Caste System, ICHR

The newly appointed Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research(ICHR) Shri Y.S.Rao seems to be a supporter of the caste system in India. A report in the Times of India is reproduced below in this connection. Is the BJP government supporting this position of appreciating the hated caste system which has been the curse of india for centuries and even now have its repercussions ? The common people of the country wants this mad system of castes to be removed for all times to come.

“NEW DELHI: The newly-appointed chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) Yellapragada Sudershan Rao appears to be a votary of the caste system. In a blog written in 2007, Rao had said that the “positive aspects of Indian culture are so deep that the merits of ancient systems would be rejuvenated.”

In the blog-article titled, ‘Indian Caste System: A Reappraisal’, he wrote: “The (caste) system was working well in ancient times and we do not find any complaint from any quarters against it. It is often misinterpreted as an exploitative social system for retaining economic and social status of certain vested interests of the ruling class”

5.65 lakh crore bad loan of PSU Banks

It is stated that the NPA (Bad loan) of the PSU Banks have reached 5.65 lakh crore. These are mainly the not-refunded loans taken by the corporates and big business. The banks write off thousands of crores of NPA every year with out taking any punitive action against the defaulting corporates and private companies.
It is time that the government and the bank managements take strong action and criminal cases against these big sharks eating the hard earned funds of the common people.

Cuba, Russia

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia met Veteran Communist leader and former President of Cuba Fidel Castro on 11th June at Havana during his visit of Cuba. This is an important meeting and may restore the close relations between the countries, which existed before the collapse of the Soviet Union ie. USSR.

Cuba was supported and helped by the USSR both economically and against the attack of the US. After the collapse of USSR, the relations could not continue as such. However the present visit of Putin to Cuba and discussion with the leaders of the country may be fruitful for both.

It is reported that Russia has decided to waive 90% of Cuba’s 35.2 billion dollars debt and the balance 10% will be restructured.

It is a good start. The relations should strengthen.

The Central Government Employees and the Central Pensioners organisations had demanded that the Income tax Exemption for Pensioners should be raised to Rs. 5 lakhs. But the hope has been denied by the NDA government. It has proposed only a raise up to Rs. 3 lakhs. Cruelty to Pensioners also.

Protest against Rail Budget – CITU Press Release

CITU, Rail Budget

PRESS RELEASE
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions(CITU) expressed serious concern at the BJP Govt’s first Railway Budget, 2014-15 which declares its dependence on so called public private partnership, private investment including FDI for funding its infrastructural and capacity augmentation projects. It reflects nothing but continuity of the same pro-corporate policy of the much discredited Congress Regime, rather in more aggressive form.
Just weeks before the Railway Budget, steep hike in passenger fares and freight charges to the tune of 14.2% and 6.5 % respectively exposed the brazen undemocratic as well as anti-people modus operandi of the BJP Govt. Added to this is the budgetary announcement of linking the future prices of travel with fuel adjustment factor which will result in virtual deregulation of railway fares providing for automatic increase in railway fares with the increase in price of fuel. This is nothing but an arrangement for perpetual increase of burden on common people.
Further, the thrust on PPP, FDI and outsourcing in various segments of railway operation and services as outlined in the current Railway Budget, is going to make the situation worse. Despite abject failure of the same exercise on depending on PPP route for infrastructural expansion and services during the UPA regime as reflected in plan expenditure in 2013-14 falling short by a whopping “Rs 59,359 crore from the target due to non-materialisation of PPP targets”, the Modi Govt also preferred to stick to the same provenly failed route. This means, either the expansion work will suffer or the private investors’ lobby will extract more undue concessions from the Govt in the process of their response, finally increasing the burden on the common people. Precisely, that had been the past experience of all PPP projects in sea-ports, airports, roads etc during the UPA’s tenure which increased the burden on the consumers and the people in a big way.
Despite admitting in the budget the abject failure of the Railways to implement the declared and sanctioned projects even to an insignificant extent, resulting in huge accumulation of unfulfilled projects announced in successive budgets, the current Budget failed to present any concrete roadmap for their execution except giving sound bites on prioritization, time frame etc. Even the new announcements made in the current budget do not have appropriate budgetary back-up, rendering them to be deceptive in real sense.
The Budget sounded high on Govt’s commitment to safety, but kept absolute silence about filling up around 3 lakh vacancies in the Railways, majority of which are related to management and maintenance of safety standards in railway operation.
CITU records its condemnation to this anti-people and privatization oriented Railway Budget and calls upon the working people to voice their protest against such retrograde exercise of the Modi Govt.
Issued by
(TAPAN SEN)
General Secretary

Railway Budget – A Move to Privatisation

08 Tuesday Jul 2014

opposition, Railway Budget

The Railway Budget presented by the NDA Government is nothing but a roadmap for PPP and Privatisation. Further, though no fares have been increased in the budget after the big increase days before, the chance for further increase is there connected with the fuel price increase. There is no mention about the filling up of the more than 3 lakh vacancies, especially in the areas of operation and connected with the safety arrangement.
There is clear indication for increased FDI and FII, which is also part of the privatisation process.
The opposition parties have strongly opposed the anti-people Railway budget. The parliament will see stormy scenes against the same.

Budget Session

The Budget Session of the Parliament is starting today, 7th July 2014. It is certain that the issue of continuous price hike and other issues will be raised by the Opposition parties. Congress has stated that it will behave in the Parliament as the BJP has done when they were in opposition. Does it mean that there will be continued walk-outs and disturbance?
The Left Parties are expected to raise the proposed changes in the labour laws by Rajasthan Government which are against the workers and prompted by the employers.

Huge Disinvestment proposal in Budget ?

06 Sunday Jul 2014

Budget, Disinvestment, PSUs

It is reported by Times of India that NDA government will seek to raise up to a record $11.7 billion in asset sales in its maiden Budget this week.
The privatization target could reach 700 billion rupees, almost equal to all proceeds over the last four years, in the new Budget going to be presented in the Parliament this week.

If this is true, then many PSUs will be disinvested and some of them may have strategical partners also, which means, gradually the PSUs will be handed over to private companies as in the case of VSNL, Centaur Hotels, BALCO etc., which was done during the last NDA government.

The government can expect mighty struggles from the workers and their unions.

29.5% of people poor in India – Rengarajan Commission

29.5% poor, Rengarajan report

According to the Report of the PMEAC chaired by C.Rangarajan, 29.5 % of the population in India are poor. This means almost 1/3 of the population. This is calculated on the basis that persons spending below Rs. 47/- are treated as poor.
Even 6 decades after Independence, this is the sad situation. Rich becomes richer and poor becomes poorer. Whether it is UPA or NDA, the policy is tilted towards the rich and powerful. The poor sections are ignored. A revolutionary change is required.
