CPI(M) - FDI- Pension

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has  issued the following statement:

The  UPA government has decided to raise the cap for foreign direct investment in  the insurance sector from the current 26 per cent to 49 per cent. The Cabinet  has also decided to allow 49 per cent FDI in pension funds. These measures  announced by the Union Cabinet will make India’s finance sector more vulnerable  to speculative finance capital.

The  decision to allow FDI in pension funds will jeopardize the savings of millions  of employees in the country.

The  Polit Bureau appeals to the people to oppose these anti-people measures. The PB  also appeals to political parties to defeat these measures when they are brought  before parliament.

Protest Action - 20th Sept. - opp.parties

The leaders of the Samajwadi Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Telugu Desam Party, Biju Janata Dal, Janata Dal (S), All India Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party have issued the following statement:
Nationwide Protest Day on September 20
The UPA government has stuck cruel blows on the people one after another.
It has raised the price of diesel by Rs. 5 per litre stoking price rise and burdening the farmers. It has limited the subsidised gas cylinder per family to six and the rest will have to be bought at the market price which is more than double. It has opened the multi-brand retail trade to foreign supermarket chains endangering the livelihood of more than four crore people occupied in retail trade and the mass of consumers. It is selling off shares of profitable PSUs and navaratna companies like NALCO and Oil India.
We appeal to the people to rise in protest against these anti-people measures.
We appeal to the farmers, workers, women and youth to join the protest.
We appeal to the transporters, shopkeepers and traders organisations to join the struggle.
We appeal to all sections of the people, all patriotic-minded citizens to join the movement.
Let us all unite to stop these measures which will further burden the people and ruin their livelihood.
Let there be a powerful protest on September 20 through hartals, pickettings, demonstrations and court arrest programmes.

Stop the move for FDI in retail trade

22 Sunday Jul 2012

The UPA II government is in an aggressive mood to impose the anti-people reforms, especially after the criticisms from US President Obama in this respect. The Left and democratic parties have strongly criticised the move and has asked the Prime Minister to stop this anti-people moves.

Following is the text of the letter addressed to the Prime Minister on the reported moves to revive the decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail trade. The signatories to the letter are: Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav, President of the Samajwadi Party, Shri Prakash Karat, General Secretary of the CPI(M), Shri S Sudhakar Reddy, General Secretary of the CPI, Shri Danish Ali, General Secretary of the JD(S), Shri Debabrata Biswas, General Secretary of the AIFB and Shri Abani Roy, Secretary of the RSP. The letter was delivered at the PM’s office on July 21.

**************

Dear Dr. Manmohan Singhji,

Reports are appearing that the Government of India is going to revive the decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail trade. This decision was suspended earlier due to widespread opposition in the country.

The Indian retail sector is the second largest employer in the country after agriculture. It employs over four crore persons. Most of these are small unorganised or self-employed retailers. Entry of MNC supermarket and hypermarket chains would cause severe displacement of these small and unorganised shopkeepers and traders. The entry of the giant Wal-Mart supermarket chain would have a disastrous impact. According to one estimate, a Wal-Mart supermarket in India would displace over 1300 small retail stores and render around 3900 persons jobless.

In a situation when employment growth has slowed down according to the National Sample Survey data of 2009-10, the entry of foreign supermarkets would further aggravate the employment situation.

We urge the government not to open up the retail trade to FDI any further. Political parties across the spectrum are opposed to this move. Many state governments have also stated their opposition.

In the absence of a wide-ranging consensus, we request you not to proceed with this decision.

The Defence Minister A.K.Antony has told the Communications Minister that it will not be possible to vacate any additional spectrum from Defnce to DOT. He has mentioned two reasons, one that the spectrum is required for the Defence and second that the spectrum transfer and laying of cable network by BSNL as promised earlier have not taken place.
Any way, a serious issue is developing which may adversely affect the growth of telecom services.

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has stated that ‘it is time that Rahul Gandhi became PM’. Congress leaders have started pushing the name of Rahul for the top most of Prime Minister. Is it that Congress wants to get rid of Manmohan Singh who is under cloud of so many mega scams in his Government in which some are coming in his direction? Or is it to curry favour with Rahul Gandhi?
