BSNL, market share, Service, SWAS

BSNL is on the revival path after a weak performance for 4-5 years. It has increased its wireless connections systematically during the last few months at an accelerated rate of 1.41% putting Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea behind in increase of numbers. BSNL market share has been increased to 8.16% from the earlier 8.06%. However, BSNL has to much improve its revival package to compete with the private companies:

As per the TRAI report for December 2015, the statistics are as below:

I. Land Line Sector

First position BSNL with 59.31% market share.

II. Wireless Sector

  1. Bharti Airtel : 24.07%
  2. Vodafone     : 19.15%
  3. Idea            :  17.01%
  4. Reliance      :    9.98%
  5. Aircel          :    8.47%
  6. BSNL          :    8.16%

III. Broadband

  1. Bharti Airtel  : 23.07%
  2. Vodafone      : 18.98%
  3. Idea             : 15.54%
  4. BSNL            : 14.54%

Both the BSNL Management, the Unions and the workers have to make maximum efforts to improve the financial position of BSNL as also the service to the customers. It is not as simple and easy as telling. The main obstruction is the anti-PSU policy of the government which refuses to assist BSNL and even deny the financial dues to be paid by Government. Now the BSNL Management and Unions have initiated the ‘Service With A Smile’ (SWAS) programme, which has improved the BSNL position. But still, BSNL is far behind, except in the Landline sector, where it is still in the leading position with about 60% market share. The strategy should be to maintain and improve its position in Landlines and improve in the other sectors.

Let us make the ‘SWAS’ campaign a great success through dedicated and efficient work and save BSNL and its workers.

Heads of Circle Conference of BSNL at Delhi on 10-11 February 2016

BSNL, Heads of Circle Conference

It is informed that the Heads of Circle Conference of BSNL will be held at Delhi on 10th and 11th of February 2016. The subjects to be discussed are not known, but the Revival of BSNL will be one, certainly.

I would suggest that the following also be discussed, which have got crucial connection with the growth of the PSU.

  1. A consensus among the top managers of the company, who are mostly ITS officers, should be arrived at that all the officers working in BSNL should belong to BSNL. This is necessary for the growth of the company. As shares are allotted to the top managers of private companies and corporate to ensure  that their future is connected with the company in  which they work, in the same way the future of the officers working in BSNL should be connected with its growth. This is not only a business proposition, but also is a point of ethics.
  2. Fresh blood is essential for the growth of any institution. Almost 1.5 lakh workers have retired after formation of BSNL with only recruitment of about 30,000, reducing the staff by about 1.2 lakh from the 3.5 lakhs. Additional  recruitment is to be done, both at lower and higher levels.
  3. About one lakh casual contract workers are engaged by BSNL through contractors. Though clear Acts and Rules exist with regard to their wages, social security measures like EPF, ESI etc. these are violated in most of the circles, with the full knowledge of the concerned field officers. Even the directions and orders of the government and CMD BSNL are not implemented continuing one of the worst exploitation of the toiling workers in the country. Supporting the contractors for this brutal exploitation or becoming part of this exploitation shows the low morality and ethics to which some of the field officers have fallen. Before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, before the Chief Labour Commissioner, before the EPF and ESI Commissioners – BSNL Management is exposed as utterly failing in their duties to uphold the law of the land, human touch and ethics. BSNL should come out from the label of this utter shame and brutal exploitation.
  4. Although it has been accepted that all the officers from the CMD to the RM should meet the customers at various levels and make  connection, it is rarely put in to action. Each one has got the responsibility in this prgramme. Effective mechanism should be available to ensure that this connectivity is activated.

These are a few points which will energitise strengthening of BSNL and its services. Let the top management  discuss these issues and take suitable decisions.

Revival of BSNL

A REPORT FROM BSNL TELESERVICES IS GIVEN BELOW FOR INFORMATION

“We all are seeing the BSNL rejuvenating plans which are becoming the success stories. Yes, BSNL did it. BSNL has declared a new achievement which is, it has got 2 million gross new subscribers for BSNL Mobile in the month of Jan 2016, a new millstone for the efforts they have put in. BSNL is going like a bullet train and very aggressively with its new plans and decisions to make itself one of the best in class service provider for its sector.

Being a Public Sector enterprise, any change is a great deal. BSNL the only PSU in the telecom segment is able to push new boost among its own employees and its stake holders. BSNL strategies and adoptions of market expectations are quite dynamic. On the prima face, we thought that BSNL is trying to stand after a great surge. After a couple months it started running with its new BSNL Mobile Plans and Broadband Plans catalyzing the change in BSNL plans which were quickly accepted by large consumer base making BSNL to drive like a bullet train.

The financial year 2015 16 have given a bight scope of agility among BSNL stake holders. BSNL agenda, to make the company customer centric rather than a monotonous PSU company. To make this realized by its subscribers BSNL had implemented many plans and approach routes and bridged the gap between the subscriber and BSNL.

In this new record, BSNL Employees, Unions, Associations supports with their hard work to achieve this new mile stone, and in this new record Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan records top most growth and Assam, UP East, UP West, HP, Madhyapradesh, Maharashtra and Tamilnadu followed the record of acquiring highest volume of new mobile customers.”

Yes, BSNL is on the way to recovery by the joint efforts of the Unions/Associations and the Management. Let us continue this magnificent effort to bring BSNL to its past glory!

SWAS

BSNL Unions/Associations  and Management together has called upon the BSNL employees to do all they can do to improve the services to the customers and strengthen BSNL. The Campaign “SWAS” (“Service With A Smile” ) is the life-saving nectar for BSNL. It has got to be effectively used.

Circle level Conventions have been held in many centres and the message of SWAS conveyed. It should go to the local level to each and every employee. All the employees while they go back after duty should ask themselves how much they have done for the customers that day and how much revenue they have been able to earn for BSNL.

And also plan that something more will be done next day for the customers and BSNL.

Review, SWAS

Two weeks have gone since ‘Service With  A Smile’ (SWAS) has been started jointly by the BSNL Management and the Forum of BSNL Unions/ Associations for giving a better service to the customers. Though it is a very short time, it is necessary to have a preliminary review of the same. Whether it is implemented in all SSAs/Circles, how it is implemented, what is the reaction of the employees as also the customers, what is the role taken by the local management etc. are to be reviewed.

This is necessary for further planning and continued implementation .

BSNL’s revenue report data shows that the overall revenue of the company (till Nov-2015) has increased by 2.29 percent compared to last year. However, BSNL has observed that the overall revenue has declined in many circles compared to the same period previous year. ( Telecom News).

This is not sufficient. More % of increase is necessary to make the company  profitable.
