I still remember the day when BSNL was formed / inaugurated officially. A function was arranged at the ground of Sanchar Bhawan near the entrance gate with a good number of employees, press reporters, photograhers, union functionaries etc. It was 1st October 2000.
Ram Vilas Paswan, then Communications Minister, officially announced the formation o BSNL. He stated that DOT/ BSNL is the seventh biggest telecom organisation in the world and the first in India and declared that all efforts will be made to make it No.1 in the world. He also stated that while other PSUs are given the status of Mini Ratna or Navaratna, but BSNL will be a Maharatna, above them all.
Everybody clapped their hands in appreciation, though comrades like us, who fought to the last against corporatisation knew that all these declarations were an eye wash and part of a cleverly preared strategy as part of the neo-liberalisation policy to kill the organisation and privatise.
The last 14 years of BSNL has shown that what we feared is happened. Despite the continuous struggles by the workers, the government has been able to make the BSNL weak, loss making, and also a comparatively a poor service provider. Instead of number one telecom provider in the country it has been reduced the 5th position with a meager less than 10 per cent share by 2015.
The immediate task of the BSNL workers and their unions is to start a serious campaign among the people about the present situation, the antiPSU policy of the govt. and how BSNL was reduced to its present position and what are the immediate actions to revive it to give a better service to the customers and restore it to its past glory.
The Forum of BSNL Unions/Associations have called the entire BSML workers to stand united as one man and make all out efforts for this crusade for the people of the Nation.
Make the SAVE BSNL Campaign a mighty weapon to reach each and every citizen and ensure his support for the cause. Organise the Parliament March on 25 February with thousands of workers participating.
The proposed strike from 17 March should be a united strike with 100 per cent participation.
When the house is on fire, all out efforts by one and all are required. Our house BSNL is on fire. And we have to act and act immediately.
