Telegraphs

It was a great invention – The Telegraphs, which sends message in codes to any part of the world. Within few years after the invention, telegraphs came in to India in 1851. The first telegraph system in India was introduced on 24rd October between Calcutta and Diamond Harbour. It was expanded all over India by 1854.

The telegraphs flourished in a big way. It was the fastest communication for many years, till the telephones came in the 20th century. Still telegraphs was very valuable as as a record, document etc. as also reaching to the villages through the Post Offices.

However, it could not survive in the 21st century, where the fastest and easy communications came through the mobile, internet etc. The Unions could delay the extinction for some time, but were unable to stop it.

The Telegraphs was given a farewell on  15th of July 2013 by the people of India. But it was a real magnificent farewell. Hundreds of people stood in queue to send their last telegram in front of the telegraph offices.

Telegrams have become a memory in India. But all of us cherish the long experience with telegraphs and telegrams!

It is reported in the press that the TRAI is set to issue notification to the telecom companies to pay Re.1/ compensation for each call drop with a maximum of Rs. 3/- for a day. Though the telecom companies have protested, the large number of complaints on the call drops and also the assurance of the Minister that call drops will be reduced, it is almost certain that the TRAI will issue the orders.

Radiation, Telecom Towers

“The department of telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will launch an awareness campaign by October end to sensitise resident welfare associations (RWAs) that exposure to telecom towers do not cause cancer or other diseases.

“The ministry along with the regulator has set up a joint committee of officials for the purpose which will facilitate setting up of towers in areas where residents have opposed it”. (Report In Hindustan Times)
There is no doubt that radiation will be there. The question is to what extend radiation is there and whether it will affect the people nearby. This has to be made very clear, since it is a question affecting the health of the people.

BSNL, Call drops, MTNL

Congress has attacked the Modi government and specifically Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad responsible for call drops and demanded his immediate resignation.

Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, on his part, stated that the UPA government is fully responsible for the poor condition of BSNL and MTNL.

The fact is that both NDA as well as UPA are responsible for the call drops and the present condition of both BSNL and MTNL.

As in the case of competing in supporting and providing all help to the corporates and the MNCs by both Congress and BJP, both of them should support BSNL and MTNL, instead of trying to finish them off.

Spectrum Sharing/Trading

According to press reports, the Spectrum Sharing Rules may be finalised and announced by the DoT this week itself. The private telecom companies have been continuously putting pressure on the government for the same. This will enable the telecom companies to share/trade  the spectrum between them according to the requirement of each.

mobile towers, Radiation

It is a case of the mighty influence of the private telecom companies. The government has now decided that mobile towers can be erected on the government buildings to ensure connectivity. There are many reports on the radiation of the mobile towers and in many places, agitations are going on. BSNL has put warning boards wherever it has  constructed mobile towers near its offices.

Connectivity is important and at the same time, the radiation issue is also to be tackled. What is the government plan is not known. It should be transparent.
