Calcutta lost to Delhi 105 years back! Calcutta was the capital of the British Empire in India since it took over from the East India Company. Simla was its summer capital.
In December 1911, with the big Durbar of King V of England and Emperor of India at Delhi, the capital of India was declared to be at Delhi. But it took about 20 years more for the actual shifting, during which period, Viceroy’s Bunglow (present Rashtrapathi Bhawan) and other buildings, Connaught Place etc. were constructed and the New Delhi became the capital of India. The actual shift took place in 1931.

It is interesting to note that every time the capital is shifted to other cities, after some time it is returned to Delhi again. Capital was shifted to south during Tuglak’s time, but it came back. Akbar shifted capital to Agra, it came back again to Delhi. British also shifted their capital to Delhi.

Delhi had got its own charms. It has got its aggressiveness also. Despite severe heat and cold during summer and winter respectively, those who come to Delhi mostly settle here.

Delhi is Delhi! No other city can beat it, despite its many short comings!
