The CPI(M) had called upon to organise the Birth Centenary Year from 8th July 2013 to 8th July 2014 by organising meetings, seminars, publication of books, discussions, social activities like blood donation camps etc. All these programmes were organised in an effective way in many places.

Com. Jyoti Basu was a towering personality and one of the tallest trade union leader in the country. Born in AN affluent aristocratic family of Bengal and after completing his barrister course in England, he was expected by the family to have a successful career. But he selected serving the people after coming to India. His close contact with the Communists in Britain changed his entire life. He became a member of the Communist Party and devoted his life to the people.

He had to face severe challenges is his life. The brutal attack of the semi-fascist Congress rule of 1970s in W.Bengal was not easy to surmount. But under Jyoti Basu’s leadership, the party survived the period and in 1977, came to power with good majority. The land-reforms and other progressive acts of the Left Front Government of W.Bengal under his Chief Ministership have been hailed by all. He stood strongly for the trade union rights of the workers. Com. Jyoti Basu was the Vice-President of CITU since its inception in 1970 till his death. He was a Polit Bureau Member of the CPI(M) since its formation in 1964. His strong secular stand created confidence in the minority in the state.
