Savitribai Phule

A well attended meeting was held at BTR Bhawan, New Delhi at 04.00 PM today, 3rd January, to observe the birth anniversary of the great social revolutionary and activist Savitribai Phule, who lived in the 19th century. She and her husband Jyotiba Phule fought against the caste discrimination,  organised schools for the dalits and also helped inter caste marriages.  Her’s was an eventful life, fighting for the cause of the downtrodden, that too when the society was much more rigid and caste-basis.

The meeting was presided over by Com. V.Srinivasa Rao. The keynote address was delivered by Com. Archana Prasad, who evaluated the life and works of savitribai Phule. Com. Jagmati Sangwan (AIDWA) and other leaders addressed.

The programme was organised by Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch (DSMM)

Left Parties Protest, Obama visit

Press Statement

Six Left parties, the CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML)-Liberation, AIFB, SUCI(C) and RSP have issued the following statement:

Obama Visit: Observe Protest Day on January 24

The Modi government and the BJP have unleashed the forces of Hindutva which threatens the secular and democratic values of the Indian Republic. It is at such a juncture that the Government has invited President Obama of the United States of America to be the Chief Guest of the Republic Day on January 26.

It is a supreme irony that the day which symbolizes India’s independence and sovereignty is being graced by the head of a country which has done the most to assault and destroy the sovereignty of many countries around the world. President Obama himself is responsible for the aggression in Libya and for the rerun of bombing and sending troops back to Iraq. The US is doing everything to destroy Syria as a national entity.

The Left parties protest the visit of President Obama because:

1.  The United States is targeting and destabilizing governments andcountries in West Asia by military interventions like in Iraq, Libya and Syria.

2. The United States is the patron and staunch supporter of Israel which occupies Palestinian land and Arab territories and subjects the Palestinian people to colonial oppression.

3.    The United States has shifted a substantial part of its naval and military resources to Asia as part of the pivot of Asia and is creating new military bases and tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.

4.      US intervention in Afghanistan and role inPakistan have nurtured fundamentalist forces, the disastrous consequences of which serve as a warning to India.

5.      US which wages wars in the name of defending democracy, is facing massive protests at home against racial murders by its police force. Further the terrible record of torture and Islamophobic profiling by the CIA with the approval of the US government has recently exposed the US as amongst the worst violator of human rights and democracy in the world.

The BJP government is pursuing a pro-US foreign policy which is contrary to an independent non-aligned foreign policy. This is being done in the interests of Indian and foreign monopoly capital.

The Left parties strongly protest:

The decision to renew the India-US Defence Framework Agreement for another ten years. This is a pact which will yoke India to American military strategy in Asia

Seeking to pressurise India to change its foreign policy orientation vis a vis Palestine, Israel and Iran to suit US interests

The relentless pressures exercised by the Obama administration on India to open up the financial sector to US capital, as a result of which the Modi government has promulgated an ordinance to allow 49 per cent FDI in the insurance sector. The strong pressure of the US to weaken the patents regime in India to benefit the US drug companies, so that they can sell drugs in India at high prices.

America’s pressures that India to give up its food security programme by undermining public procurement and the public distribution system.

US pressuring India to weaken laws that protect labour rights and environment, to benefit US corporations.

The Obama-Modi efforts to dilute the civil nuclear liability law to favour US nuclear.

The Left parties call for a Protest Day against the visit of President Obama on January 24.

Halt US aggression

Stop interference in India’s domestic matters

Stop US-India strategic collaboration

CBI, Coal scam, Manmohan Singh

It is reported that former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh may be examined by the CBI in connection with the coal scam case. During the UPA government period itself, almost all political parties demanded the same, but the CBI did not act.

Now there is a change of the government and the UPA is not in power, Dr. Manmohan Singh is going to be examined by the CBI.

It is clear now, how the CBI is being influenced by the government in power.

CITU Oppose Ordinance Raj, Anti-Worker Decisions

CITU Statement, Ordinance Raj

Following is the Press Statement issued by CITU
New Delhi, January 2: Centre of Indian Trade Unions strongly denounces the BJP led NDA government resorting to the ordinance route to bulldoze opposition and push its anti people and anti worker policies, the latest being the ordinance amending the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act. The amendment to the Land Acquisition Act exempting consent and social impact assessment for acquiring land is nothing but an unconcealed measure to favour the corporates and real estate barons surrendering the genuine interests of the peasantry and land owners.
A few days back the BJP government reissued the ordinance on coal privatisation. It resorted to the ordinance route to raise the FDI in insurance in the face of stiff opposition from the employees and all the trade unions and despite the fact that it was not able to get the bill passed in Parliament.
Since coming to power this BJP government has repeatedly demonstrated its zeal to push through the neoliberal policies totally unconcerned about the interests of the nation and the common people. This was once again displayed with its decision to hike the excise duty on oil preventing the petrol and diesel prices from coming down despite their steep fall in international markets.
CITU condemns this Ordinance Raj and demands a reversal of these anti national ordinances and policies.
CITU calls upon the entire working class movements of the country to intensify the united struggle against such anti national and anti people policies. It extends solidarity to the struggles of the insurance employees and coal workers and totally supports the six Unions call for strike from 6th January 2015.

BSNL, Kerala Agitation

The Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations, Kerala Circle has deferred its agitational programme, which was to start from 1st January 2015, after successful settlement of most of the issues. The draft minutes of the discussion between the management and the Forum received shows that the Kerala Circle Unions have taken a very pro-active role in improving the services and is not sparing anything to go astray. The struggle was for better services to the people. It is noted that there has been more than 12% expansion and growth in the last year which has got to be appreciated.

We congratulate both the Forum and the Management for the successful settlement.

Obama visit, Protest

New Delhi, Jan 2: Leaders of six Left parties met today to chalk out agitational programmes during the upcoming visit of US President Barack Obama to protest the growing links between the Narendra Modi government and “imperialism”.

CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, RSP, Forward Bloc and SUCI (Communist) decided in principle to stage protest actions during Obama’s visit, details of which would be chalked out later.
The intent of the protests is to focus people’s attention on the strategic relations between India and the US, including defence cooperation, with Washington trying to step up arms sales to New Delhi.
A few months ago, the six parties had decided to create a broad Left platform, involve more like-minded parties and groups, and launch joint movements to fight against neo- liberal policies, communalism and imperialism.

Savithribai Phule

Sadhvi_Savitri_Phule

The country is celebrating the Birth anniversary of social reformer and activitst Savithri Bai Phule  on 3rd January 2014. She was the pioneer of the women’s education, who lived and worked in  19th century, in British India.

Savithribai Phule was born on 3rd January 1831 at Naigon in Maharashtra. At the early age of 9, she was married to Jyoti Rao Phule, who was only 13. Child marriage was the system at that time.  Girls were married at young age and many became widows, when their husbands, mostly elder people, died. Jyoti Phule and Savithribai, both were much saddened by the plight of the widows and started a sadan and cared for them. The Phules had no children, but they adopted the son of a widow and brough him up.

Dalits were not allowed to learn and were treated as untouchables. Savithribai started a school for the dalit children and started teaching there. She was abused, harassed by the upper castes, but she continued her teaching. Stones and mud were thrown at her when going to school, but she did not stop. She also started a school for girls at Bhindewade Pune, at a time, when girls were  not allowed to study. She started “Mahila Sewa Mandal” in 1852, an organisation to help the women.

Her entire life was dedicated to the service of the underprevileged and women. Her husband was always in support. When Jyotibai Phule died in 1890, she accompanied the body to the cremation place and lit the pyre, breaking the system that women can not participate in the last journey.  Savithribai died on 10th March 1897 at the age of 66.

Savithribai Phule is considered as the pioneer of women’s movement in the country. She was in the frontline of serving the dalits. The University of Pune was renamed as Savithribai Phule Pune University in her honour on 9th November 2014.

The Dali Shoshan Mukti Manch is organsing a meeting on 3rd January 2014 at 03.00 PM at BTR Bhawan, New Delhi in memory of the great social activist and reformer.

Subhas Chandra Bose

downloadThe demand of the Left Front Parties of W. Bengal that January 23, the birth day of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, be declared as “Desh Prem Diwas” is appropriate and should be appreciated. Subhas Chandra Bose was one of the top most leaders of the Indian freedom movement and was elected as President of the Indian National Congress twice.  The formation of the Indian National Army (INA) for liberating India and the heroic efforts are well documented.  He was born 23rd January 1897 and the death is still a mystery.

The Government of India has many files in connection with the last days of Subhas Chandra Bose. It was so far not made public since there were strong belief that Netaji is still alive. But now, that a long period has elapsed, it is necessary for the people to know what exactly happened after the airplane crash in 1945 in which Subhas Chandra Bose was also there.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has to be honoured by declaring his Birth Day as “Desh Prem Diwas” and the mystery files declassified so that all the people will know the truth. The Government of W.Bengal and Centre should take immediate action in the matter.

save BSNL - Save India Campaign

The massive campaign ” SAVE BSNL – SAVE INDIA”  has already started. The preparations for 3 days dharna from 6th to 8th January 2015 are being made. The dharna should be participated by all the workers within the 3 days so that the management and the government will understand how seriously the workers have taken up the issue.

The next programme is the March to Parliament on 25th February 2015. Thousands of workers from all the circles will participate. In order to get reservation for trains, tickets will have to be booked immediately.

The culminating programme will be the Indefinite Strike from 17th March 2015. The SAVE BSNL – SAVE INDIA Campaign should be such that the people should be fully made aware the present situation, where the government is trying to destabilise and privatise BSNL. The anti-worker decisions of the government have to be fully exposed. It is also equally important that all the BSNL employees should do their maximum for a better and cordial service to the subscribers, who are the real masters.

Suggestions from comrades and friends are sought for how to improve and better our campaign. This will be much appreciated.

Anniversary of Cuban Revolution

Revolutionary Greetings to the people of Socialist Cuba on the anniversary of the victory of the Cuban Revolution, which falls on 1st January!

Yes, it was 55 years back on 1st January 1959 that the Guerrilla group led by Fidel Castro declared the victory of the Cuban Revolution after  the dictator Batista was defeated and ran way. Cuba has not looked back after that. Despite all machinations of the US and other imperialist countries to kill Socialist Cuba, it still remains and is able to improve the condition of its people. Cuba survived the inhuman economic blockade also.

It is the victory of Socialist Cuba that the US had to come down and the diplomatic relations are going to restart after many decades. The Cuban Five have been released from US prisons. Let us hope that the confrontation will come down.

Revolutionary Greetings to the heroic people of Cuba on their anniversary of victory of Revolution!

On this day,
