Chidambaram, Finance Minister, Reforms

P.Chidambaram, Finance Minister is very determined to continue with massive reforms in the short period left for the next general elections. Yesterday he has announced five main points on reform and which area it is to be implemented. They are 1) increasing FDI in all sectors 2)liberalising norms for portfolio investment, 3) coal pricing,4) coal block allocation and 5) pricing of natural gas.

Thus one more set of remorms to help the corporates and MNCs. But what about the help to the common people?

Privatisation of Airports which are profitable.

Airport, privatisation

The government has made its policy clear through actions on privatisation. Where there is profit, privatise it. Where there is loss, either close or keep it with government. A strange policy indeed!

This time it is the Airports. The most profitable airports, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad are already privatised. How the private companies who run the air ports fleece the passengers through additional charge is well-known. The CAG has already exposed the role of the private players like GVK (Mumbai Airport) and GMR (Delhi Airport).

But the government is determined to privatise even other profitable airports, keeping only the loss making with the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Now the Central Government is proposing to privatise Kolkata and Chennai, the next big airports where there is profit. It is very interesting that the AAI has already spent more than Rs. 3,700 crore for modernising the above airports and the benefit will go to the private companies.

The government and its anti-people policies should be exposed and defeated.

Child Labour – a Black-Spot on the Nation.

black spot, Chold-Labour

India is probably having the largest number of child labour, if the media reports are to be believed. Lakhs, and may be crores, of children are compelled to work in factories, shops, hotels, as also as domestic servants just to make a living for them / for their families. You can see them in many establishments in any city.

These are the children of our great nation and citizens of tomorrow. It is their right to get a good education, healthy food and special care. But what is the condition of these children who are compelled to work in their young age when they are expected to play and study. They live in very unhealthy atmosphere, they hardly get sufficient food and are exploited in all ways. They are punished harshly even for minor mistakes. They live in almost hell.

There are laws in the country banning child labour including the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986. But these laws are never ensured and implemented except in very rare cases. The law-enforcing agencies close their eyes, because those who employs child labour are powerful and influential. The large-scale poverty is another reason for growth of the child labour.

June 12th is declared and observed as the International Day Against Child Labour. Observing the day once in a year is completely insufficient. The Government, the NGOs, Trade Unions, political parties – all should jointly fight this cruel system and put an end to it. The right of our children to have a bright and happy life should be ensured.

Greece, protests, TV/Radio shuts down

A report from Greece is reproduced below regarding strike of the people against closure of TV and Radio as part of austerity measures.

Athens, Jun 12 : Greece’s conservative-led government was facing a political crisis today after its decision to shut down state-run TV and radio as part of spending cuts triggered a wave of strikes and fierce opposition from within the coalition government.                 The country’s two largest labour unions called a 24-hour general strike for tomorrow with flights from Greece’s airports set to halt for two hours that day.                 TV and radio signals from the Hellenic Broadcasting Corp., or ERT, went dead early today, hours after the government closed the broadcaster down and fired its 2,500 workers, citing the need to cut “incredible waste.”                 Protesters gathered outside the company’s headquarters north of Athens for a second day, sheltering from torrential rainfall in the building’s giant lobby, as ERT’s journalists defied the order and continued a live Internet broadcast.                 Journalist unions also launched rolling 24-hour strikes, halting news programs on Greece’s privately owned broadcasters, while the government’s center-left coalition partners demanded that ERT’s closure be reversed.                 The government defended its decision, insisting a new more efficient and less costly public broadcaster would be launched before the end of the summer.                 “When you restructure something from the foundations, you have to close it, temporarily,” government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said.

India, Peace index

India has always been mentioned as the country of the most peaceful people. Outsiders attacked and conquered it several times. The peaceful and calm life of the lakhs of villages were the real base of the nation.

But it seems every thing has changed. According to the Global Peace Index, a study on the global levels peacefulness, India is ranking 141 among 162 nations in the world. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka are all above India, but Pakistan and Afghanistan are at 157 and 162, below India.

Maoist violence, communal carnage, sexual assaults, road rage, terrorist attacks, political murders etc. have been on the increase in India. Many countries have started advising their citizens about risks in touring India.

It is most important that this dangerous situation needs to be changed for the better. How to do it and what actions are required is the moot point.

Murder of CPI(M) leader, W.Bengal

District Secretary of CITU Bardhman and former MLA, Com. Dilip Sarkar was shot dead while he was on a morning walk in the Asansol-Raniganj industrial Belt yesterday, 9th June. He was the leader of the Steel Workers Union. All the indications are that Trinamool goondas are behind the murder. The murdered leader was actively canvassing for the ensuing Panchayat elections.

In the recent period, there has been an increase in the attacks against the CPI(M) leaders and workers by the Trinamool Congress, especially after the elections have been announced. This has to be resisted and defeated.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and Comrades!

The Polit Bureau of the  CPI(M) strongly condemns the killing of Comrade Dilip Sarkar, Secretariat member  of the CPI(M) District Committee of Bardhaman and the District Secretary of the  CITU.  Dilip Sarkar was shot dead  while on a morning walk in the Asansol-Raniganj industrial belt on June 9,  2013.  Dilip Sarkar was a former MLA  and leader of the Steel Workers Union.

US intelligence agencies tap all internets – India also?

India, spying, US Intelligence

It has come to light that the U.S. intelligence agencies have a direct tap into the servers of the U.S.’s largest Internet companies where agents can go through for any suspicious activity.

“The highly classified program, designed to look at international communications and run by the National Security Agency and the FBI, can peek at video, audio, photos, emails and other documents, including connection logs that let the government track people, according to the sources, who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity.”

“The program, code-named PRISM, was first publicly exposed Thursday evening by The Washington Post and The Guardian.”

“According to the Post, which reported that it had obtained an internal NSA presentation on the PRISM operation, the tool was so successful that it was the top contributor to President Barack Obama’s daily intelligence brief — with 1,477 articles last year.”

“The participating technology companies were a virtual “Who’s Who” of Silicon Valley, including Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube and Apple,  the Post said.”

As seen from the above reports, the US Intelligence Agencies are even peeping in to the secret lives of each and everybody whom they want. This is a gross criminal act and can not be condoned any way. Privacy of people can not be violated. The world opinion has to be mounted up against this violation of the fundamental rights of each and every citizen.

Another report has come in the press that Indian government also is employing similar method to spy the citizens. It is completely wrong and had to be opposed and stopped.

Some Interesting information about British Raj.

Rudyard Kipling - Brtish Raj

I was reading a book on Rudyard Kipling, the celebrated writer who lived in India during the British Raj and wrote a lot about India and well-known as the author of the “Jungle Book”.

Many interesting facts about the British India can be found  in the book. It is stated that in the early stages of the British Rule, the term ‘Indian’ was meant for the British living in India. The Indian people were called as ‘natives’. This terms gradually changed after the  First War of Independence, Sepoy Mutiny according to British. The ‘Indian’ was changed to  ‘Anglo-Indian’ and ‘native’ to ‘nigger’.

It is stated that small children were generally entrusted to ‘ayahs’ to look after, who were Indian women. The children were even breast-fed by the ayahs and were much  more attached to the ayahs than to their parents, who were mostly engaged with their jobs and social functions.

With regrd to the name of Bombay, it is stated that the old name was Mumbai. It was the Portugese, who reached there for business in the end of the 15th century , who gave the name ‘Bom Bhai’ (Good Bay) which became Bombay. And now the name is restored to ‘Mumbai’ itself.
