CITU Condemns Retrograde Move to Sell Out
Public Sector Companies With Huge Asset

New Delhi, June 15: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions condemns the retrograde move by the Govt of India to fast track selling out the Central Public Sector Enterprises with its huge asset base to private hands. With this dubious intent, the NITI Ayog has been made to submit a list of CPSEs to Prime Minister’s office recommending fast track sale of those companies on various pretext.

It is a matter of alarm that in order to facilitate sale-out of the CPSEs, the NITI Ayog has been made to recommend further capital investment from national exchequer in some of those CPSEs like Air India, FACT , Chennai Petroleum, Madras Fertilisers etc, not just to revamp their operational efficiency, but to make them saleable to private hands.

The history of such strategic sale of around nine CPSEs, like IPCL, BALCO etc during the previous NDA regime reveals that each of those CPSEs with their huge asset-base were sold at prices less than one fourth of their real asset value at then market prices, that too, virtually to a single bidder, as observed by CAG at that material time. The Narendra Modi Govt at present has become more desperate in selling out huge national assets in the chosen CPSEs to its private corporate constituency, both domestic and foreign, at a throw away price, much to the detriment of national interest. Two years’ BJP regime could not create nor facilitate any new establishments for productive employment generation in any significant scale except making loud noises through media-hype and creating statistical illusions on GDP growth; on the other hand the Govt is desperately moving ahead for mega-sale of huge national assets through sale of CPSEs.

The NITI Ayog while making such disastrous recommendations along with the list of CPSEs for sale, went to the extent of arguing that “non-priority sector CPSE, once revived, could always be considered for strategic disinvestment”. Could devility go further ? Can Airlines, petroleum companies, fertilizer producing units be construed as “non-priority sector” in our country by any stretch of imagination ? But a Govt in a hurry to establish its corporate loyalty and also so called “reforms-credential” can certainly go to such devilish extent, totally unconcerned of national interest.

Such retrograde move of frittering away national assets in country’s CPSEs must be combated and resisted by the working class movement of the country. The united platform of country’s trade union movement comprising almost all the trade unions and federations of the country has already decided to go in for countrywide general strike on 2nd September 2016 demanding, inter alia, the withdrawal of such disastrous move of sale-out of national assets and CPSEs, in order to defend the working people as well as to defend the national economy.

The CITU while calling upon the working people and trade unions in the country irrespective of affiliations to prepare for staging the countrywide General Strike on 2nd September 2016 in a massive way, also calls for organizing united protest in workplaces and industrial centres against such retrograde move of privatization by the BJP Govt.

Modi Government continues its attack on PSUs

Disinvestment, privatisation, PSUs

The Modi Government has decided to privatise many government corporations and to sell up to 51% to private in some other corporations. It seems that as per this decision, the BJP government will dispose almost all the central PSUs to the private in the name of garnering funds for the government.

Thousands of acres of land in various metro cities owned by these corporations are going to be handed over to the private companies from meagre amounts. Existing employees of these PSUs will lose jobs, once these are transferred to private.

The Central trade unions and the public sector unions have to confront this all round attack and defeat the government conspiracy. Otherwise, there will be no central PSUs by about one decade.

Protest the reduction in EPF interest

EPF, Interest, reduction by Govt.

Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya told to the Parliament on 25th April 2016 that the Government has decided 8.7% interest for EPF for 2015-16, while the Board of Trustees of EPFO has recommended 8.8% interest.

The decision of the government reducing the interest rate proposed by the EPFO is condemnable. The government has no moral authority to reduce the interest rate of the hard earned money of the wage earners. This is one more instance of the anti-working class of the NDA government. This should be rescinded. All the 11 Central TUs, together and separately has opposed the government decision and demanded its roll back.

Strong protest should erupt through out the country.

Re-Privatisation of Nationalised Banks on the Government Agenda – Oppose and defeat the sinister move

Budget, Re-privatisation of Banks

It is now very clear why there was continuous attack on the Public Sector Banks recently from the government and the ruling parties.. The PSU Banks were blamed for the increased NPA (Non-Performing Assets ie. Bad Loans), reduced capital etc. The attack was aggressive and to put the banks in a bad light.

The reason is now clear to all. The government want to privatise these PSU Banks, which was brought in to the Public Sector from the private sector due to bad performance. As the next stage, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitely has announced in the Budget that the government share in the PSU banks can be reduced less than 50%. That clearly means privatisation.

The Members of the Parliament in the Parliament and the politicians, workers and people outside   should fight and defeat the sinister move.

CENTRAL TRADE UNIONS DECIDE TO CONTINUE ACTION AGAINST CENTRAL AND STATE GOVTS. ANTI-LABOUR POLICIES

All India Protest Day on 10th March, 2016 on 12 point charter

New Delhi: All the Central Trade Unions met on 27th January 2016 and resolved to continue their protest action against the anti labour policies of the Central and some State Govts. Central Trade Unions decided to observe 10th March, 2016 as All India Protest Day against Govt. indifference to the 12 point charter of demands and its unwillingness to restart discussions for working out concrete steps for resolution of the issues.

The Central Trade Unions reviewed the drastically deteriorating conditions of work and life of the working people and govt. going ahead with labour law amendments, disinvestment of PSUs and allowing FDI in strategic sectors. The Govt., it appears, does not want to wait for legislating these anti worker labour law amendments, it is taking away rights of workers by way of executive orders and directing state govts to carry out such pro-management amendments. The trade unions condemned one such directive issued by the Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govt. of India on this 12th January granting exemption to so called start up enterprises from inspection and application of 9 major labor law legislations, thereby legitimizing the violations.

The Central Trade Unions took note of and extend solidarity to the  sectoral struggles of workers/employees in Banks, Defence, Coal, Port and Docks and Telecommunications sectors, the anganwadi workers on their respective demands and also the  Central Govt. employees including Railways resolve to launch action against retrograde recommendations of 7th Central Pay Commission. They also expressed their serious concern over extremely harsh punishment of “double life imprisonment” given by the Court to eight workers of Pricol Ltd., Coimbatore and appealed to all workers to extend help and solidarity.

The Central Trade Unions also decided to organize massive National Convention of Workers in Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi in the last week of March, 2016 to decide about the next course of united action programme.

Fight against anti labour policies will continue. The Central Trade Unions directed its constituents to prepare jointly for protest action on 10th March, 2016. They also appealed to independent employees/workers/unions and federations to participate in the protest action against the offensive of the Govt. against workers and common people.
