French workers, increase of working hours, strike

Nationwide strikes are being organised in France against the government’s move to increase the working hours from 35 hours upwards, and damaging the hard won worker protections. Flights, Railways, other transport services etc. are badly affected. The unions demanded that the bill moved in the Parliament in this connection should be withdrawn.

We express our solidarity and support to the strike and demand the French government to withdraw the bill which attacks the rights of the workers.

EPF interest rate

Press reports indicate that the EPFO is examining whether the interest rate for 2015-16 can be increased from the declared 8.8%. The Central trade Unions have been demanding that it should be increased to 9.5%. Now it is understood that EPFO is considering of increasing the same to 8.9%. Our demand is that since there is a surplus of more than Rs.1,100 crore is available, 9.5% should be granted.

Retrenchment, Siemens

Siemens, which is the German based engineering MNC, has stated that it will slash about 2,500 jobs, which means retrenchment of so much existing workers.

This is an indication of the worldwide reduction of work force. The MNCs in India have been retrenching the workers in a big way and struggles continue against the same.

Greece, Protest against pension reforms

Greece Protest against Pension reformsMassive Protest against pension reforms that are part of Greece’s third international bailout.

Athens, Feb 4 : Greece was hit today by a general strike against an unpopular pension overhaul that has rallied workers against the embattled government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

The 24-hour labour action has deprived the country of train and ferry services and will sideline dozens of flights.

Hospitals will operate on emergency footing, gas stations will remain closed and taxis have been pulled off the streets.

Lawyers and farmers are also participating in the walkout. The general strike, the third in as many months, is directed against government plans to lower the maximum pension to 2,300 euros (USD 2,500) a month from 2,700 euros currently and introduce a new minimum guaranteed basic pension of 384 euros.

The leftist administration of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras also wants to merge pension funds and increase social security contributions by both employers and staff.

The plan has been criticised by a wide array of professional classes, from lawyers and engineers to sailors and farmers.

The farmers have formed protest hubs at dozens of locations on Greece’s national highways, intermittently blocking traffic with tractors over the past two weeks.

On Tuesday the farmers blocked passage of freight trucks into Bulgaria and Turkey, causing long lines on the respective borders.

Greece must save 1.8 billion euros from state spending on pensions under a three-year bailout signed with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund in July.

The Tsipras government has warned that the nation’s  pension system will soon collapse without the reform, which is expected to be put before parliament for a vote later this month.

Protest Day on 19th January 2016

Ranchi, Dec 18: The Centre of Trade Unions of India (CITU), All India Kishan Sabha and All India Agriculture Workers Union have decided to observe a nationwide ‘protest day’ on January 19 on their charter of demands.
“The trio decided to observe the day as ‘Virodh Diwas’ where labour force and farmers will hit the streets in support of their demands like genuine rates for agriculture produce, wages and other social security issues”, CITU General Secretary and MP Tapan Sen said here.
“The protest will also cover farmer suicides due to agriculture crisis and the existing 12-point charter of demands”, he told a press conference.
The unions in the coal sector were also discussing on their action plan to firm up protests against reported 10 per cent disinvestment in the sector by the Centre, he said.
Accusing the Centre of “taking” the 13 major ports in the country on the path of corporatisation, Sen said all the federations in the ports had written to the Centre against any repeal in the existing Port Trust Act as it was integral with the security of the country.
The trade unions in ‘Anganwadi’ sector would stage demonstration sometime in February near the Parliament against cut in allocations in welfare projects.
The ongoing four-day General Council meeting of the CITU is also deliberating to include the unemployed as about 40 per cent of the participation marked on September 2 strike had been outside union affiliations. (Ganashakti)
