BSNL should implement Minimum Wages for Casual Labour as per VII CPC Report and decisions.

23 Wednesday Aug 2017

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in BSNLCCWF - Casual and Contract workers

Casual Labour in DOT and later in BSNL has always been paid the lowest of the wages recommended by the Central Pay Commissions. Wages as per the VI CPC was also implemented in the same way. VII CPC recommendations of Rs.18,000 as the lowest wage has been accepted by the government and same implemented for CG employees. But even after one year, BSNL management has not issued orders granting this lowest wage to the casual labours. This is complete injustice. The wages recommended by VI CPC and implemented for CG employees w.e.f. 2006 is still continuing for casual workers even after 11 years.

BSNLCCWF and BSNLEU have many times demanded that this should be implemented. Non-implementation is resulting in loss of thousands of rupees to the poor paid workers.

The BSNL Management should implement the lowest wage of CG employees to the casual labours working in BSNL without any further delay.

Triple Talaq - SC judgment

The majority judgment of the Five Judges Constitutional Bench of Supreme Court stating that the Triple Talaq is unconstitutional is most welcome and timely. The Muslim women has been given justice in this respect. This is a progressive judgment.

Bank workers’ Strike on 22nd August 2017

Bank Workers strike

More than 10 lakh bank workers will be going on strike on 22nd August 2017 on the call of the United Form of Bank Unions (UFBU), against the decision to merge the banks, privatisation of banks etc. As usual, the strike will be full success with all the banks closed, as is usual with the bank strikes. UFBU includes all the unions/associations in the banks.

The government is making all out efforts to destroy the public banks and hand over them to private. De-nationalisation of banks is its slogan. Recently it was reported that the Prime Minister told that all the PSUs are born to die. It can said in another way that the government is going to privatise or close the whole PSUs, which strengthened the country economically and helped India to  pass over from the 2007-8 world economic crisis.

Full solidarity and support to the strike of the Bank Workers! The government should withdraw from the attacks on the Banks and their employees.!

WFTU statement on the murderous attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils
18 Aug 2017 EUROPE, SPAIN

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing more than 92 million workers in 126 countries all over the world, strongly denounces the murderous attacks that took place yesterday in Barcelona and in Cambrils, where many people were killed or injured. We are extending our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

Such murderous attacks take place in the framework of fierce competition of imperialist powers, in the framework of wars and interventions all over the world and aim at terrorizing the peoples and intensifying repressive measures against them, while at the same time they are cultivating fear and xenophobia.

As class oriented world trade union movement, we firmly stand by the side of the people of the Spanish State and call on them to intensify their struggles against the reasons that generate wars and conflicts as well as murderous plans and mechanisms to the detriment of the peoples.

WFTU in solidarity with the people of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

WFTU solidarity with the people of North Korea

WFTU in solidarity with the people of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
16 Aug 2017 ASIA, DPR KOREA

The World Federation of Trade Unions, on the behalf of its more than 92 million members in 126 countries in the five continents, extends its internationalist solidarity with the people of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

As international class-oriented trade union movement, we strongly condemn the tensions caused by the US government and President Trump as well as the recent decisions of the UN Security Council which impose new sanctions against DPR Korea and its people.

It is blatant hypocrisy on the behalf of the US government to threaten the sovereignty of DPR Korea under the pretext of its nuclear program, while at the same time they maintain their own nuclear arsenal, while the military exercises among the USA, South Korea and Japan are constantly increasing in the region and while more than 28.000 US soldiers are present in the South of the Korean peninsula.

The escalating tension by the USA and its allies and the sanctions do not serve the interests of the peoples of the area; on the contrary, it is the wish of the World gendarme (USA) to impose to the people and the countries its own choices.

Therefore the WFTU is joining its militant voice with the people of DPR Korea and with the World Working Class and demands: – The immediate lift of sanctions which have destructive consequences on the ordinary people’s lives. – The end of the concentration of US military forces in the region. – The peaceful and independent reunification of Korea.

I condemn the forgery and rubbish published in my name in Whatsup by some unscrupulous fellow

Forgery in my name.

It has been brought to my notice today by our comrades that a write up in my name is put by some unidentified unscrupulous person in WhatsApp, with full of non-sense and rubbish, as if it is forwarded from my blog. Either the person is mad or has done it to malign BSNLEU and me. He can be an agent of Tata Telecommunications also. The ideas and suggestions put in that are completely against facts and intended to support the government in privatising BSNL and also to divide the executives and non-executives. I condemn the forgery and request my readers to completely ignore it.
My post in the blog with the heading “What is happening in Tata Communications Ltd (former VSNL)” dated 11-05-2012 is reproduced below:

“What is happening in Tata Communications Ltd (former VSNL)?

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL) was one of the first PSUs privatised by handing over to Tata for a mere Rs. 1439 crores in 2002. Now the name of the company has also been changed to Tata Communications Limited (TCL). What is happening in the TCL is not much known. But it is a must for any worker to know what happens to the workers in a privatised PSU.

Before being corporatized in to a PSU, VSNL was Overseas Communications, a section of the Department of Telecom.  It was corporatized with the specific intention of handing over this lucrative service to the private companies. In 2002, it was sold to the Tatas and an agreement was made on 06-02-2002 called “Share Purchase and Share Holder Agreement” between the government and the Tatas. As per this agreement, the workers were assured that there will be no retrenchment of the existing employees. The SC/ST employees, the disabled and employees coming under weaker sections will continue to get all the benefits they were enjoying earlier and they also will not be retrenched.

But what happened afterwards is entirely different from the agreement and assurances. The existing employees were harassed and were inhumanly treated by the new management. Many had to leave the company to escape from harassment and victimisation. While there were about 2600 employees at the time of privatisation, there are only about 700 left in service now.

In between, about 7,000 new employees were recruited. Their wages etc. were revised but these benefits were denied to the earlier employees. There is severe discrimination in the treatment meted out to the existing workers compared to the newly recruited workers. Further, the Tata management is now compelling all the former VSNL employees to resign and leave the company. They are threatened with retrenchment if they don’t opt for resignation.

All these anti-worker decisions of the TCL are completely against the assurances and agreement made at the time of handing over the company to the present owners. The workers denied of justice by the management have approached the court to stop the retrenchment. The workers have also demanded that they be repatriated to the DOT.

The cases of the other PSUs like BALCO, Centaur Hotels etc. which have been privatised, are not different. Humiliation, harassment, retrenchment etc. are the treatment meted out to the former PSU workers, including women.

The central government is implementing the neo-liberal policy aggressively and these are part of the same. India Inc, MNCs, big business and the media have been completely singing praise of these anti-worker policies. But, in fact, this policy of disinvestment, privatisation etc, are nothing but loot of the assets of the nation by the unscrupulous and profit hungry MNCs and big business with the full support of the ruling classes.

Hence it is the responsibility and duty of the working class to strongly oppose these anti-people, anti-worker policies and their implementation through sustained and mighty joint struggles and defeat them.”

Government weakens Railways to justify privatisation

21 Monday Aug 2017

Posted by VAN NAMBOODIRI in General

The railway accident at Khatauli, U.P., two days back causing death of many people and injury to hundreds has brought the issues of security and functioning of the Railways in to  the open. Minister, Railway Board and the employees are all giving contradictory statement, starting a blame game, while the people are suffering.

The issues are serious and is concerning the lives of the people. It is very clear that the continuous governments have been ignoring the safety concerns and upgradation, repair work etc. The number of employees required as per standards are not maintained.  A look in to the shortage of staff show the utter neglect of the management in this respect:

The number of railway employees have been reduced almost half during the last 40 years or so while the number of new railway lines and trains have increased, including the goods trains. A report published in ‘Deshabhimani’ daily mentions about the report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways which has noted that out of the 1,04,445 Loco Pilots required to run the trains, only 83,098 are available with a vacancy of 21,347  unfilled. Many good trains are stranded due to shortage of Loco pilots. It is the same with the case of Station Masters, repair people etc.

The government is fully responsible for the continuing accidents. Immediately after an accident, a committee to inquire in the matter is appointed, but what is the report of the committee or what action is taken on the report is usually not known.

It seems that the government is completely ignoring  and weakening the Railways to find  justification of privatisation of this great institution for the benefit of the corporates.

A thorough inquiry in all these matters should be ordered and necessary action to save the lives of the travelers.
