and Corporate Office on 8th January  in support of the striking  coal workers protesting against the Coal Ordinance which aims for disinvest/privatisation of coal sector.

A strong message should go to the government from all workers in the country that they will not allow the precious coal sector to be privatised /disinvested.

Organise the demonstration with mass participation.

At the call of the five  national federations of coal workers affiliated to various Central Trade Unions, seven lakh workers in the coal mines under Coal India Ltd and Singareni Coal Mines  have gone on total strike from January 6.  This total strike in the coal sector is to protest against the ordinance promulgated by the Government of India leading to  denationalization of coal mining in the country.

The Polit Bureau congratulates and greets the coal workers for building up total unity and for a successful strike.  The CPI(M) fully supports the demand of the workers to withdraw the coal mines ordinance.

Coal strike

The Five Days Strike called by the trade unions in Coal India Limited, against privatisation and disinvestment of the coal sector has started today, 6th January  and will continue till 10th January 2015. 5 lakh workers are on strike and the production in the coal sector has been completely stopped.

The coal  workers and theri unions are demanding the scrapping of the Coal Mines (Special Provisions ) Ordinance 2014 and also withdrawing the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Bill, which aims at denationalisation of the coal sector and its disinvestment. The bill could not be passed in the Parliament, and after the session, ordinance to the effect has been issued after the session was over.

We support the fully justified strike of the coal workers and demand the government to cancel the Ordinance which is completely against the interest of the country and its people.

Support and solidarity to Coal Workers Strike.

Coal workers strike

Five lakh coal workers are going on strike for 5 days from tomorrow, 6th January 2015, against the government decision to de-nationalisation of Coal sector and grant of coal block allotment to the private sector. The Coal sector unions have boycotted the talks called by the government, since the latter is going with the privatisation programme. An Ordinance which  inter alia moves for privatisation/disinvestment is already issued. This big rofit making sector is going to be gifted to the corporates. It can not be allowed.

This is not a fight of the coal workers and their unions alone. It is a fight of the entire working class in the country against the neo-liberalisation, which brings more and more misery to the workers and common people.

The Central Trade Unions have called upon all the unions/associations to extend support and solidarity to the striking workers by holding demonstrations and sending FAX messages to the Prime Minister and Coal Minister demanding immediate withdrawal of the Ordinance and supporting the Coal Workers Strike.

The BSNL workers fully support the coal workers struggle and extend solidarity and support!

Left Parties Protest, Obama visit

Press Statement

Six Left parties, the CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML)-Liberation, AIFB, SUCI(C) and RSP have issued the following statement:

Obama Visit: Observe Protest Day on January 24

The Modi government and the BJP have unleashed the forces of Hindutva which threatens the secular and democratic values of the Indian Republic. It is at such a juncture that the Government has invited President Obama of the United States of America to be the Chief Guest of the Republic Day on January 26.

It is a supreme irony that the day which symbolizes India’s independence and sovereignty is being graced by the head of a country which has done the most to assault and destroy the sovereignty of many countries around the world. President Obama himself is responsible for the aggression in Libya and for the rerun of bombing and sending troops back to Iraq. The US is doing everything to destroy Syria as a national entity.

The Left parties protest the visit of President Obama because:

1.  The United States is targeting and destabilizing governments andcountries in West Asia by military interventions like in Iraq, Libya and Syria.

2. The United States is the patron and staunch supporter of Israel which occupies Palestinian land and Arab territories and subjects the Palestinian people to colonial oppression.

3.    The United States has shifted a substantial part of its naval and military resources to Asia as part of the pivot of Asia and is creating new military bases and tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.

4.      US intervention in Afghanistan and role inPakistan have nurtured fundamentalist forces, the disastrous consequences of which serve as a warning to India.

5.      US which wages wars in the name of defending democracy, is facing massive protests at home against racial murders by its police force. Further the terrible record of torture and Islamophobic profiling by the CIA with the approval of the US government has recently exposed the US as amongst the worst violator of human rights and democracy in the world.

The BJP government is pursuing a pro-US foreign policy which is contrary to an independent non-aligned foreign policy. This is being done in the interests of Indian and foreign monopoly capital.

The Left parties strongly protest:

The decision to renew the India-US Defence Framework Agreement for another ten years. This is a pact which will yoke India to American military strategy in Asia

Seeking to pressurise India to change its foreign policy orientation vis a vis Palestine, Israel and Iran to suit US interests

The relentless pressures exercised by the Obama administration on India to open up the financial sector to US capital, as a result of which the Modi government has promulgated an ordinance to allow 49 per cent FDI in the insurance sector. The strong pressure of the US to weaken the patents regime in India to benefit the US drug companies, so that they can sell drugs in India at high prices.

America’s pressures that India to give up its food security programme by undermining public procurement and the public distribution system.

US pressuring India to weaken laws that protect labour rights and environment, to benefit US corporations.

The Obama-Modi efforts to dilute the civil nuclear liability law to favour US nuclear.

The Left parties call for a Protest Day against the visit of President Obama on January 24.

Halt US aggression

Stop interference in India’s domestic matters

Stop US-India strategic collaboration

CITU Oppose Ordinance Raj, Anti-Worker Decisions

CITU Statement, Ordinance Raj

Following is the Press Statement issued by CITU
New Delhi, January 2: Centre of Indian Trade Unions strongly denounces the BJP led NDA government resorting to the ordinance route to bulldoze opposition and push its anti people and anti worker policies, the latest being the ordinance amending the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act. The amendment to the Land Acquisition Act exempting consent and social impact assessment for acquiring land is nothing but an unconcealed measure to favour the corporates and real estate barons surrendering the genuine interests of the peasantry and land owners.
A few days back the BJP government reissued the ordinance on coal privatisation. It resorted to the ordinance route to raise the FDI in insurance in the face of stiff opposition from the employees and all the trade unions and despite the fact that it was not able to get the bill passed in Parliament.
Since coming to power this BJP government has repeatedly demonstrated its zeal to push through the neoliberal policies totally unconcerned about the interests of the nation and the common people. This was once again displayed with its decision to hike the excise duty on oil preventing the petrol and diesel prices from coming down despite their steep fall in international markets.
CITU condemns this Ordinance Raj and demands a reversal of these anti national ordinances and policies.
CITU calls upon the entire working class movements of the country to intensify the united struggle against such anti national and anti people policies. It extends solidarity to the struggles of the insurance employees and coal workers and totally supports the six Unions call for strike from 6th January 2015.

‘No Privatisation of Railways, But Private Investment required – Railway Minister

privatisation, Railways

The Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu assures that there is no proposal to privatise Railways. He continues in the same breath that public investment in Railways is necessary.

The meaning is clear. All of a sudden, Railways will not be privatised. But starting with public investment, the process will start for privatisation.

The policy of the government is well known. It is privatisation. That is why the Railway Federations( AIRF)etc. are  preparing for serious struggle.

EPF interest for 2014-15 is 8.75%

2013-14, 8.75%, EPF interest rate

The Finance Ministry has ratified the decision of the EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees (CBT) to retain 8.75 per cent rate of interest for 2014-15 also. It was the same rate of interest for 2013-14.

This rate of interest on PF deposits would now need to be notified by the Labour Ministry as well as by the Income Tax Department. The decision would be implemented from the date of notification. The EPFO took the decision in its meeting held on 26th August 2014.

But this interest is less than demanded by the Central Trade Unions, which was 9.5%. The proposal of the government to reduce the present interest was strongly opposed by the unions and hence retaining last years interest rate.

Bank employees prepare for strike as IBA denies adequate Wage Revision

Bank Strike, IBA, UFBE

The Public Sector Bank Employees have decided for a series of strike in the new year due to the adamant attitude of the Indian Bank Association in not prepared justified increase in the wages. The IBA is only prepared only to a meagre increase of 11%, while the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBE), the apex body of all the unions in Banks, is demanding 23% increase.  The latest talks also having failed, the UFBE has decided for a series of strike. One of the reason mentioned by the IBA is that due to the NPA ( bad loans), there is dearth of funds. The unions are questioning why the bad loans have not been recovered. It is the responsibility of the Bank managements to recover the loans of thousands of crores of rupees to the corporates and big business. The increase in NPA is not due to the employees, but only due to the managements favouring the corporates and rich.

The UFBE stated that a one day strike will be organised  on 7th January 2015, four days strike from 21 January  and Indefinite Strike from 16th March 2015.

We fully support the justified strike of the Bank Employees.
